Reader’s notes

p. 177. Layout: this is one 15-column table (shared stub + 7 unfair-labor-practice columns + 7 representation columns), not two panels in the sense of repeated identical headings — the two halves carry different headings ("Number of unfair labor practice cases" / "Identification of complainant" versus "Number of representation cases" / "Identification of petitioner") and share a single stub column at the far left. Each printed body line is therefore transcribed as one row spanning both halves. Section banners: the case-type banners (CA cases, CB cases, CC cases, CD cases on the left; RC cases, RM cases, RD cases on the right) are centred over their half of the page rather than printed in the stub, and two banners share one printed line. I have repeated each banner label in every column it spans and left the stub cell empty for those rows. No banner cell contains data. The fourth banner line has a CD-cases banner on the left only; the representation half of the page is blank for those five rows, so columns 8-14 are "". The stub column has no printed heading, so cell 0 of each header row is "". Footnote markers are raised digits printed to the left of the value; I have moved them behind a caret. In the RC "On docket fiscal 1956" row a raised 8 appears before both the Total (8,373) and the AFL-CIO affiliates figure (4,402); the marker on the Total is small and sits tight against the column rule, so it is the one marker I am least certain about, though footnote 8's 935 cases reconcile the column sum to the total, which supports it. Dash rules ("------") in the AFL affiliates, CIO affiliates and AFL-CIO affiliates columns, and throughout the RM half and the Employers column of the RC and RD sections, are transcribed as "". Arithmetic checks (not corrections — nothing was altered): every "On docket" row equals the sum of the two rows above it, and every "Pending June 30, 1956" row equals "On docket" minus "Closed". The component columns sum exactly to the Total in all rows except the four "On docket fiscal 1956" rows, where the excess is exactly the double-counted merger cases named in footnotes 4 (917, CA), 5 (41, CB), 6 (1, CC), 7 (3, CD) and 8 (935, RC).
