Reader’s notes

p. 31. No footnotes are printed under this table. Cells shown as a dash rule (------) in the scan are transcribed as "" — these occur in the 1938-39 through 1940-41 columns of "8 (1), (2), (4)"; the 1939-40 and 1940-41 columns of "8 (1), (4), (5)" and of "8 (1), (2), (3), (4), (5)"; and all four columns of "8 (1), (2), (4), (5)". In the "Recapitulation" block the leading digit 8 of the five row labels is badly degraded in the scan, printing variously like a pound sign, an f or a long s ("f (4)", "( (5)"); the five labels are transcribed as "8 (1)" through "8 (5)" since the block heading and the arithmetic make the intent unambiguous. The en dash in "Recapitulation-By individual subsections of section 8 of the act" is printed as an em dash in the original. The column-head year spans are printed with en dashes (1937-38, etc.). Arithmetic check (not used to alter any transcribed value): each of the four year columns' detail rows sums exactly to its "Total cases" figure (6,807 / 4,618 / 3,934 / 4,817), and each recapitulation line equals the sum of the detail rows containing that subsection, including "8 (5)" 1940-41 = 1,593, which confirms the doubtful-looking final digits of that cell.
