Industrial distribution of unfair labor practice, representation, and union-authorization cases received during the fiscal year 1949

p. 179. Ten columns: stub, "All cases", four unfair-labor-practice columns (CA, CB, CC, CD), three representation columns (RC, RM, RD), and "Union-authorization cases". "All cases", the stub heading and "Union-authorization cases^2" are tall headings spanning both heading levels, so they are repeated in each. All footnote markers in the column spanner headings are raised 2s referring to footnote 2 ("See appendix B, for definition of types of cases."); the CD marker is somewhat blotted in the scan and could be read as a 3, but footnote 3 is a value note ("Includes 8 UD cases."), so it is transcribed as CD^2 like its neighbours. The raised markers on values are printed to the LEFT of the number in this table (e.g. "3 12,190" in the Total row, "4 1,997" for Food and kindred products); per instruction they are written after the value behind a caret. Doubtful glyphs, all resolved by arithmetic: the "All cases" cell for "Electrical machinery, equipment, and supplies" is preceded by a stray ink dot ("·536"); it is transcribed as 536. The RM cell for "Transportation equipment" is preceded by a stray tilde-like mark ("~ 8"); transcribed as 8. The "Water transportation" row genuinely shows 69 in both CA and CB. Verification: every one of the 44 body rows sums across its eight component columns to its printed "All cases" figure, the nine major-industry rows sum to the printed Total row in every column, and the detail rows sum to their group subtotals (manufacturing details to 15,482; mining details to 228; transportation/communication details to 2,915; the three transportation-equipment details to 718). No internal inconsistency or suspected misprint was found. Footnote 1 begins "Source." with what reads as a period rather than a colon in the scan, and footnote 4 ends without a period; both are transcribed as printed. Nothing appears cut off by the crop.
