Reader’s notes

p. 123. Twelve columns: stub plus eleven numeric columns. "Number of elections and cross checks" and "Eligible voters" are tall single headings that span both heading levels; "Elections and cross checks won by" spans the four columns A. F. of L. affiliates / C I O affiliates / Unaffiliated unions / No union, and "Valid votes cast" spans the five columns Total / A. F. of L. affiliates / C I O affiliates / Unaffiliated unions / Against unions. The two "A. F. of L. affiliates" headings are set vertically and the periods after the initials are faint and inconsistently inked in the scan (the first reads closer to "A. F of L. affiliates", the second closer to "A F of L affiliates"); I have written both in the conventional form. Likewise the vertical "C I O affiliates" headings show no periods between the initials, which is how I have transcribed them. The scan carries scattered ink specks that can resemble punctuation, e.g. a stray mark before the "4" in Arizona / A. F. of L. affiliates won, before "892" in Arizona / C I O valid votes, before "689" in Louisiana / Unaffiliated valid votes, before "6" in Colorado / Unaffiliated won, and an apostrophe-like mark after the "0" in Nevada / Against unions and after the "1" in South Carolina / Against unions (1,804). None of these are footnote markers or digits; I have read them as specks. Arithmetic checks (not corrections — nothing was altered): in every state row the four valid-votes component columns sum exactly to the printed "Total" valid votes, and each of the eleven numeric columns summed over the 53 state rows equals the printed "Total" row exactly. No internal inconsistencies were found. Michigan's eligible voters (22,382) looks low relative to its 213 elections but is confirmed both by its own row sum and by the column total. Nevada and Alaska are printed as all zeros across every column. No footnotes are printed beneath the table.
