  1. 1 It should be noted that the votes cast in these polls do not necessarily come solely from members of the unions who filed the strike notice, but often include votes cast by employees in the unit voted who are members of other organizations or who are not members of any organization.
  2. 2 Polls were conducted in 232 separate cases, but involving 381 separate voting units. Where the results of multiple plant or multiple unit polls have been certified to the President separately, they have been tabulated as separate polls.
  3. 3 Includes 12 polls in which no votes were cast and 2 polls which resulted in a tie vote.

28 of 28 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 96. Eight columns: stub, a tall "Total^2 number of polls", a two-column "Results of polls" spanner, a tall "Total number eligible to vote", and a three-column "Valid votes cast" spanner. The tall headings and the stub heading are repeated in both header levels, and the spanners are repeated in each column they cover. Footnote marker 3 is printed as a raised 3 to the LEFT of the values 58 (Total row) and 48 (A. F. of L. affiliate row), in the "Voted against interruption of work" column; per instructions it is written after the number as 58^3 and 48^3. The marker is clearly raised and set off from the digits, so there is no ambiguity about the numbers themselves. The last column is printed "Votes against interrup-tion to work" — "to work" rather than the "of work" used in the parallel heading two columns earlier. Transcribed as printed; this looks like an original typesetting inconsistency, not a misreading. All columns foot correctly against the Total row (e.g. 311+27+43=381; 61,244+34,103+34,314=129,661; 10,855+6,612+10,779=28,246), which corroborates the digits read. Nothing is cut off by the crop.
