Reader’s notes
p. 119. 19 columns. Column 1 is a tall single heading printed "Num-ber of elec-tions", which happens to repeat the wording of the spanner heading "Number of elections" over columns 2-8; they are distinct columns. The spanner "Number of elections" covers the three Number/Percent pairs AND the "No union authorized" column (confirmed by the printed figures: 12,820 + 2,312 + 2,469 + 357 = 17,958). "Total valid votes cast" (col 11) is a tall single heading with no spanner above it, separate from the "Eligible voters" group. Doubtful cell: row "A. F. of L. affiliates", column "Total valid votes cast" — the thousands separator is scanned as what looks like a period ("878. 043") rather than the comma used elsewhere in that column. Transcribed as 878,043; the column's printed figures sum to the printed total (878,043 + 504,928 + 246,359 = 1,629,330), so the digits are certain and only the punctuation glyph is in question. Possible misprint: row "Total", column "A. F. of L. affiliates authorized / Percent" reads 71.3, while 12,820/17,958 = 71.39 (i.e. 71.4 if rounded); transcribed as printed. All other printed percentages and totals are internally consistent. Empty cells in the three affiliation rows are printed as dash rules (------), rendered as "".
