Reader’s notes
p. 175. The table has 4 printed columns (stub plus Total, By agreement of all parties, By Board or Court order) and one level of column headings, printed once, above panel A; panel B repeats the same column rules without reprinting the headings. The two panel titles, "A BY EMPLOYERS 1" (printed above the heading row, with no period after the A as far as I can see) and "B. BY UNIONS 5", are carried as label-only section rows so that panel B's rows stay in reading order under the same columns. The centred band labels "Cases" and "Workers", which are printed across the three numeric columns rather than in the stub, are likewise carried as label-only rows with the word placed in the stub cell; each occurs twice, once in each panel. The raised 2 before 41,758, the raised 3 before 1,010 and the raised 4 before 511 are footnote markers printed to the left of those figures; they are written after the value behind a caret. Every column adds across as printed (e.g. 798 + 166 = 964; $391,440 + $402,090 = $793,530; $69,400 + $37,180 = $106,580), so no misprint is suspected. Scan quality is good; the only slightly soft figure is the 25 in the "Employer-dominated union disestablished" row, "By agreement of all parties" column, and the arithmetic (25 + 4 = 29) supports the reading.
