Reader’s notes

p. 80. SCOPE: the crop is a whole printed page (p. 72, running head "Twelfth Annual Report of the National Labor Relations Board"), not a single-table crop. It contains three separate tables stacked vertically, each with its own caption and its own column structure: (1) "Table 8.—Disposition of representation cases closed during the fiscal year 1947, by stage and method—Continued" (4 columns); (2) "Table 9.—Forms of remedy in unfair labor practice cases closed during the fiscal year 1947, by identification of complainant" (stub + Total + 4 complainant columns, body split by two spanning band rows "Cases" and "Workers"); (3) "Table 10.—Formal action taken during the fiscal year 1947" (stub + 6 columns under All cases / Unfair labor practice cases / Representation cases, each split into "Number of cases" and "Formal actions 1"). Because the grid must be rectangular and the file is indexed t0, only the first table (Table 8—Continued) is transcribed above. Tables 9 and 10 need their own crops; they are NOT represented in the grid and would otherwise be lost for this page. The two footnotes printed at the foot of the page belong to Table 10, not to Table 8, so `footnotes` is empty. For reference they read: "1 The figure for actions is less than the number of cases involved because a group of individual cases are sometimes consolidated for 1 action." and "2 Includes 25 prehearing election cases in which the Board directed the opening and counting of challenged ballots." Table 8 detail: indentation in the stub marks a hierarchy (After Board decision > Certified / Dismissed / Withdrawn > their method sub-rows); the printed labels are kept verbatim without the indentation. "Stipulated election and cross check", "Ordered election" and "Prehearing election and Board decision" each occur twice, once under Certified and once under Dismissed. Percent cells are printed without a leading zero (".9", ".7", ".2", ".1", ".8", ".6") and are transcribed that way. The scan is a coarse 1-bit image in which 3 and 8 are easily confused; the readings 14.3 (After Board decision), 3.4 (Certified / Stipulated election and cross check) and 3.3 (Dismissed) were each confirmed by the column arithmetic rather than by glyph shape alone. All internal sums check out as printed: 442+94+674+150 = 1,360 Certified; 142+172+16+92 = 422 Dismissed; 1,360+422+78 = 1,860; 13.0+4.0+.8 = 17.8; 10.4+3.3+.6 = 14.3. No misprints detected in this table. The table is a continuation, so the rows above "After Board decision" appear on the preceding page.
