Reader’s notes
p. 187. 19 columns. Group boundaries are set by the heavy vertical rules: "Elections won by—" spans the three Number/Percent pairs plus the single "No union" column; "Eligible voters" spans Number and Percent casting valid votes; "Valid votes cast for—" spans Total, the three Number/Percent pairs and the second "No union" column. Arithmetic confirms this: in the Total row 2,092+858+939+1,625 = 5,514 (Number of elections) and 131,345+155,482+90,533+138,888 = 516,248 (Total valid votes). Every one of the 19 columns also foots from the ten detail rows to the Total row exactly. Decimal points: the 1-bit scan drops most of the periods in the percentage figures (they print as "37 9", "15 6", "100 0" etc., while a few such as 17.0, 61.7, 49.0 and 45.7 survive). Every percentage cell in this table carries one decimal place, so I have written the decimal point in all of them; no digits were altered. For the same reason I restored the periods in the abbreviations "A. F. of L." and "C. I. O.", which the scan renders inconsistently in both the column headings and the row labels (e.g. the stub of row 7 images as "A. F. of L. affiliates-A. F of L. affiliates" and of row 9 as "C. I. O affiliates-C I. O. affiliates"); the headings for the same groups print both ways on the left and right halves of the table. Terminal periods on footnotes 1, 3 and 5 are likewise not visible in the scan and were restored. Two printed percentages do not agree with the figures they are computed from; both are transcribed as printed. (1) Total row, "Valid votes cast for—, A. F. of L. affiliates, Percent": reads 25.5, but 131,345/516,248 = 25.4. The digit is small and could conceivably be a 4; the neighbouring 30.1 and 17.5 in the same row both check out. (2) Last row, "Valid votes cast for—, Unaffiliated unions, Percent": reads 33.1, but 5,184/15,690 = 33.0. Footnote markers 1-6 are printed as raised digits immediately to the left of the figure in the "Number of elections" column; they are attached to those values (377^1, 174^2, 83^3, 133^4, 33^5, 29^6), not to the row labels. Cells holding only a dash rule ("------") are given as "". A narrow strip of rotated marginal type is clipped at the right edge of the crop, outside the table rules; it is not part of the table.
