474 of 475 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'New Mexico', column 2: prints 135, columns 3 to 10 add to 136; 'Mountain', column 5: prints 6, rows 'Montana' to 'Nevada' add to 7.
Reader’s notes
p. 309. Ten columns: stub plus All cases, CA/CB/CC/CD under "Unfair labor practice cases", RC/RM/RD under "Representation cases", and the tall "Union-shop authorization cases^2^3" column. "Division and State^1", "All cases" and the union-shop heading each span both heading levels, so they are repeated in both. Footnote markers 4 and 5 are printed as raised digits BEFORE the figure in the union-shop column (e.g. "4 759", "5 60"); per the convention they are written after the value (759^4, 60^5). Doubtful cell: New Mexico, CC column, read as "1". Arithmetic argues it may be a printed 0 — the New Mexico row as transcribed sums to 136 against a printed All-cases figure of 135, and the Mountain states' CC entries sum to 7 against the printed Mountain CC total of 6. Both discrepancies vanish if that cell is 0. The glyph looked like a 1 on two passes, so it is transcribed as seen; treat it as the single least certain figure in the grid. South Dakota, union-shop column: a stray speck/tick precedes the digit ("'0"); it is scanner dirt, not a footnote marker — the cell is 0, confirmed by the row sum (26) and the West North Central column total (635). Likewise a stray tick sits before 62 in the West North Central RM cell; the value is 62. South Carolina, union-shop column: the leading digit is broken in the scan and reads ambiguously, but the South Atlantic column total (188) confirms 12. Every other row total and every division column total cross-foots exactly to the printed figures.
