Reader’s notes
p. 210. Table 14, fiscal year 1960; 15 columns (stub plus 14 data columns) under three heading levels. No footnotes are printed under the table. Decimal points: in this scan the decimal point in the percentage columns is almost always lost or reduced to a gap, so the page shows e.g. "31 2", "68 8", "50 1", "88 1". Only one cell (Total row, "Employees involved ... Resulting in decertification / Percent of total eligible") shows the period clearly, as "49. 9". Every one of these cells is a one-decimal percentage, so I have written them with the decimal point (31.2, 68.8, ...) in the same way that the spaced thousands commas ("17, 421") are written closed up as 17,421. If a strictly literal rendering of the lost points is wanted, the affected cells are all of columns 3, 5, 8, 10, 12 and 14 in all three body rows. All readings are internally consistent, which is a strong check on the digits: 74+163=237, 51+111=162, 23+52=75, and 162+75=237; 8,726+8,695=17,421, 6,197+7,251=13,448, 2,529+1,444=3,973, and 13,448+3,973=17,421; 11,931+3,409=15,340 and 6,249+2,274=8,523. Every printed percentage also matches its ratio to one decimal (e.g. 8,726/17,421=50.1, 8,523/15,340=55.6). No misprints detected. The headings "Resulting in certifi-cation" and "Resulting in de-certification" are hyphenated across lines in the original and have been rejoined. Many dotted i's are lost in the scan (the caption area reads "participated in", "involved in elections", "Valid votes cast"); these are scan artifacts, not printing, and the headings are transcribed normally. The stub labels "Total", "AFL-CIO" and "Unaffiliated" are followed by leader dots, which have been dropped.
