54 of 111 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 3 cells break a sum: 'On docket fiscal 1956', column 5: prints 6,536, rows 'Pending July 1, 1955' to 'Received fiscal 1956' add to 4,638; 'On docket fiscal 1956', column 5: prints 2,132, rows 'Pending July 1, 1955' to 'Received fiscal 1956' add to 1,170; 'On docket fiscal 1956', column 5: prints 4,402, rows 'Pending July 1, 1955' to 'Received fiscal 1956' add to 3,467.

Reader’s notes

p. 176. Eight columns: stub, Total, and the six "Identification of complainant or petitioner" columns. The stub has no printed heading. "Total" is a tall heading spanning the second and third heading levels, so it is repeated in both. The four section lines ("All cases^3", "Unfair labor practice cases", "Representation cases", "Union-shop deauthorization cases") are printed as banner headings spanning the data columns; they are given as label-only rows. The same five row labels repeat under each section. Raised-marker placement: in the source the small 4, 5, 6 and 7 are printed to the LEFT of the values 6,536 / 2,132 / 4,402 / 2 on the "On docket fiscal 1956" lines; per instruction they are written after the value behind a caret. Punctuation damaged by the scan, read from context and confirmed by arithmetic: - Unfair labor practice cases, "Pending June 30, 1956", Total column: printed as "2 318" with no visible comma; transcribed "2,318" (967+72+927+352 = 2,318). - Representation cases, "Pending June 30, 1956", AFL-CIO affiliates column: printed as "1. 166" with a period where the comma belongs; transcribed "1,166" (1,166+114+65+99 = 1,444). - Representation cases, "On docket fiscal 1956", CIO affiliates column: final digit is broken and resembles "]"; read as "1,251" (339+912 = 1,251). Throughout the scan commas and periods print faintly, e.g. "sec" for "sec." in the footnotes; footnote text is given as the characters are legible. The AFL-CIO affiliates column is empty (dash rule) on every "Pending July 1, 1955" line, and the AFL affiliates and CIO affiliates columns are empty (dash rules) on every "Pending June 30, 1956" line, reflecting the Dec. 5, 1955 merger; the Employers column is a dash rule on all five union-shop deauthorization lines. All are given as "". Not a misprint but worth flagging: the "On docket fiscal 1956" rows do not sum across (e.g. All cases 4,375+1,974+6,536+945+3,757+1,813 = 19,400 vs. 17,502 printed); footnotes 4-7 are attached to exactly those cells and presumably explain the double count. Every other row sums correctly across, and the Total column reconciles down the three case-type sections for all five lines. Crop: footnote 3 is cut off by the bottom edge in mid-sentence after "...for purposes of collective bargaining" on the RM line; the rest of footnote 3 and footnotes 4, 5, 6 and 7 (which are cited in the body) are not visible on this image. The caption, the "APPENDIX A" and "Statistical Tables for Fiscal Year 1956" headings have been omitted as instructed.
