Reader’s notes
p. 185. Table has 15 columns: stub plus three spanner groups (Elections participated in = 5 columns; Employees involved in elections = 5 columns; Valid votes cast = 4 columns). "Total", "Total eligible", and the "Percent of total eligible" column under "Valid votes cast" are tall headings spanning header levels 2-3, so they are repeated in both levels; "Union affiliation" spans all three levels. Decimal points: in every percent column the scan renders the decimal point as a blank gap (printed as "34 3", "65 7", "90 0", etc.). These are one-decimal percentages, so they are transcribed with periods ("34.3", "65.7", "90.0"), the same way the spaced digit-grouping commas ("16, 231") are transcribed as "16,231". No digits were added or dropped. The header type is lightly broken in places (e.g. "Percent" appears as "Pei cent" / "Per cent", "Number" as "Numbei", "certification" as "cei tification"); these are scan artifacts of the printed words and are transcribed as the intended words. All values are internally consistent: AFL-CIO plus Unaffiliated sums to the Total row in every count column, and each printed percent matches its own ratio to one decimal place, which independently confirms the column assignment of each number. No footnotes are printed under the table.
