Reader’s notes
p. 94. Ten columns: stub, "Number of elections and cross-checks", two under "Elections won by petitioner", five under "Valid votes cast for—", and a final "Percent of total votes cast for petitioner". The stub heading and the two tall single headings are repeated across both heading levels. Three cells are transcribed as I read them but fail arithmetic checks that every other row and column in the table passes; the scan is a coarse bitonal image and in each case a single degraded digit is the likely cause, so a user should verify these three against the page: 1. "Unaffiliated union on ballot" (the row under "C. I. O. affiliate, petitioner", carrying marker 6), "Unaffiliated union" column: read 43,002. Both the row (40,019 + 43,002 + 3,685 = 86,706, printed total 86,726) and the column (43,002 + 3,824 = 46,826, printed subtotal 46,846) imply 43,022. 2. "C. I. O. and unaffiliated union on ballot" (under "Employer petitioner"), "Total" column: read 1,230. The row components (645 + 565 + 29) sum to 1,239, and the "Employer petitioner" total of 7,305 less the other five panel rows also leaves 1,239. 3. "A. F. of L. alone", "A. F. of L." column: read 270. The row (337 - 58) implies 279, and the column (2,145 + 2 + 270 = 2,417 against the printed 2,426) also implies 279. Every other check verifies exactly: all four section blocks sum to their subtotal rows in all eight numeric columns, the four subtotals sum to the "Total" row, and the four vote-detail columns sum to the "Total" vote column within each row. Dash rules ("------") in the body, which mark not-applicable cells, are given as "". The "0" in the "No union" column of "A. F. of L. and unaffiliated union on ballot" (under "Employer petitioner") is a printed zero, not a blank. Small ink specks sit in the stub and in blank header cells; the speck before "411" is an artifact, not a footnote marker, as footnote 7 is attached to the row above it in a different block and no footnote 7 reference is missing. The caption, which is excluded here, prints "participcting" for "participating".
