Reader’s notes
p. 178. Nine printed columns: stub, All cases, then CA/CB/CC/CD under "Unfair labor practice cases" and RC/RM/RD under "Representation cases". The stub heading "Industrial group" and the "All cases" heading are tall single headings spanning both heading levels, so each is repeated in both. Arithmetic check: every body row's seven case-type cells sum exactly to its "All cases" figure, the indented sub-group rows sum to each major-group line (Manufacturing 8,287; Mining 184; Transportation 1,645), and the nine major-group lines sum to the printed Total row in all eight numeric columns (13,336 / 4,362 / 1,382 / 345 / 82 / 6,160 / 545 / 460). No misprints detected. In the "Coal mining" row there is a small stray ink speck in the gutter between the CB and CC columns (just right of the value 17); it is scanner noise, not a decimal point or footnote marker, and has been omitted. "Crude petroleum and natural gas production" has no RD value printed other than 0, which is transcribed as 0 (not blank). Footnote punctuation is partly lost to the scan: footnote 1 reads "Source Standard" with the colon faint or dropped, "U. S Bureau" with the second period dropped, and no terminal period after 1945. Standard punctuation has been restored in the transcription; the wording is as printed. Minor type damage affects some i-dots and periods throughout (e.g. "Manufacturing", "Mining", "Finance, insurance"), but no digit is in doubt.
