Reader’s notes

p. 90. Ten columns: stub plus "Number of elections and pay-roll checks", two columns under "Elections won by petitioner" (Number, Percent), five under "Valid votes cast" (Total; For A. F. of L. affiliates; For C. I. O. affiliates; For unaffiliated unions; For no union), and "Percent of total votes cast for petitioner". Footnote markers 1 through 8 are printed as raised digits to the left of the values in the "Number of elections and pay-roll checks" column (rows "No other party on ballot" and "Congress of Industrial Organizations on ballot" etc.); they are transcribed after the value behind a caret. No footnote text is printed within this crop — the table closes with a double rule at the bottom of the image, so the notes keyed 1-8 fall outside it. Cells shown as a dash rule (------) in the votes columns are transcribed as "". Arithmetic observations, transcribed as printed, not corrected: the three petitioner groups sum to 4,700 elections, not the printed Total of 4,712, and their valid votes sum to 1,049,495 against the printed Total of 1,072,594 (column shortfalls of 1,895 / 3,279 / 16,112 / 1,813 for the A. F. of L., C. I. O., unaffiliated and no-union columns, totalling the same 23,099). The Total row is internally consistent (199,989 + 445,528 + 183,066 + 244,011 = 1,072,594) and the "elections won" column does add to 3,577, which suggests a further petitioner category counted in the Total but not printed on this page. Every other panel and subtotal checks out exactly. The percent cell in the last row is printed as ". 0" and is transcribed ".0". "322" in the "Other unaffiliated union on ballot" row sits under "For no union"; it is the only value in that row besides Total and the unaffiliated column, and 11,860 + 322 = 12,182 confirms its placement.

p. 91. CROP COVERAGE: this image is the right-hand continuation half of a table that runs across a two-page spread (file name indicates p0090 + p0091). No column headings of any kind are printed on this image, so `header_rows` is empty. Critically, the stub column holding the row labels is NOT on this image — it is on the facing page — so cell 0 of each row here is the leftmost printed numeric column, not a stub. The left edge of that first column is itself cut by the crop, but its values are right-aligned against the column rule and are fully legible; I cannot rule out that a further column lies to its left, entirely outside the crop. COLUMN COUNT: nine printed columns are visible, delimited by vertical rules: (1) small whole-number column; (2) and (3) two columns filled entirely with dash rules; (4) a total column; (5)-(8) four component columns; (9) a column filled entirely with dash rules. Columns 2, 3 and 9 contain only dash rules in every row, hence all "". ROW STRUCTURE: the top row sits above a horizontal rule and is a total line — it equals the sum of the six rows beneath it in every column (col 1: 3+3+2+1+2+1 = 12; col 4: 777+789+310+14+16,229+4,980 = 23,099). The six detail rows also cross-foot: in each, col 5 + col 6 + col 7 + col 8 = col 4 (e.g. 993+2,822+977+188 = 4,980), and the total row likewise (1,895+3,279+16,112+1,813 = 23,099). These checks all balance, which raises confidence that each number is assigned to the correct column. There is roughly one row of white space between the rule under the total row and the "777" row; it may hold a section label printed in the off-crop stub, but nothing is printed in the visible columns there, so I did not add an empty row for it. DOUBTFUL CELLS: (a) last row, column 1 — a small raised "9" is printed before the figure "1"; I read it as a footnote marker and transcribed it as 1^9. (b) Last row, column 7 — a small low dash-like mark is printed immediately left of "977" inside the cell. It is too low and too short to be a clear raised footnote marker and may be a speck or broken rule; since 993+2,822+977+188 = 4,980 exactly, the value itself is certainly 977, so I transcribed the cell as plain "977" without a marker. No footnotes are printed on this crop; any footnote text, including the one keyed by the raised 9, must appear on the facing page or below the crop.
