Reader’s notes

p. 32. Five columns: stub, Number, Percent of cases closed, Percent of cases on docket, Workers involved. The stub column carries no printed heading, so cell 0 of both header levels is empty; "Workers involved" is a tall single heading spanning both levels and "Cases" spans the three middle columns. Two cells in the Workers involved column print what looks like a period rather than a comma in the thousands position, and I transcribed the glyph as I read it: "Cases closed before formal action" shows "1,457.392" (second separator a dot) and "Cases closed otherwise" (under "Cases closed before formal action") shows "16.589". Both are almost certainly commas whose tails were lost in this 1-bit scan — the intended values are presumably 1,457,392 and 16,589 — but I did not normalize them. Treat these two cells as the least reliable in the grid. The row "Cases closed otherwise" immediately after "Cases closed by compliance with intermediate report" (under "Cases closed after hearing") is printed with leader dots and dash rules across all four value columns, so all four are "". Under "Cases closed before hearing", the "Cases closed otherwise" row prints a parenthesized raised 2 in both percent columns; I rendered these as "(^2)" (footnote 2: less than 0.1 percent), not as numeric values. In the last "Cases closed by compliance" row (under "Cases closed after court action") the Number cell prints a raised 1 before 188; I recorded it as the footnote marker "188^1", not as part of the figure. "Cases pending, June 30, 1941" has leader dots in the Percent of cases closed column, left as "". The caption line "Cases on docket, July 1940–June 1941" prints "Junc" for "June" because of a degraded e; I transcribed the intended word. The date ranges use a short dash, transcribed as an en dash. Arithmetic check (not corrected, for the reader's awareness): the subtotals under "Cases closed after formal action" (108 + 87 + 855 + 232 = 1,282) and under "Cases closed before formal action" (4,097 + 1,000 + 1,981 + 36 = 7,114) both reconcile, and 7,114 + 1,282 = 8,396, so the Number column is internally consistent as printed.
