Reader’s notes
p. 187. Nine columns. The table has two stacked panels (A and B) sharing one set of column headings, printed only above panel A; panel B's body follows with no headings of its own. The two centered panel titles ("A. COLLECTIVE-BARGAINING ELECTIONS", "B. DECERTIFICATION ELECTIONS") are transcribed as label-only section rows in panel order. Decimal points: this is a coarse 1-bit scan and the decimal point drops out of many percent cells, which print as e.g. "19 8", "9 4", "100 0", "16 0", "4 5". I have restored the point in those cells (giving 19.8, 9.4, 100.0, 16.0, 4.5), on the same principle as closing the space in "8, 044". The restoration is corroborated arithmetically: with these readings every one of the eight percent columns sums to exactly 100.0, and every row satisfies Number of elections = AFL-CIO + Unaffiliated + No representative (all 40 data rows and both Totals check). Footnote-reference cells: in the "Percent of total" column, rows 3,000-3,999, 4,000-4,999 and 10,000 and over carry no value, only a parenthesized raised "1" pointing to the footnote ("Less than one-tenth of 1 percent"). These are written "(^1)" — printed parentheses kept, raised digit marked with the caret. Two printed values in panel B differ by 0.1 from the figure implied by the counts: "20-29"/no-representative Percent prints 14.2 (14/99 = 14.14) and "30-39"/no-representative Percent prints 12.2 (12/99 = 12.12); "400 and over" in the same column prints 3.1 (3/99 = 3.03). These are forced-rounding adjustments by the typesetter, not misreadings — that column sums to exactly 100.0 only with the printed values, so all three are transcribed as printed. Likewise panel A "600-799"/Percent of total prints .7 (30/4,729 = 0.63) and panel B "90-99"/Percent of total prints 2.7 (4/145 = 2.76); both are needed for their columns to total 100.0. A small stray ink mark sits in the gutter between the "Percent of total" and AFL-CIO "Number" columns on the "100-149" row of panel A; it is scanner/press debris, not a value, and no cell content was taken from it. Row-label ranges are printed with en dashes ("1–9"); transcribed with plain hyphens. The union heading is printed "AFL–CIO" with an en dash; transcribed "AFL-CIO". No part of the table is cut off: the caption, both panel titles, all rows and the footnote are inside the crop.
