Size of Units in Collective-Bargaining and Decertification Elections, Fiscal Year 1955

DECIMAL POINTS: this scan has dropped most of the decimal points in the five percent columns, which are printed in the original as "100 0", "17 5", "8 9" etc. with a visible gap where the point sits. I have restored the point ("100.0", "17.5", "8.9") on the same principle as repairing "8, 044" to "8,044". A handful of points did survive the scan (e.g. the last two body rows of panel A show ".6", ".1", ".3", ".0" with a clear point), which confirms the reading. Percent values below 1 are printed with a leading point and no zero; where that point is not visible I have still written it (".8", ".4", ".0"), so cells such as panel A "500-599" Percent of total are given as ".8" rather than "8". Every such cell was checked against the arithmetic implied by the Number columns and the column total, and all but the three listed below agree exactly. ARITHMETIC CHECK: every Number column in both panels sums down to its printed total, and every body row's four component Numbers (A F L + C I O + Unaffiliated + no representative) sum to the printed Number of elections. Panel A: 1,721+804+324+1,366 = 4,215; panel B: 27+24+4+102 = 157. This gives high confidence in the digits and in the column each one sits in. SUSPECTED MISPRINTS, transcribed exactly as printed: (a) panel A row "500-599", Percent of total, reads .8 but 31/4,215 = .7; (b) panel B row "30-39", A F L affiliates Percent, reads 18.6 but 5/27 = 18.5; (c) panel B row "20-29", Elections in which no representative was chosen Percent, reads 11.7 but 12/102 = 11.8. Nothing was corrected. FOOTNOTE-REFERENCE CELLS: in panel A rows "3,000-3,999" and "4,000-4,999" the Percent of total cell holds no number, only a raised 1 in parentheses pointing to footnote 1 ("Less than one-tenth of 1 percent"). Written as "(^1)". HEADINGS: the spanner "Elections in which representation rights were won by—" is partly covered by a heavy ink blot / scanner artifact across its upper edge, but the wording is legible. The affiliate headings are almost certainly set as "A. F. L. affiliates" and "C. I. O. affiliates"; the abbreviation periods did not survive the scan (the C I O cell retains one stray apostrophe-like speck), so they are given as "A F L affiliates" and "C I O affiliates". The ruled gap between "Percent of total" and the affiliate columns confirms 11 columns in all. PANEL STRUCTURE: the two panels are stacked vertically, not side by side, and share one set of column headings printed only above panel A; panel B repeats the same columns with no headings of its own. The centred sub-captions "A. COLLECTIVE-BARGAINING ELECTIONS" and "B. DECERTIFICATION ELECTIONS" are carried as label-only rows. Note that the "A." line is printed above the column headings on the page; since header rows must precede body rows in the grid it appears here as the first body row. OTHER: under panel B row "400 and over", Unaffiliated unions Percent, a small ink speck sits beneath the final 0 of "25.0"; read as dirt, not a character or marker.
