Reader’s notes

p. 191. Ten columns: the stub (Case No.), Union and company, Date petition filed, Type of petition, a two-column "Temporary restraining order" spanner (Date issued / Date lifted), Date temporary injunction granted, Date injunction denied, Date injunction proceedings dismissed or dissolved, and Date Board decision and/or order. "Type of petition" column: the glyphs are lowercase letters in parentheses, not digits — "(l)" for Sec. 10(l) petitions and "(j)" in the single CA case (2-CA-5169), which is consistent with the statute. At this scan resolution "(l)" and "(1)" are nearly identical, so the reading rests on that case-type logic as much as on the shapes. Standalone raised references: in "Date temporary injunction granted" the cells for 6-CC-145, 22-CC-4, 19-CD-29, 9-CC-124/125, 33-CC-24 and 17-CC-60 hold a parenthesised superscript 1, and "Date injunction denied" for 17-CD-25 holds a parenthesised superscript 2. These are footnote references standing alone in the cell (not attached to any value), transcribed literally as "(1)" and "(2)". Asterisks: eight union names are printed with a leading "*" (the Teamsters entries). Treating it as a footnote marker, it has been moved to the end of the label as "^*" per the marker convention; it is printed before the name in the original. Footnotes are not visible — the crop ends at the bottom of the last transcribed row ("39-CC-44 ... Retail Clerks (Montgomery Ward & Co).") and any footnote block, including the texts for markers 1, 2 and *, falls below the crop. The table itself most likely continues on the following page. Periods after abbreviations are unreliable in this 1-bit scan: many periods in "Co.", "Inc.", "et al.", "Corp.", "Wkrs.", "Bros." and in month abbreviations have dropped out or render as a bare space (the page shows e.g. "Co , Inc )"). Periods in the union/company column have been written in standard abbreviated form where the gap indicates a dropped glyph; in the date columns the presence or absence of the period after the month is transcribed as perceived and should be treated as uncertain (e.g. "Feb 26, 1957" vs "Feb. 26, 1957", "Apr 22, 1959", "Mar 11, 1959", "Sept 3, 1957", "Oct 29, 1957", "Dec 12, 1957"). Other doubtful readings: 2-CC-410, "Date injunction proceedings dismissed or dissolved" — the final digit of "Apr 22, 1959" is blotted and could be read as 1953/1950, but 1959 is the only value consistent with the fiscal year and the neighbouring rows. 2-CC-430/431, union label — "Employees U Local 584": the abbreviation mark after "U" is illegible and has been written as "U.". 19-CD-29 — "Montag-Halvorson-Austin & Associates" is read with hyphens throughout; the mark before "Austin" could be a comma. Line-end hyphens were repaired (Ameri-can, Trans-portation, Hal-vorson, Car-riers, Em-ployees, Ma-chine). "Drive-Away" in 35-CC-45 keeps its hyphen — it is part of the company name (Morgan Drive-Away, Inc.), not a break. "Do."/"Do" in the last column are ditto marks as printed, including the inconsistent terminal periods. Leader dots following case numbers and dash rules standing for empty cells were dropped to "".

p. 192. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 10 columns, confirmed from the vertical rules and from rows that carry a dash rule in every otherwise-empty column (e.g. 7-CC-72: two dash columns, a date, one dash column, then two dated columns). A line "See footnotes at end of table." is printed below the body; it carries no marker and the table's actual footnotes are not on this image, so footnotes is empty. Column 4 holds a full-size parenthesised letter, not a digit: it is the subsection of Sec. 10 under which the injunction was sought. It reads "(l)" (lowercase L, i.e. 10(l)) in every row except 2-CB-2216, which reads "(j)" (a clear descender) — consistent with that being the only CB case while all others are CC/CD. In a 300-ppi 1-bit scan "(l)" is easily mistaken for "(1)". Column 7's "(1)" entries are a distinctly smaller raised numeral in parentheses — a reference to footnote 1 — and are transcribed as "(1)". They are typographically different from column 4's "(l)". Three respondent names are printed with a leading asterisk (12-CC-27-29 Teamsters Local 79; 2-CD-167 Sailors Union; 22-CC-14 Teamsters Local 478). Treated as a footnote marker and moved to the end of the label as "^*". Column 3 of rows 1-CD-57 and 22-CC-14, CD-18 is a ditto entry printed as leader dots around "do"; transcribed as "do". Doubtful readings: - Stub of row 10 renders as "1-OD-57"; read as "1-CD-57" since the case-type codes in this table are CA/CB/CC/CD and the row is a jurisdictional-dispute case. - "Moreelee Knitting Mills, Inc." (row 22-CC-12, name column) — spelling of "Moreelee" is uncertain. - "Ramas Aneras" (row 24-CC-52, name column) — the fourth letter of "Aneras" is unclear; the union's name is commonly written "Ramas Anexas", so this may be an r/x misread. - Periods restored where the scan has dropped them but the table's style and the inter-word gap show them: "Inc.)." in rows 22-CC-11 and 2-CD-167 (name column), "Oct. 7, 1958" in row 22-CC-12 (column 7) and "Dec. 29, 1958" in row 35-CC-47-51 (column 9). Each of these four appears in the image as "Inc )", "Oct 7" and "Dec 29". - Row 19-CC-109 is the only row whose single date sits in column 8 rather than column 7; columns 7 and 9 are dash rules there. Position checked against the column-7 and column-9 x-positions of the other rows. - Row 2-CC-460: column 9 (Apr. 7, 1959) is later than column 10 (Feb. 24, 1959); transcribed as printed.

p. 193. Continuation page ("—Continued"): no footnote block is printed below the table on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty; the in-body footnote references point to notes printed on the table's first page. The "Type of petition" column holds a parenthesized single character in every row, read here as "(l)" (lowercase L, i.e. a Sec. 10(l) petition, consistent with these all being CC/CD cases); at this scan resolution it could also be read as "(1)". In the "Date temporary injunction granted" column the cells transcribed as "(1)" are printed as a small raised 1 inside parentheses — a footnote reference standing in place of a date, not a date; the raised digit could conceivably be another numeral. An asterisk is printed immediately BEFORE the union name in the rows 15-CD-9, 4-CC-103, 2-CC-465, 22-CC-23-25, 22-CC-21, 18-CC-51 and 13-CC-183; following the marker convention it has been moved to the end of that cell as "^*". Periods in abbreviations ("Corp.", "Inc.", "Co.", "Dist.", "No.", "et al.", and month abbreviations) and some commas drop out of this 1-bit scan in places; they are transcribed according to the printed convention, so individual periods are uncertain — in particular "U.S. Plywood" may be set "U. S. Plywood", and the period in "Joseph R. Cianchette" is not visible. Trailing sentence periods after the closing parenthesis were legible in rows 15-CD-9, 20-CC-149, 9-CC-158, 13-CC-182, 24-CC-54-58 and 15-CC-78,79 and are kept there only. The first row's case number is read as 13-CC-174-179 (the leading digits are blurred, but the Board-order cell cites 13-CC-174-178 and 13-CC-179); "Sheet Metal Workers, Local 303" could alternatively be "Local 308". The "do" cells in the "Date petition for injunction filed" column are printed ditto marks set between leader dots, which have been dropped. Dash rules ("-------") used to fill empty cells are transcribed as empty strings; the rows 13-CC-182, 24-CC-54-58, 24-CC-57, 2-CD-168 and 13-CC-183 genuinely have no entry in "Date Board decision and/or order".

p. 194. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 10 columns, read off the vertical rules: (0) case number stub, (1) name of case, (2) date filed, (3) a column containing only the reference "(1)" in every row, (4)-(5) two columns used only by 10-CC-387, 388 (Sept. 12, 1958 / Sept. 25, 1958) and by 9-CC-161 (Oct. 9, 1958 in col. 4), (6) a column holding either "(1)" or a date, (7) a column used only by 14-CD-81, CB-669 (Oct. 17, 1958), (8) a date column, (9) the final disposition column. Cells printed as a dash rule ("------") are rendered "". The "(1)" entries are printed as a raised 1 inside parentheses, i.e. a reference to footnote 1; since the parenthesis is the entire cell content it is transcribed literally as "(1)" rather than as a caret marker. Several case names are printed with a leading asterisk (e.g. "*Longshoremen's Association ..."). Treating it as a reference mark, it has been moved to the end of the label as "^*"; in the image it stands before the first word. Rows carrying it: 1-CC-219, 37-CC-9/10, 12-CC-31, 2-CC-478, 2-CC-479-481, 9-CC-161, 16-CC-87, 18-CC-61, 21-CC-299. Ditto entries printed as "-----do------" in the date-filed column are given as "do" (lowercase, as printed); the disposition column's "Do." / "Do" are capitalised as printed, including 32-CC-24 where no final period is visible. Scan quality: many terminal periods after abbreviations (Co, Inc, No, Ltd, Intl, initials) are faint or dropped by the scan. They have been written as periods, matching the printed convention. Specific doubtful cells: 37-CC-9, 10 name column, "Virg Davidson Chudacoff" — "Virg" may be "Virg." or a longer given name; 14-CC-121, CD-80 name column shows a stray mark reading "Operating,." after "Engineers," transcribed as a single comma; 17-CC-82, 83 name column, "Locals 6, 6A" — the separator could be a period rather than a comma; 2-CC-479-481 name column, "Vins Trucking Co." may be "Vino"/"Vins". Stub entries 5-CC-99-102, 10-CC-387/388, 14-CD-81/CB-669 and 17-CC-82/83 end with a single dot that is read as a leader remnant and dropped. Rows 19-CC-112 and 17-CC-82, 83 have an empty final disposition column (only dash rules / blank). A partially cut-off line of small type runs along the very bottom edge of the crop below the last rule (likely a "See footnotes at end of table." line plus the start of the table's footnotes); it is too clipped to read, so footnotes is empty.

p. 195. Ten columns, two heading levels; "Temporary restraining order" spans the "Date issued"/"Date lifted" pair, and the other eight headings are tall single headings repeated in both levels. This is a "—Continued" page of Table 20, so no footnote block is printed on the crop; footnotes is empty. "Type of petition" column: the entries are the full-size letters "(l)" and "(j)", i.e. petitions under Secs. 10(l) and 10(j) of the Act, not the digit "(1)". Only row 22-CB-136 is "(j)"; all others are "(l)". The glyph for lowercase l and the digit 1 is nearly identical in this face, but the presence of "(j)" in the same column settles the reading. "Date temporary injunction granted" column: rows 2-CC-482/483, 1-CC-224, 12-CC-32/33, 13-CD-58 etc., and 18-CC-64 carry a small raised "1" inside parentheses — a standalone footnote reference occupying the whole cell (no value is attached to it), so it is transcribed as the cell text "(1)". The referenced footnote is not printed on this crop. Asterisks: several union names carry a leading "*" ("*Teamsters, Local 770…", "*Intl. Longshoremen…" twice, "*Public Utility Gas…", "*Teamsters, Local 294") and in row 12-CC-32/33 the asterisk sits mid-label ("and *Teamsters Local 512"). Because the mark's position identifies which union it applies to, the asterisks were left exactly where printed rather than moved to the end of the cell behind a caret; the explanatory footnote for them is not on this crop. Ditto entries: the "Date petition for injunction filed" cells for 9-CC-163, 36-CC-59, 14-CC-125 and 18-CC-64 are printed as "do." between leader dots; the leaders were dropped and "do." kept. The "Date Board decision and/or order" cell for 9-CC-163 is the ditto "Do." (for "Withdrawn." above). Cells printed as a dashed rule ("------") were transcribed as "". Faint/ambiguous punctuation: the periods after abbreviations before a closing parenthesis are broken or missing in the scan in several rows — "Consolidated Edison Co )", "Middletown Milk & Cream Co )", "Perfection Mattress & Spring Co )", "Traffic Safety, Inc )" — and were transcribed without the period, as they appear. Row 2-CC-487 ("…Cream Co)") and row 36-CC-59 ("…General Ore, Inc.)") show no terminal period after the parenthesis; row 36-CC-59's Board-decision cell reads "Dismissed" with no period, unlike "Dismissed." elsewhere. Case numbers wrapping over two to four lines were joined (e.g. "9-CC-163, 164, CB-590"; "13-CD-58, CC-189, 191, CB-713."); the hyphen in "CB-" at a line end is part of the case number, not a word break. Crop edge: the bottom rule of the table is not visible — the last row (2-CC-491) is cut just below its second line of label text, so any further content in its right-hand columns, and any rows or footnotes following, are outside the crop.

p. 196. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 10 columns, counted from the vertical rules: (0) case number, (1) name of case, (2) a date, (3) a narrow column holding "(l)" or "(j)", (4) a date, (5) a raised footnote reference, (6) a date or raised "(1)", (7) a date, (8) a date, (9) remarks/disposition. The crop is cut at the bottom edge of the last row; any footnotes and the table's remainder lie outside this image. Column 3: the parenthesised character is a letter, not a digit — it is the subsection of Sec. 10 under which the injunction was sought. It reads "(j)" only in rows 21-CB-1197 and 39-CA-853 (both CA/CB cases) and "(l)" in all the CC rows, which is consistent with 10(l) being mandatory for secondary-boycott charges. If the reference transcription treated these as the digit 1, this column is where the difference will show. Columns 5 and 6: the entries transcribed "(3)" and "(1)" are small raised figures in parentheses standing alone in the cell, i.e. footnote references used in place of a date, not data. The defining footnotes are not on this crop. The "(3)" in rows 2-CC-495 and 22-C-36 is a 3 as best I can read it; a 2 cannot be entirely ruled out at this resolution. Asterisks: an asterisk is printed immediately before a union's name in several rows and has been left exactly where printed rather than moved behind a caret, because in row 39-CA-853 it sits inside the parentheses ("(*Teamsters, Local 968 and 657)") rather than at the head of the label — it marks the labor organization, not the whole cell, so a trailing caret marker would have misplaced it. Doubtful cells: - Row 13, stub: reads "22-C-36, 38, 39, 41" with a single C where every neighbouring row uses "CC". Transcribed as it appears; it may be a misprint for 22-CC-36 or my misreading of a worn character. - Row 21-CC-294, last column: printed as "Apr. 29,-1959", with a short stray dash between the comma and the year. Transcribed as "Apr. 29, 1959" on the assumption the mark is broken type or scan debris. - Row 30-CC-44, last column: "Withdrawn" is printed without the final period that rows 22-CC-26-29 and 2-CC-476 carry; left as printed. - Ditto marks in the date column (col. 2) are transcribed "do", and "Do" in row 21-CC-294 where it is capitalised; leader dots dropped. Whether these carry a final period is not resolvable against the leader dots. - Abbreviation periods after Inc, Co, Corp and "et al" are faint or not resolvable in several name cells (e.g. "Inc ," in row 22-CC-26-29, "Co )" in rows 21-CB-1197, 2-CC-498, 22-C-36). They have been written in standard form; a strictly literal reading would omit some of them. Dash rules ("------------") that fill a cell are transcribed as empty strings throughout.

p. 197. Crop is a continuation page of Table 20 ("—Continued"); the column headings are reprinted here, so they are given. No footnote block is printed below the table on this page (the last body row, 24-CC-60, 61., runs to the bottom edge of the crop), hence `footnotes` is empty even though footnote references appear in the body. Parenthesized "(1)" cells: in the "Type of petition" column the character is set at full size and is ambiguous between the digit 1 and the lower-case letter l — in context it is almost certainly "(l)", i.e. a petition under sec. 10(l) of the Act; I transcribed the glyph as printed, "(1)". In the "Date temporary injunction granted" column the same-looking entries are set as a small raised digit inside parentheses, i.e. a footnote reference "(¹)"; because the cell contains nothing else, I wrote it as "(1)" rather than as a caret marker. These two columns therefore look identical in the grid but differ typographically on the page. "do" cells in the "Date petition for injunction filed" column are ditto marks (printed as "do." flanked by leader dots); the leader dots were dropped. Row 1's date is a ditto carried over from the preceding page, so its actual date is not recoverable from this crop. All cells in the "Temporary restraining order / Date issued", "Date lifted", "Date injunction denied", and "Date injunction proceedings dismissed or dissolved" columns hold only dash rules on this page and are transcribed as "". Scan quality: this is a 1-bit scan and periods after abbreviations are frequently faint or dropped. I restored the conventional period in month abbreviations and in "Inc.", "Corp.", "Co." where the surrounding typography makes it clear (e.g. "Apr 17, 1959" in the 35-CC-59 row, "Inc )" in the 33-CC-60 row, "Corp )" in the 7-CC-94 row). Two spots are printed with the period genuinely outside or absent and were left as seen: "Association Inc)." (16-CC-91) and "Intl Brotherhood" (10-CC-402); "Simmoner Inc," (24-CC-60) likewise. The leading asterisks on several union names (e.g. "*New Jersey Guards Union") are printed at baseline as part of the entry, not raised, so they were kept in the label rather than converted to caret markers; the key explaining them is not on this crop. Doubtful readings: 24-CC-60, 61. — "Simmoner" in "Comite de Empleados de Simmoner Inc" may be a misprint for "Simmons" (the company in the same entry is "Simmons, Inc."); transcribed as printed. 15-CC-75 — "Joe Billy Carbello" surname is slightly blurred. 13-CC-192 — "Searl Electric Service" could read "Searle".

p. 198. Continuation page: no column headings are printed on this crop, so header_rows is empty. The column count (10) was fixed from the vertical rules and confirmed by the five separate dash-rule segments in the all-blank rows (e.g. the last row, 17-CD-32): stub (case no.), name of case, date, section letter, then five value columns, then the remarks column at the far right. Columns 5 and 8 (the 2nd and 5th of the five value columns) contain only dash rules on every row of this crop, i.e. no data at all; they are kept because the rules show they exist. Column 3 holds a parenthesized lowercase letter identifying the statutory section — "(l)" for 10(l) on the CC/CD cases and "(j)" for 10(j) on the two CB cases (9-CB-681, 762 and 10-CB-1073, 1078). This is a letter el, not a digit one, despite the scan. Column 6 holds a raised, parenthesized footnote reference on several rows (21-CC-319; 22-CC-48; 1-CC-229; 7-CC-98; 20-CC-169; 12-CC-39-42; 14-CC-132). Because the marker is the entire cell rather than attached to a value, it is transcribed as printed, "(1)"; it is a reference to footnote 1 of the table, not a quantity. Several names carry a leading asterisk (*Teamsters…, *United Mine Workers…). The asterisks are full-size and printed before the name rather than raised after it, so they are left in place at the head of the label; they are almost certainly footnote markers explained at the end of the table. Doubtful cells: the first stub, read as "12-CC-37, 38." — the digit after "12-CC-3" is broken in the scan and could be 5 or 7. In the 19-CD-43 row the firm reads "Merril & Ring Western Lumber Co."; the scan may be dropping a second l in "Merrill". In the 12-CC-39-42 row, "Milioti-" ends a printed line; the hyphen is kept because "Milioti-Mancini Building Corp." is plausibly a hyphenated firm name rather than a word break. In the 1-CC-229 row the date prints as "May 4. 1959" (period where a comma belongs); transcribed as "May 4, 1959". Punctuation: this is a worn 1-bit scan in which many abbreviation periods and commas are faint or lost (e.g. "Co ,", "Inc )", "Dist 19", "Richard E"). Periods and commas required by the typesetting have been restored in the name cells and in the first date cell ("Apr. 21, 1959"), so a few of them are inference rather than visible ink. Hyphenated line breaks repaired: Council, Association, Anemostat, Contractors, Produce. "Super-Markets" keeps its hyphen (mid-line). The ditto cells printed as "----do----" in the name, date and 5th-column positions are given as "do"; leader dots are dropped throughout. "Do." in the remarks column refers to the nearest filled remark above, skipping intervening blanks (row 12-CC-39-42 repeats "Settled."; row 17-CD-32 repeats "Dismissed."). Scan artifacts, not content: a stray mark resembling a small "3" sits in column 5 of the 9-CC-169 row, and faint smudges/bleed-through appear in the right-hand columns of the 3-CC-92 through 12-CC-39-42 rows. A partially cut line "See footnotes at end of table." runs below the last rule at the bottom edge of the crop; it carries no marker and is not included in footnotes. No numbered footnotes are printed on this crop.

p. 199. Continuation page of Table 20; the column headings are reprinted on this crop, so they are given. 10 columns: stub (Case No), Union and company, Date petition filed, Type of petition, Temporary restraining order (Date issued / Date lifted), Date temporary injunction granted, Date injunction denied, Date injunction proceedings dismissed or dissolved, Date Board decision and/or order. Two columns of ambiguous parenthesised glyphs, distinguished here by size and context: - "Type of petition" column: every row carries a full-size parenthesised character that I read as a lowercase letter "l" (i.e. a Sec. 10(l) petition, consistent with all the listed cases being CC/CD cases). At this scan resolution the glyph is nearly identical to a digit "1"; it is transcribed as "(l)" in all 17 rows but could be "(1)". - "Date temporary injunction granted" column: the entries shown as "(1)" are a small raised numeral 1 inside full-size parentheses, i.e. a standalone reference to footnote 1, not a date and not the same glyph as the Type column. It is the entire content of the cell, so it is transcribed as printed rather than appended with a caret. Rows affected: 17-CC-88-90, 14-CD-88, 2-CC-510, 12-CC-46, 22-CC-60, 2-CC-512, 22-CC-62-66, 2-CC-511, 36-CC-64/CD-20. The asterisk that flags a non-AFL-CIO union is printed immediately BEFORE the union name in the "Union and company" column; following the marker convention it has been moved to the end of the label as "^*". Affected rows: 2-CC-510, 35-CC-61, 12-CC-46, 22-CC-61, 2-CC-512, 2-CC-511, 11-CC-16, 36-CC-64/CD-20, 10-CC-426. "do" in the "Date petition for injunction filed" column and "Do" in the last column are the printed ditto entries (surrounded by leader dots, which have been dropped); case and wording are kept as printed. Punctuation inside company names (periods after "Co", "Inc", "No") is faint in this 1-bit scan; standard abbreviation periods have been supplied where the typography indicates them. Trailing periods on row labels and on values such as "Withdrawn." / "Settled." / "June 24, 1959." are reproduced as read, and their presence or absence varies row to row in the original. Footnote markers 2 and 3 are printed under the table but no 2 or 3 reference appears in the body on this crop; they must attach to rows on the preceding page of this continued table. In row 22-CC-62-66 a short stray dash fragment appears just to the right of the "(1)" in the "Date temporary injunction granted" column; it is read as a scan artifact or a stray rule and is not transcribed. Faint stray marks also appear in the right-hand columns of several rows (e.g. a tick near 22-CC-61 and 13-CD-64) and are likewise treated as artifacts, not content. All "Date injunction denied" and "Date injunction proceedings dismissed or dissolved" cells are dash rules on this page, hence empty, as are both "Temporary restraining order" sub-columns except for the 6-CD-103, 104 row.
