  1. 1 The term "collective-bargaining election" is used to cover representation elections requested by a union or other candidate for employee representative or by the employer. This term is used to distinguish this type of election from a decertification election, which is one requested by employees seeking to revoke the representation rights of a union which is already certified or which is recognized by the employer without a Board certification.
  2. 2 Elections involving 2 unions of different affiliations are counted under each affiliation, but only once in the total. Therefore, the total is less than the sum of the figures for the 2 groupings by affiliation.

0 of 18 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 183. Eleven columns: stub plus three under "Elections participated in", three under "Employees involved (number eligible to vote)", and four under "Valid votes cast". The stub heading "Union affiliation" spans all three heading levels, as do "Total", "Won", "Percent won", "Total eligible", and the "Valid votes cast" columns "Total" and "Percent of total eligible". In the "Total" row a raised 2 is printed immediately before 5,428, 430,023 and 385,794; it is recorded after each value as ^2. Decimal points in the percent columns are faint or nearly lost in this scan (they print as e.g. "62 8", "89 7"); they are transcribed as decimals (62.8, 89.7) because the one clear case, 64.2 in the last column, shows a printed period and all these figures are one-decimal percentages. No digits are in doubt. As footnote 2 explains, the Total row is less than the sum of the AFL-CIO and Unaffiliated rows (e.g. 5,428 vs 3,970 + 2,030 = 6,000); transcribed as printed. In footnote 2 the words "the sum of the figures for the 2 groupings" are slightly blurred; the word read as "for" could conceivably be set as "or", but "for" is the only grammatical reading and is the most likely rendering of the thin "f". The row label is printed "AFL-CIO" with a short dash between AFL and CIO.
