Reader’s notes

p. 187. 15 columns: stub plus three spanner groups (Number of polls, 5 columns; Employees involved, 5 columns; Valid votes cast, 4 columns). Typography: the scan renders decimal points in the percent columns and digit-grouping commas very faintly or not at all (printed as "68 4", "2 000"); they are transcribed as "68.4" and "2,000" on the evidence of column context and the fact that every percent column carries exactly one decimal place. The AFL-CIO "Valid votes cast / Total" cell images as "6ı7" with a broken middle digit; it is read as 617, which is confirmed by the column summing to the printed total 1,652. All eight numeric columns that admit a check sum exactly to the "Total elections" line (polls 5+7+4+3=19; deauthorization polls 13; continued 6; eligible 2,000; employees deauthorized 831; continued 1,169; valid votes 1,652; cast for deauthorization 848), so no misprints are suspected. The first body row is labelled "Total elections" even though the table reports polls; transcribed as printed. The raised 1 on the last column heading and the raised 2/3 on the AFL, CIO and AFL-CIO stub labels are footnote markers, written behind carets.
