Reader’s notes
p. 167. 15 columns: stub plus three spanner groups (Number of polls = 5 columns, Employees involved = 5 columns, Valid votes cast = 4 columns). The stub heading "Affiliation of union holding union-shop contract" is a tall heading spanning all three header levels, as are "Total" and "Total eligible" within their groups, and "Total" and "Percent of total eligible" in the Valid votes cast group. Decimal points in the percent columns are largely lost in this scan: most percents print as e.g. "58 8", "41 2", "77 4", "78 0", "72 6" with a gap where the period should be, while "45.2" and "43.8" in the last column show the period clearly. Every such value is a one-decimal percentage and each is arithmetically consistent with the counts in its row (e.g. 20/34 = 58.8, 1,050/2,331 = 45.0), so I transcribed them all with the decimal point, as with the comma repairs in "2, 331" -> "2,331". The "Total" row prints with extra leading space before the label and is separated from the two affiliation rows by a horizontal rule; it is a total of those two rows. No part of the table appears cut off by the crop; the caption and the single footnote are fully visible.
