Reader’s notes
p. 98. 13 columns: stub plus four fiscal-year panels of three columns each (these are repeated headings over the same page, not side-by-side panels of a split table). The stub heading "Method and stage of disposition" spans both heading levels; each "Fiscal year ..." spans its three columns. In the "Cases on docket during year" row the six percent cells hold only a dash rule, so they are "". The scan is a coarse bitonal image in which 3/8, 5/6 and 6/0 are hard to tell apart. Four cells looked ambiguous and were resolved by the table's own arithmetic; each resolution makes the column sum to the printed total and matches the printed percentages: - "With Intermediate Report", FY1943 Number of cases: read as 35 (35+97+167+119 = 418, the printed compliance total; the printed .9 percent of cases closed also implies 35, not 85). - "After formal action, before Intermediate Report", FY1943 Number of cases: read as 3 (522+3+5+34+2 = 566, the printed dismissed total). - "With Court Order", FY1941 Number of cases: read as 61 (38+79+127+61 = 305; 61/4,683 = 1.3 percent as printed). - "After formal action" (under Withdrawn), FY1940 Percent of cases on docket: read as .3 (20/6,836 = 0.29). Printed percentages that do not match the printed counts, transcribed exactly as printed: "With Consent Decree" FY1943 Percent of cases closed is 4.4 (167/3,849 = 4.34); "Before formal action" (under Dismissed) FY1943 shows 13.5 and 10.0 (522/3,849 = 13.56, 522/5,177 = 10.08); "After formal action, before Intermediate Report" FY1942 shows 0.0 in both percent columns (3/5,456 = 0.05). Several other cells are rounded down rather than to nearest (e.g. 1,488 shown as 38.6; 789 shown as 14.4); all are left as printed. The vertical string "558154—44—7" in the left margin is a printer's signature mark, not table content, and is omitted. The caption carries footnote marker 1, which is reproduced in the footnote list but, per instruction, the caption itself is omitted. A stray ink mark sits below the last row label; it is not text. Every column of counts was checked against its printed total and all four years balance (adjusted + compliance + withdrawn + dismissed + closed otherwise = total closed).
