Reader’s notes
p. 157. Grid is 11 columns: stub + 5 unfair labor practice columns + 5 representation columns. This is one table with a single stub, not two side-by-side panels, because the two column groups carry different top headings (unfair labor practice vs. representation) and each printed line carries data for both groups. Section/band labels: each band is introduced by a printed line carrying a centred label over the unfair-labor-practice columns and, except for the last band, a second centred label over the representation columns (CA/RC, CB/RM, CC/RD, then CD with no representation counterpart). Since these are two distinct labels on one printed line, each is placed in the first column of the span it heads (col 1 "Total" for the ULP label, col 6 "Total" for the representation label) rather than in the stub; all other cells on those lines are "". The CD band has no representation label and no representation data. The stub column has no printed heading, so its header cells are "". Blank value cells printed as dash rules (------) are transcribed as "": the Employers column throughout the RC and RD bands; the AFL-CIO affiliates, Unaffiliated unions and Individuals columns throughout the RM band; and Unaffiliated unions for CD "Pending July 1, 1957". Doubtful marks (readings confirmed by the bands' internal arithmetic, which balances in all 10 value columns): - CB band, "Closed fiscal 1958", Employers: printed as 358 followed by a small stray apostrophe-like speck; read as 358 (358 + 186 = 544 = on-docket figure). - RD band, "Pending July 1, 1957", Individuals: a stray dot precedes the digits (". 77"); read as 77 (77 + 485 = 562). - CD band, "Pending July 1, 1957"/"Received fiscal 1958", Unaffiliated unions: the dash rule sits slightly low and the digit 1 slightly high, so their row assignment is visually ambiguous; assigned by arithmetic (blank + 1 = 1 on docket).
