Reader’s notes

p. 179. The crop ends after California with the line "See footnotes at end of table."; the footnotes for markers 1 (stub heading "Division and State") and 2 (the seven case-type column headings) are printed elsewhere and are not visible on this image, so `footnotes` is empty. The table is continued beyond this crop. The nine division rows sum to 13,054 in "All cases" against the printed Total of 13,336, a shortfall of 282; the per-column shortfalls are CA 104, CB 25, CC 12, CD 0, RC 125, RM 13, RD 3, which add to exactly 282. This is consistent with one or more further rows (e.g. territories/outlying areas) on the following page rather than with a misreading: every division subtotal and every state row I transcribed reconciles exactly with its own components and row sum. Minor image artifacts, all resolved: in the Alabama row a stray ink dot sits just left of the CD value, which is a printed 0; the Missouri row has a stray tick in the RD column margin and the North Dakota/Missouri RD values (13 each) are clear. "Oregon" shows an unusually large CA figure (217) relative to its All cases of 349, but the row sums exactly to 349 and the Pacific column subtotals reconcile, so it is transcribed as printed.

p. 180. This crop is the final (continuation) page of Table 6, carrying only the "Outlying areas" block; the preceding pages hold the divisions and States. The column headings are printed on this page, so they are transcribed. Footnote markers: the "RD" column heading carries a raised 3, but no footnote 3 is printed under the table on this crop — it presumably appears on an earlier page of the table or is a misprint for 2 (the other six case-type headings all carry a raised 2). Footnote 1 as printed reads "Bureau of the Census, U S. Department of Commerce" — the period after the "U" is not visible in the scan (either dropped in printing or lost to the scan); transcribed as it appears. Footnote 2 is printed with no terminal period. The row labels are indented under "Outlying areas"; that indentation is not represented in the stub text. Arithmetic checks pass: each row's seven case-type cells sum to its "All cases" value, and the five area rows sum to the 282 "Outlying areas" total. Note that "Canada" and "Virgin Islands" are printed with no leader-dot run reaching the rule in the same way as the others, but the labels themselves are clear.
