Reader’s notes

p. 174. Seven columns: stub, Total, and the five "Identification of complainant" columns. The spanner "Number of cases" is centred over the five identification columns only (the rule beneath it starts at the left edge of the A. F of L column); "Total" is a tall single heading running through all three heading levels, and the stub has no printed heading. Section lines (NLRA—C cases, CA cases, CB cases, CC cases, CD cases) are printed centred across the data columns, not in the stub; they are given here as label-only rows. Dash-rule cells transcribed as "": the whole "Cases received July 1, 1948–June 30, 1949" row in the NLRA—C section (all six data cells are dash rules), and the entire Employers column for the NLRA—C and CA sections. The raised 2 in the CA section is printed to the left of 1,485 (Cases received) and of 1,179 (Cases closed); it is recorded after the value as 1,485^2 and 1,179^2. Heading abbreviations are printed with irregular periods — "A. F of L affiliates" (no period after F) and "C. I O affiliates" (no period after O) — transcribed as printed. The dash in the date-range row labels is a short dash whose exact form (hyphen / en dash / em dash) is not reliably distinguishable in this scan; it is rendered uniformly as an en dash. The dash in "NLRA—C cases" is clearly longer and is given as an em dash. Footnote 1 ends without a period, as printed. All row totals agree with the sum of their component columns; no arithmetic was performed on or applied to any cell.
