Reader’s notes

p. 92. Six columns: stub, Total, and four columns under the spanner "Identification of complainant". The stub column has no printed heading, so cell 0 of both heading levels is empty; "Total" is a tall single heading spanning both levels and is repeated. "Cases" and "Workers" are centered banner lines printed across the value columns (each between horizontal rules); they are transcribed as section rows with the label in the stub and empty value cells. The label of the first row under "Workers" is printed "Workers resinstated to remedy discriminatory discharge" — "resinstated" appears to be a misprint for "reinstated" in the original; transcribed as printed. Its label wraps onto two printed lines and is joined here. A partial line of text at the very top of the crop ("Less than 0.1 percent.") is the tail of a footnote belonging to the preceding table on the page, above this table's caption; it is not a footnote of this table and is excluded. No footnotes are printed under this table. A small stray ink speck sits in the "Workers placed on preferential hiring list" row between the Total and A. F. of L. columns; it is not a digit or a footnote marker. All printed row totals cross-check against the sum of the four complainant columns (576, 54, 39, 116, 1,919, 1,973, $997,270, 125), which supports the column assignment and the reading of ambiguous digits such as 583 and $581,510.
