Reader’s notes

p. 230. Six columns: stub plus Total, AFL-CIO affiliates, Unaffiliated unions, Individuals, Employers. The stub column has no printed heading, so the stub cells of the three heading levels are empty. Doubtful/irregular cells: - "All cases^1" section, row "Pending July 1, 1960", Unaffiliated unions: the middle digit is smudged in the scan; it reads as 1,2?8. I transcribed 1,278, which is what the column and section sums support (531 + 747 = 1,278; row 2,556 + 1,278 + 2,277 + 896 = 7,007). - "Unfair labor practice cases", row "Pending July 1, 1960", Total: printed as "4 858" with a blank where the thousands comma belongs (the comma did not print); transcribed as 4,858. - "Representation cases", row "On docket fiscal 1961", Unaffiliated unions: printed as "4 300" with the thousands comma missing; transcribed as 4,300. - "Representation cases", second row label is printed "Received fiscal 961" — the leading 1 of the year is missing in the original; transcribed as printed. - In the "Union shop deauthorization cases" panel, the AFL-CIO affiliates, Unaffiliated unions and Employers columns are filled with dash rules, transcribed as empty cells. All row and section sums check out as printed, apart from the two missing commas noted above; no arithmetic discrepancies were found. Footnote 1 is a single long footnote whose definition list (CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CP, RC, RM, RD, UD) is set as hanging-indent lines; it is returned as one string. The scan renders several leading "C" letters as "O" (OB, OD, OP) and "RC" as "RO"; these are read as C/RC, the standard NLRB case designations. The line "...for purposes o" at the right margin of the RC entry is a clipped "of" and is transcribed as "of". The page caption ("APPENDIX A", "Statistical Tables for Fiscal Year 1961", "Table 1.—Total Cases Received, Closed, and Pending (Complainant or Petitioner Identified), Fiscal Year 1961") and the page number at the foot are omitted.
