Reader’s notes

p. 203. The crop contains more than the table: below the footnote the page continues with an "APPENDIX" section (two headed two-column lists of industries in which the Board has taken jurisdiction, and in which it has taken partial or no jurisdiction) and the start of a "SOURCE: U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics..." line that is cut off at the bottom edge. That appendix is running text keyed to footnote 1, not part of Table III, so it is not transcribed in the grid or in footnotes. Structure: the three italic centered lines "1937", "1938" and "1937-38" are section lines with no values; "Percent decrease:" is likewise a label-only line heading the three indented percent rows that follow it. The three "Number of strikes / Number of workers involved / Man-days of idleness" row labels repeat verbatim in each of the three sections. Scan quality: the page is a dark, speckled scan with stray ink flecks in the stub area of the heading, but every digit was legible. Scanner artifacts that I read through: "28,424,S57" is 28,424,857 (broken 8); the italic years print as "19S7"/"19S8" but are 1937/1938. The 1937-38 span in the stub is printed with a short dash, transcribed as a hyphen. The rightmost column's digits sit close to the trimmed right edge and several carry a stray dot after them (e.g. "1,556·", "4,454,100·"); these are flecks, not punctuation or footnote markers, and were dropped. All nine arithmetic relations in the table are internally consistent (column 2 + column 3 = column 1 for each of the six count rows, and each printed percent matches the implied decrease), so no misprint is suspected.
