Reader’s notes

p. 174. Six columns: stub, Total, and the four columns under "Identification of complainant or petitioner" (AFL-CIO affiliates, Unaffiliated unions, Individuals, Employers). The stub has no printed heading, so the stub cell is empty in all three heading levels; "Total" spans heading levels 2 and 3 and is repeated. The four section lines ("All cases^1", "Unfair labor practice cases", "Representation cases", "Union-shop deauthorization cases") are centred banner rows spanning the body with no values. Doubtful cell: "Unfair labor practice cases" / "Closed fiscal 1957" / Unaffiliated unions prints as ".156" — there is a stray dot (ink speck or stray leader) before the digits. Transcribed as 156, which is what the arithmetic supports (2,160 + 156 + 2,071 + 757 = 5,144, and 156 + 551 + 0 = 707 in the All-cases line). In the "Union-shop deauthorization cases" panel the AFL-CIO affiliates and Employers columns hold dash rules in every row, and the Unaffiliated unions cell on the "Pending July 1, 1956" line is also a dash rule; all are transcribed as "". The printed 0 in that panel's "Closed fiscal 1957" / Unaffiliated unions cell is kept as 0. All row and column sums check out against the printed totals (All cases = unfair labor practice + representation + union-shop deauthorization, and Total = sum of the four identification columns in every row), so no misprints are suspected beyond the stray dot noted above. The caption ("APPENDIX A / Statistical Tables for Fiscal Year 1957 / Table 1.—Total Cases Received, Closed, and Pending (Complainant or Petitioner Identified), Fiscal Year 1957") and the page number at the foot are omitted as instructed. Footnote 1's definition list (CA through UD) is printed as an indented block under the table and is returned as part of the single footnote 1 string; some of its colons after the case codes (CB, CC, RM) are missing or faint in the scan and are transcribed as they appear.
