Number of elections and pay-roll checks and number of votes cast for participating unions during the fiscal year 1943

The table has 18 columns: the stub, "Number of elections and pay-roll checks", six columns under "Elections and pay-roll checks won", two under "Eligible voters", and seven under "Valid votes cast" (Total; Number/Percent for each of three union groups; and the tall "Against unions" column at the far right, which sits inside the "Valid votes cast" spanner). Footnote markers 1-6 are raised digits printed immediately BEFORE the figures in the "Number of elections and pay-roll checks" column (e.g. a raised 1 before 1,315); per instruction they are written after the value behind a caret. The marker on the "A. F. of L. affiliates-unaffiliated unions" row (160) is faint and sits low, but is read as 5 on the basis of the footnote sequence and because footnote 5 is the one printed in the right-hand footnote block alongside footnote 6. Empty cells in the body are printed as dashed rules (sometimes one long dash rule running across two or four adjacent columns, e.g. columns 3-6 on the "Unaffiliated unions" row and columns 12-15 on the same row); all are transcribed as "". Arithmetic checks (not corrections - nothing was altered): every data column sums exactly to its printed Total row, and all printed percentages reproduce from the adjacent counts. For example 267,118 + 515,271 + 140,780 + 203,332 = 1,126,501, and the seven group figures in each column sum to the printed total. No misprint was detected. Several row labels wrap over two printed lines with end-of-line hyphenation and have been rejoined: "A. F. of L. affiliates-C. I. | O. affiliates", "A. F. of L. affiliates-unaffili- | ated unions", "C. I. O. affiliates-unaffili- | ated unions", and "A. F. of L.-C. I. O.-unaf- | filiated unions". The internal hyphens joining two union names (e.g. "affiliates-C. I. O.") are part of the label, not line-break hyphens, and have been kept.
