Reader’s notes

p. 156. Four columns: stub "Name of case", "Hearing" spanning "Opened"/"Closed", and "Decision issued". Excluded as caption matter above the column rules: the section line "B. CASES HEARD DURING THE FISCAL YEAR 1939-40—Continued" and the centred italic subtitle "Representation cases". Both sit above the box head, so neither is a body row; flagging them because "Representation cases" marks which part of the list this page belongs to. No numbered footnotes are printed on this crop. The only line under the table is "See footnotes at end of table." (slightly clipped by the bottom of the crop); since it carries no marker it is recorded here rather than in `footnotes`. Parenthesised raised numerals in the "Decision issued" column are footnote references standing in place of a date; transcribed as "(1)", "(2)", "(3)", "(4)". The "(2)" occurrences (A & B Freight; Abinante & Nola; All-States Freight; American Smelting & Refining; Armour & Co. "Do." dated May 31, 1940; Armour & Co. (Bloomer, Wis., plant); Atlas Underwear; Baby Line Furniture; Baltimore Brick; Borg Corporation, George W.; Buckeye Bumper) are the least legible glyphs on the page — the small raised 2 is nearly indistinguishable from a question mark at this scan resolution. "(3)" (Affiliated Dress Manufacturers), "(4)" (Albuquerque & Cerrillos Coal) and "(1)" (American White Cross Laboratory) read more clearly. Ditto marks: the stub and the "Decision issued" column use capitalised "Do."; the "Opened"/"Closed" columns use lower-case "do" set between leader dashes. One exception — the Armour & Co. row with hearing dates Oct. 18, 1939 — appears to print "Do" with no terminal period in the "Decision issued" column, unlike every other ditto in that column. Transcribed as seen; it may be a dropped period rather than a real distinction. Row-label terminal periods: where a label ends in an abbreviation ("Inc", "Co", "Ltd", "W") the abbreviating period is immediately followed by leader dots and the two cannot be separated at this resolution. I have kept the period on such abbreviations per Government Printing Office style and dropped the leaders; labels ending in a full word or ")" carry no period. "Baby Line Furniture Co. and Automatic Tension Screen Co." fills the column width with no leaders, so its final period is unambiguous. "Association of Motion Picture Producers, Inc., and Hal Roach Pictures, Inc." has its hearing-opened date set as "Aug. 21, 193 9" with a typesetting space inside the year; normalised to "Aug. 21, 1939". "Biship Products Co." is transcribed as printed; it is very likely a misprint for "Bishop". "Affiliated Dress Manufacturers, Inc., et al." has a dash rule in the "Closed" column, transcribed as "". Em dashes retained in "Baltimore Mail—United States Line" and "Blue Bell—Globe Mfg. Co.". Multi-line labels (the Association of Motion Picture Producers entries) have been joined into single rows, with the end-of-line hyphenations repaired: "Colum- bia" → "Columbia", "Para- mount" → "Paramount", "Twen- tieth" → "Twentieth", "Univer- sal" → "Universal". The blank band between "Atlas Underwear Co." and "B & B Shoe Co." is an alphabetical spacing break, not a printed row, so no empty row is emitted there.

p. 157. This is a continuation page of an alphabetical case list (letters C through F); the table continues on the following page, and no footnote definitions are printed on this crop. The line "See footnotes at end of table." is printed below the table body and is excluded from `footnotes` because it is a pointer, not a footnote definition. Footnote-reference cells: in the "Decision issued" column several cells contain nothing but a small raised numeral in parentheses, which is the whole printed content of the cell rather than a marker attached to a value. These are transcribed as "(1)", "(2)", "(5)", "(6)". The raised digits are very small at this scan resolution; the many "(2)" readings are the most legible and consistent, but the three "(1)" entries (Endicott-Johnson Corporation "Do." row, Endicott-Johnson (Paracord Division), Endicott-Johnson Corporation (Power)) and the single "(5)" (Firth Carpet Co.) and "(6)" (Flintkote Co.) are the least certain; (5) and (6) in particular could be confused with each other. Ditto cells: in the Hearing "Opened" and "Closed" columns the ditto is printed as "do" flanked by leader dashes; the surrounding dashes are dropped and only "do" is kept. In the stub and the "Decision issued" column the ditto is printed as "Do." and is kept as printed. Doubtful character readings: "Consolidated Paper Co." / Decision issued reads "Mar. 5, 1940" but the digit is slightly broken and could be a 6. "Century Engraving & Embossing Co." / Closed has a stray ink mark after "Apr."; read as "Apr. 18, 1940". "Du Pont Chemical Co." / Closed shows a doubled period after "Aug."; read as "Aug. 4, 1939". "Equitable Life Insurance Co." / Decision issued shows a stray mark before the day; read as "Mar. 2, 1940". Label punctuation: "Columbia Pictures Corporation, et al" and "Consolidated Edison Co. of New York et al" are printed without a closing period (unlike "Columbia Pictures Corporation of California, Ltd., et al."), and "Fenske Bros." is printed with the leaders beginning immediately after "Bros" so the final period is inferred. "Fox-Coffey-Edge Millinery Co." carries 1937 hearing dates (Sept. 30, 1937 / Nov. 16, 1937) with a 1940 decision; this is as printed, not a transcription error. The blank lines separating the C, D, E and F alphabetical groups are typographic spacing only and are not transcribed as rows.

p. 158. This is a continuation page of an alphabetical case list (caption "B. Cases Heard During the Fiscal Year 1939-40 — Continued / Representation cases — Continued", omitted per instructions). Four columns: stub "Name of case", "Hearing: Opened", "Hearing: Closed", "Decision issued". Ditto handling: many cells print "----do----" between leader dots; I transcribed the cell content as "do" (lower case) in the Opened/Closed columns, and "Do." as printed in the Decision issued column. Stub repeats print as "Do" followed immediately by leader dots; I transcribed them as "Do" (any terminal period is indistinguishable from the leaders at this resolution). Footnote-reference cells: the Decision issued column frequently holds only a small parenthesized raised digit, e.g. "(2)". These digits are set very small and are the least certain characters on the page. My readings: "(2)" for General Clay Products Co., The; the three "Do" rows under General Motors Corporation (Delco Products Division); Gettysburg Furniture Co.; Godchaux Sugars, Inc.; the "Do" under Gulf Refining Co; John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co; Leo Hart Co; Hearst Publications, Inc.; Henrietta Cotton Mills; Hettrick Manufacturing Co; Highway Motor Freight Co; Higley Forwarding Co; M. Hoffman & Co; Hummer Mfg. Co.; and International Agricultural Corporation. I read "(6)" for General Electric Co and for Holly Hosiery Mills, "(1)" for Samuel Goldwyn, Inc., Ltd and for Hunt-Spiller Manufacturing Corporation, and "(3)" for the "Do" under John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Co. Any of these single digits could be misread; "(2)" vs "(3)" and "(1)" vs "(6)" are the likeliest confusions. Row 4 (second "Do" under General Electric Co) carries a raised marker after the ditto in both Hearing columns; transcribed as "do^7". The raised digit there is small and could be another numeral. Possible printing oddity, transcribed as printed: "General Motors Corporation (experimental)" has Opened "Jan. 30, 1940" but Closed "do", which would ditto "Mar. 30, 1940" from the preceding (Diesel Division) row, i.e. a closing date earlier than the row's own opening date. Likewise "Hearst Publications, Inc. (Los Angeles Examiner Department)" has Opened "June 10, 1940" with Closed "do". The line "See footnotes at end of table." is printed below the table rule; it is a continuation pointer rather than a numbered footnote, so footnotes is empty — the actual footnote definitions (markers 1, 2, 3, 6, 7) appear on a later page of this table and are not in this crop. Blank spacing separates the "Gu-" / "H-" / "I-" alphabetical groups; those gaps are whitespace, not rows.

p. 159. Four printed columns: stub "Name of case", a spanner "Hearing" over "Opened" and "Closed", and a tall single heading "Decision issued". The crop is a continuation page (caption lines "B. CASES HEARD DURING THE FISCAL YEAR 1939-40—Continued" and "Representation cases—Continued" omitted as instructed); the body is an alphabetical case list, I through M, with blank spacing lines between letter groups but no printed section labels, so no label-only rows were emitted. Footnote references: several cells in the "Decision issued" column contain nothing but a small raised parenthesised numeral in place of a date. Because the marker is the entire cell content (there is no value or label for it to attach to), it is transcribed literally as "(1)", "(2)", "(3)", "(6)" rather than with a caret. In the "International Harvester Co" row the raised numeral is the least legible on the page; I read it as 6, but 5 is possible. The second "Do." row under "Lincoln Engineering Co" reads "(3)" while the rows above and below it read "(2)"; the 3 is slightly broken but 3 is my best reading. Ditto cells: in the Opened and Closed columns the ditto is printed as a lowercase "do" set within a dash leader ("----do----"); the leaders are dropped and the cell is given as "do". In the Decision issued column the ditto is printed centred as "Do." and is given that way. Stub ditto rows are given as "Do.". Trailing periods: every stub label runs into a dash/dot leader rule, so a final abbreviation period (e.g. "Co.", "Inc.", "Bros.", "Ltd.") cannot be distinguished from the first leader character. Trailing periods were therefore dropped from company-name labels; interior periods ("Co., The", "Co., Inc") are printed clearly and are kept. "Do." retains its period, which is unambiguous in the Decision issued column. Doubtful label: "Linderme Tube Co., The" (row between "Lincoln Engineering Co" and "L. B. Lockwood Co") — the fourth and fifth letters are thickened in the scan and could be read "Lindarme"; "Linderme" is my reading. "Lee Rubber & Tire Corporation (Republic Rubber Division)" is printed over two lines, with "sion)" on the second line aligned with the date cells; it is joined into one row label and its dates (May 27, 1940 / May 27, 1940 / June 28, 1940) sit on that second printed line. As printed, "Magnolia Petroleum Co" shows 1938 hearing dates (May 9, 1938 and June 14, 1938) against a Dec. 16, 1939 decision, unlike every other row on the page; transcribed as printed, not corrected. Below the table the line "See footnotes at end of table." is printed and is partly clipped by the bottom of the crop. No footnote texts appear on this page, so `footnotes` is empty.

p. 160. Four columns: stub "Name of case", "Hearing: Opened", "Hearing: Closed", "Decision issued". This is a continuation page (alphabetical case list, M through P); the table runs on before and after the crop, and the footnote texts themselves are not on this page — only the pointer line "See footnotes at end of table.", which I placed in `footnotes`. Ditto marks: in the two Hearing columns the ditto is printed as a lowercase "do" set between leader dots ("----do----"); I transcribed it as `do`. In the Decision issued column the ditto is a standalone "Do." and is transcribed with its period. Stub ditto rows are printed "Do" followed by leader dots, so I cannot tell whether a period is present before the leaders; I wrote `Do` without one. Likewise, most company names run straight into leader dots, so a terminal period on "Co.", "Inc.", "Corp.", "Bros.", "et al." is partly absorbed by the dots; I rendered these with the normal abbreviating period. Blank Hearing-Closed cells: National Dress Manufacturers Association, Inc.; New York & Cuba Mail Steamship Co.; New York & Porto Rico Steamship Co. — each shows only a dash rule, transcribed as "". Doubtful cells, all in the Decision issued column, where the entry is a small parenthesized superscript numeral referring to a footnote. These glyphs are tiny and partly filled-in at this scan resolution, and the readings below are my best but not certain calls: National Battery Co. "(6)" (could be 4 or 5); Pure Oil Co. "(6)" (same shape); Peoria Cordage Co. "(9)" (unusually high number for this table — could be 2 or 3); the "Do" row following Palmer Bee Co. "(3)" and the "Do" row following Pickands-Mather & Co. and Verona Mining Co. "(3)" (each could be "(2)", matching the row above it). The clearer (2), (3) and (5) markers elsewhere in the column I read with more confidence. Park Drug Co.: the "C" of "Co." is broken in the scan and reads visually as "Oo" ("Park Drug Oo"); I transcribed the intended "Co." Ink blots: a large blot sits over the right end of the name column at the "Perry Truck Lines" row, and a smaller one over the Hearing-Opened cell of the "Do" row following Pickands-Mather & Co.; neither obscures a value I could not otherwise read. A stray mark also sits in the Hearing-Opened ditto of the "Do" row under Pacific Gas Heating Co. Blank lines between alphabetical groups (M / Mc / N / O / P) are typographic spacing only, not data rows, so no empty rows were emitted for them.

p. 161. Continuation page of an alphabetical case list; the page carries the section headings "B. CASES HEARD DURING THE FISCAL YEAR 1939-40—Continued" and "Representation cases—Continued" above the column headings (omitted as caption material). Four columns: stub, Hearing Opened, Hearing Closed, Decision issued. "do" in the Hearing columns and "Do." in the stub / Decision issued column are the printed ditto marks; the trailing leader dashes after each "do" were dropped. Footnote markers: the "Decision issued" column holds small parenthesised superscript reference numbers in place of a date for 14 rows. They are set very small and are the least certain cells on the page. My readings, in row order: Republic Creosoting (6); Rio Grande Truck Lines (2); the second "Do." under R. K. O. Radio Pictures (1); the "Do." under Hal Roach Studios (1); Roadway Express (2); Robbins Tire & Rubber (1); H. O. Rondeau Shoe (6); Sager Lock Works (7); Sbicca (7); Schawe-Gerwin Shoe (6); Seeger Refrigerator (1); J. Sklar Manufacturing (2); Solvay Process (2); both John P. Squire rows (2). The 6/8 distinction is especially doubtful for Republic Creosoting, H. O. Rondeau Shoe and Schawe-Gerwin Shoe; 2/3 is doubtful for Rio Grande and Roadway Express. Punctuation transcribed as printed, not normalised: "S. & W. Cafeteria, Inc." / Decision issued reads "Feb. 6. 1940" and "Semet-Solvay Co." / Hearing Opened reads "Mar. 21. 1940" — in both the separator after the day looks like a period rather than the comma used everywhere else. This may be a broken comma in the scan rather than a genuine misprint. Row labels that wrap were joined and end-of-line hyphens repaired: "Republic Creosoting Co. and Reilly Tar & Chemical Corpo-ration", "Saranac Machine Co. & Saranac Automatic Machine Cor-poration", "Sager Lock Works, Barrows Lock Works (division of Yale & Towne)", and the final "John P. Squire Co. and North Packing & Provision Co., Swift & Co., doing business under". Blank vertical gaps appear before "R. C. A. Manufacturing Co." and before "S. & W. Cafeteria, Inc." — these are alphabetical-letter spacing, not printed rows, so no empty rows were emitted. The line "See footnotes at end of table." at the very bottom is clipped by the crop; the footnote texts themselves are not on this page, so `footnotes` is empty.

p. 162. Continuation page of a case list; the column headings ("Name of case" / "Hearing: Opened, Closed" / "Decision issued") are reprinted on this page, so they are given in header_rows. No footnote texts are printed on this crop — the last line below the rule reads "See footnotes at end of table.", which I have not placed in footnotes because it carries no marker and is not itself a footnote. Ditto marks: cells printed as "do" between dash leaders in the Opened/Closed columns are transcribed as "do"; the Decision issued column prints "Do." (capitalised, with period) and is transcribed that way. Stub ditto rows print "Do." followed by leader dots. Footnote-reference cells: several Decision issued cells hold only a parenthesised superscript reference, transcribed as "(1)" or "(2)". The superscript digits are very small and partly broken in the scan; the readings for "Times Mirror Co." (read as (1)) and "Tidewater Timber Co." (read as (2)) are the least certain, and the same caution applies to "Truckowner Freight Co." and "Tennessee Copper Co." (both read as (2)). Uncertain row labels: "Tarbardrey Manufacturing Co." (first letters smudged; could be "Tabardrey"); "Truckowner Freight Co." (possibly "Truckowners"); "Volupte, Inc." (an acute accent on the final e, if present, is not legible); "Utica Knitting Co." (the "i" prints faintly). "et al" is printed without a trailing period in all three rows that use it. Blank vertical gaps separate the S, T, U and V alphabetical groups; these are spacing only and are not transcribed as rows.

p. 163. This is a continuation page of the alphabetical case schedule (letters W-Z); the running heads "B. CASES HEARD DURING THE FISCAL YEAR 1939-40-Continued" and "Representation cases-Continued" are omitted as instructed. Four printed columns: stub plus Hearing (Opened, Closed) and Decision issued. Ditto cells: in the Opened/Closed columns the printed form is lowercase "do" set between leader dashes ("-----do------"); the leaders are dropped and the cell is transcribed as "do". In the Decision issued column the printed form is "Do." with a capital D and a period, transcribed as such. Stub ditto labels are printed "Do." followed by leader dashes. Footnote-reference-only cells: several Decision issued cells carry no date, only a small raised parenthesized numeral standing in place of a value. These are transcribed as printed: (1), (2), (3), (10). Because the whole cell is the reference, no caret form was used; readers should treat them as footnote pointers, not values. Doubtful cells. (a) Wyandotte Transportation Co., Decision issued: the raised numeral reads as 3 but at this scan resolution 2 and 3 are easily confused, and footnote 3 ("Hearing in progress") sits oddly with a hearing recorded as closed Apr. 3, 1940, while footnote 2 ("Awaiting decision") would fit; transcribed as printed, (3). (b) Westinghouse Electric & Mfg. Co., sixth "Do." row (the Mar. 27, 1940 decision), Opened column: printed as "Jan. 25. 1940" with what appears to be a period rather than a comma after the day; transcribed as printed, suspected misprint for "Jan. 25, 1940" - note the Closed cell on the same line reads "Jan. 26, 1940", and the Westinghouse Lamp Division row below has "Jan. 25, 1940 / Jan. 25, 1940". Row-label terminal periods: where a label ends in an abbreviation ("Co.", "Inc.", "Ltd.", "et al.", "Do.") the period runs directly into the leader dashes and cannot be separated visually; it is included per the printed style of this table, which shows the period plainly where a comma follows ("Wadsworth Watch Case Co., The", "Western Consumers Feed Co., Ltd."). Labels ending in a full word (Westchester Apartments, Wilson & Jansen, World Bestos Corporation, Westinghouse Lamp Division, Wells-Lamont Smith Corporation, Wash. Branch Eureka Md. Assurance Corporation, Western Fisheries, a corporation, Western Pipe & Steel Co. of California) carry no terminal period. Extra vertical white space precedes the "Yankee Truck Lines Co." and "L. J. Zerbee & Co." rows (alphabetical letter breaks for Y and Z); these are spacing gaps only, not separate section or total rows, so no label-only rows were inserted. The table carries no totals. Footnotes 4 through 9 are printed under this page but are not referenced by any cell shown here; they belong to the multi-page table and are transcribed in full as printed.
