Reader’s notes
p. 91. 18 columns: stub; "Number of elections and pay-roll checks"; six columns under "Elections and pay-roll checks won"; two under "Eligible voters"; "Valid votes"; six under "Valid votes cast"; "Against unions". The stub heading and the three tall single headings ("Number of elections and pay-roll checks", "Valid votes", "Against unions") are repeated in all three heading levels; under "Eligible voters" the two headings "Number" and "Percent casting valid votes" occupy both lower levels, so "Percent casting valid votes" is repeated in levels 2 and 3. Footnote markers are printed as raised digits BEFORE the figure they attach to; I have moved them behind the value after a caret. Where two markers are printed together I chained them: "4,212^1^2" (printed "1 2 4,212"), "1,478^1^5" (printed "1 5 1,478"), "222^6^7" (printed "6 7 222"). The marker on 1,296,567 (Total, Eligible voters-Number) and on 1,067,037 (Total, Valid votes) are likewise printed as raised "1" and "3" ahead of the numbers. Cells printed as a dash rule ("------") are transcribed as "" — these occur wherever a participating-union group had no candidate of that affiliation (e.g. the C. I. O. columns on the "A. F. of L. affiliates" row). Four row labels wrap over two printed lines and have been joined, repairing the end-of-line hyphens: "A. F. of L. affiliates—C. | I. O. affiliates", "A. F. of L. affiliates—un- | affiliated unions", "C. I. O. affiliates—un- | affiliated unions", "A. F. of L.-C. I. O.— | unaffiliated unions". The dashes inside these labels are printed as em-dashes except in "A. F. of L.-C. I. O.—", where the first connector is a short hyphen as printed. Nothing is computed or corrected. Note for the reader that the "Elections and pay-roll checks won" figures in the Total row (1,522 + 1,723 + 391 = 3,636) do not sum to the 4,212 total elections; footnote 2 bears on the composition of that figure. Scan quality is good throughout; the only slightly soft cells are the percent 36.1 in the "A. F. of L. affiliates—C. I. O. affiliates" row (By A. F. of L. affiliates—Percent), which duplicates the Total row's 36.1 but is legible, and the stray ink speck in the empty "By unaffiliated unions—Percent" cell of that same row, which is not a digit.
