Reader’s notes

p. 216. Decimal points: the scan drops the decimal point in many percent cells, which print as a gap (e.g. "100 0", "43 2", "9 6", "16 0", "17 3", "16 7", "66 7", "5 8"). Because every percent in this table carries one decimal place, I have restored the point in those cells; no digits were altered. Two percent cells show a bare "0" with no visible leading point: "Board orders enforced in full" (Supreme Court section) and "Remanded to Board" (Supreme Court section), both in the July 1, 1959-June 30, 1960 Percent column. Elsewhere in the same column a zero prints as ".0" with a clearly visible point, so these two are probably ".0" with the point lost to ink dropout; I transcribed the visible glyph only. Three cells in the July 5, 1935-June 30, 1960 Percent column are degraded and were read with help from the column sum: "64.9" (Board orders enforced in full, Supreme Court) has a broken second digit that could also be read as 1; "9.9" (Board orders enforced with modification, Supreme Court); and "16.9" (Board orders set aside, Supreme Court). With these readings the column sums to exactly 100.0 (64.9+9.9+16.9+1.7+5.8+.0+.8+.0), which supports them. Apparent defect in the printed source, transcribed as printed and not corrected: in the Supreme Court section the cumulative percents do not match number divided by the 124 total. 80/124 is 64.5 but 64.9 is printed; 12/124 is 9.7 but 9.9 is printed; 20/124 is 16.1 but 16.9 is printed; and the three rows that each show a count of 1 print ".0", ".8" and ".0" rather than a uniform .8. Also, in the July 1, 1959-June 30, 1960 Percent column two rows each holding 1 of 6 cases are rounded inconsistently, as 16.7 and 16.6. The stub column carries no heading, so cell 0 is empty in both heading levels. All number and percent columns were cross-checked against their section totals and agree: 125, 1,981, 6 and 124 are each the sum of the rows beneath them.
