Reader’s notes
p. 208. The table has 15 printed columns (stub plus 14 data columns) under three heading levels. The stub heading "Affiliation of union hold-/ing union-shop contract" spans all three levels and is repeated; "Total", "Total eligible", the "Valid votes cast" "Total" and "Percent of total eligible" each span heading levels 2-3 and are repeated. In this scan the decimal points in the percentage columns are very faint and in most cells read as a thin gap (e.g. "62 5", "87 3", "33 0"); only a few, such as 32.5 and 1.3, show a clear period. These are one-decimal percentages throughout, so they have been transcribed with decimal points. The superscript 1 belongs to the last column heading ("Percent of total eligible"), not to any value. As an internal check, every column's two component rows sum to the Total row (9+7=16, 7+3=10, 2+4=6, 921+1,601=2,522, 299+21=320, 622+1,580=2,202, 366+866=1,232, 304+587=891) and each printed percentage matches its ratio, which supports the digit readings.
