Reader’s notes
p. 96. 13 printed columns: stub, Total, the ten fiscal years 1938-47, and a final "July 1-Aug. 21, 1947" column set off by a double rule. Single heading level. The 1938 column holds a parenthesised raised footnote reference, not a value, in six rows; transcribed as "(^1)" to keep the marker distinguishable from a printed number. In the "Workers placed on preferential hiring list" row the 1939 and 1940 cells carry a dashed rule rather than figures, so both are "". The four marked cells in the 1940 column print the raised 3 before the figure ("^3 10,514"); it is written after the value per convention. Footnote markers 2 and 3 are typographically near-identical to an 8 in this scan (both the raised markers and the footnote-line numerals). They are read as 2 and 3 from the footnote sequence and from sense: footnote 2 (period July 1-Aug. 21, 1947) attaches to the Total heading, and footnote 3 (Republic Steel Corp.) attaches to the 1940 figures it describes. The Total heading's two markers are read as 1 and 2. Arithmetic check (not an edit): every row's printed Total equals the sum of its ten fiscal-year columns plus the July 1-Aug. 21, 1947 column exactly, in all eight rows, including the $12,418,000 back-pay row. No misprints detected.
