Reader’s notes

p. 304. Header geometry: the rule under "Number of cases" begins at the vertical rule to the right of the Total column, and the heading is centred over the five identification columns, so "Number of cases" is recorded as spanning columns 2-6 only, and "Total" is treated as a tall heading occupying all three heading levels. A reader who expects "Number of cases" to cover the Total column as well should be aware of this reading. The stub has no printed heading. Footnote markers in the Total column of the "Union-shop authorization cases" panel are small and partly broken in the scan. The marker on 6,790 is clearly 2; the marker on 7,781 reads ambiguously (2 or 3) and the marker on 6,843 reads ambiguously (3 or 8). They are transcribed as 2 and 3 respectively because the footnote texts match the arithmetic: 991 + 6,790 = 7,781 with "Includes 8 UD cases" (marker 2), while 6,843 goes with "Includes 7 UD cases" (marker 3) and 938 with "Includes 1 UD case" (marker 4). There is no footnote 8. In the "Union-shop authorization cases" panel the Employers column holds a dash rule in every row; these are recorded as empty cells. The section lines "All cases", "Unfair labor practice cases", "Representation cases" and "Union-shop authorization cases^1" are printed centred across the data columns rather than in the stub; they are placed in the stub column per the grid convention. Date ranges in the row labels are printed with a short dash between "1950" and "June"; transcribed as an en dash. No arithmetic was checked or corrected; all values are as printed.
