  1. 1 The union-shop authorization poll was abolished by Public Law 189, signed by the President Oct. 22, 1951. However, the law still provides for deauthorization polls when appropriate.
  2. 2 Union-shop deauthorization petitions (UD cases).
  3. 3 Includes 15 union-shop deauthorization petitions.

112 of 112 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 290. Seven columns: stub plus Total, A. F. L. affiliates, C. I. O. affiliates, Unaffiliated unions, Individuals, Employers. Heading spans: the "Identification of complainant or petitioner" spanner rule covers only the four columns A. F. L. affiliates through Individuals as printed; "Total" and "Employers" sit outside it and are tall single headings spanning the lower two heading levels. "Number of cases" spans all six data columns. The stub has no printed heading. Column-head punctuation: the scan renders the abbreviations as "A F. L" and "C. I O." because several periods are broken or dropped in this 1-bit scan; transcribed in the conventional form "A. F. L." and "C. I. O.". Footnote markers: all markers are raised digits printed to the LEFT of the value in the original (e.g. a raised 2 before "1" in the Individuals column) and have been moved behind a caret per the convention. The marker on "1,796" (Total, "Cases received July 1, 1951-June 30, 1952^1" in the union-shop section) is rendered by the scan as a glyph resembling "8", but the footnote list under the table runs 1, 2, 3 and the text "Includes 15 union-shop deauthorization petitions" matches the 15 UD cases in that row's Individuals cell, so it is read as 3. The same scan artifact affects the printed footnote marker itself in the third footnote line. Section lines: "All cases", "Unfair labor practice cases", "Representation cases" and "Union-shop authorization cases^1" are centered banner rules across the data columns with no values; their labels are placed in the stub cell. Empty cells: the Employers column in all five union-shop authorization rows carries a dashed leader rule ("------"), transcribed as "". Minor artifact: "1,823" (Unfair labor practice cases, "Cases received", A. F. L. affiliates) has a small stray tick immediately after the final digit in the scan; it is not a footnote marker — the row sums to the printed total 5,454 with 1,823. Arithmetic check (no values altered): every row's five identification columns sum exactly to the printed Total, and the Unfair labor practice + Representation + Union-shop figures sum exactly to the "All cases" figures in each of the five lines. No misprints detected.
