Reader’s notes

p. 183. Four columns: stub "Name of case", then "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanning head "Date hearing held", then "Date decision issued". The crop is a continuation page of an alphabetical case list; it ends mid-alphabet (last row "East Gulf Stevedoring Co., Inc."), so the table continues on the following page. No numbered footnotes are printed on this page. The only line below the rule is the reference "See footnotes at end of table, p. 179.", which is not itself a footnote, so `footnotes` is empty. In the "Date decision issued" column, four cells contain only a raised numeral inside parentheses, i.e. a footnote reference and not a date: Acme Air Appliance Co. "(1)", Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Bethlehem Steel Co. "(2)", Cudahy Packing Co. "(2)", Eagle Pencil Co. "(3)". I kept the printed parentheses rather than caret notation because the marker is the whole cell, not an attachment to a value; the digit in the Bethlehem Steel and Cudahy cells is blurred and is read as 2 partly from context. Ditto marks: cells printed as leader dots around "do" are given as "do"; the stub and the decision column print the capitalised form "Do.", which is kept as printed. The row "Byco Distributors, Inc." prints lower-case "do" (not "Do.") in the "Date decision issued" column, as transcribed. Doubtful cells, all due to 1-bit scan degradation of the digits 3/8/9: - "Do." (4th Armour & Co. line), Date closed: reads "June 30, 1939"; a 1939 closing date before an Aug. 1938 decision is implausible, but 1939 is what the glyph shows. - "Do." (4th Armour & Co. line), Date decision issued: the final digit of the year is broken and could be read as 3; transcribed "Aug. 29, 1938" since 1933 predates the Board. - "B. F. Sturtevant Co.", Date decision issued: same ambiguity; transcribed "Aug. 6, 1938". - "Coastal Freight Handlers, Inc.", Date opened: reads "June 30, 1939"; the parallel maritime cases on either side open "June 20, 1938", so this is likely a misprint or a damaged glyph, but it is transcribed as it appears. - "Admiar Rubber Co.", "Alfred LeBlanc, Inc." and "Atlantic Gulf Stevedoring, Inc.", Date decision issued: terminal year digits are smudged; read as 1938 in each case. In "Atlantic Gulf Stevedoring, Inc." the comma of "Sept. 29, 1938" prints as a period. Row-label spellings are kept as printed, including apparent typesetting oddities ("Admiar Rubber Co.", "B. G. Hoodley Quarries, Inc.", "Bloedel-Donavan Lumber Mills", "Carl Furst Stove", "Burrel Collins").

p. 184. Four printed columns: the stub \"Name of case\", two columns under the spanner \"Date hearing held\" (\"Date opened\", \"Date closed\"), and a tall single heading for the last column. The table is a continuation (caption line reads \"Representation cases—Continued\"); no numbered footnotes are printed on this page, only the cross-reference line to p. 179, which I placed in footnotes.\n\nHeading: the last column heading prints as \"Date decisio / issued\" — the final \"n\" of \"decision\" is broken or lost at the right trim of the scan. I transcribed it as \"Date decision issued\".\n\nFootnote markers: all raised digits on this page are small and partly filled in, so the exact digit is uncertain. The parenthesized references standing in place of a decision date (Eastern States Petroleum Co., Inc.; Ford Motor Co.; Greer Steel Co.; Merchants Transfer & Storage Co.) all look like the same digit and I read them as 2; Greiss-Pfleger Tanning Co I read as 5 (could be 6); Micamold Radio Corporation I read as 4 (could be 8). The raised digit printed before \"Jan. 1, 1939\" (Empire Furniture Co.) I read as 4, and the one before \"Do.\" (Indiana Railroad and Bowman Elder) as 3 (could be 5); per the instructions both are written after the value with a caret.\n\nDitto cells: \"do\" in the date columns and \"Do.\" in the decision column are as printed (leader dots dropped). Row 16 carries the row label \"Do.\" (ditto of Gates Rubber Co.).\n\nDoubtful stub readings: \"Gulf Ports Service Corporation\" prints with the f's crossbar lost so it reads \"Gull Ports\"; I transcribed \"Gulf\" because the entry sits alphabetically between \"Gulf Pacific Lines, Ltd.\" and \"Gulf Shipping Co.\". \"Monan Stone Co.\" is transcribed as it appears but is likely \"Monon Stone Co.\" (it sits out of strict alphabetical order, after \"Mann Edge Tool Co.\" and before \"Merchants\"). \"Hoodley Bros. Stove Co.\" could be \"Hoadley\". \"Greer Steel Co.\" shows a scan speck over the first e. The Hamburg-American entry uses a short dash before \"North German Line\" that I rendered as a hyphen.\n\nIn the Heltonville Limestone Co. decision cell the comma in \"Dec. 2, 1938\" images as a dot; I transcribed the comma to match every other occurrence of that date. Several values in the right-hand columns carry a stray dot or tick at the right margin from the column rule; these are not transcribed.

p. 185. CROP SCOPE: this is a continuation page of a long alphabetical listing (the running caption reads \"Representation cases—Continued\", omitted per instructions). Entries run from \"Munson Steamship Line\" to \"The Kling Factories\"; rows before and after this alphabetical stretch are on other pages. No numbered footnote texts are printed on this page — only the pointer line \"See footnotes at end of table, p. 179.\", which I placed in `footnotes` even though it carries no marker.\n\nDITTO MARKS: the two date columns use a centred \"do\" flanked by leader dots; I dropped the dots and kept \"do\". The \"Date decision issued\" column uses a capitalised \"Do.\" with no dots, and the stub ditto is \"Do.\". These are reproduced as printed and are not blank cells.\n\nFOOTNOTE-MARKER CELLS: eight cells in the \"Date decision issued\" column carry a parenthesised superscript numeral instead of a date. Because the marker is the whole cell content and the parentheses are printed, I wrote them as (^1), (^2), (^3), (^5) — parentheses as printed, caret flagging the raised digit. The digits are very small at this scan resolution and 2 vs 3 is the main risk: I read \"Niagara Box Factory\" as (^3) and \"Ordway W. Richard\", \"Ourisman Chevrolet Sales Co.\", \"S. B. Penick & Co.\", \"Spotless Stores, Inc.\" and \"Sun Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co.\" as (^2); any of those six could be the other digit. \"New York & Porto Rico Steamship Co.\" Do-row (^1) and \"Padre Vineyard Co.\" (^1) read cleanly, as does \"Pure Oil Co.\" Do-row (^5).\n\nCOMMAS PRINTED AS DOTS: in this worn impression the comma before the year is frequently reduced to a dot, e.g. \"Aug. 13. 1938\" (row \"Do.\" under Standard Oil Co. of N. J.), \"Aug. 17. 1938\" (following \"Do.\"), \"Nov. 1. 1937\" (Stehli & Co., Inc.), \"Sept. 15. 1938\" (Standard Oil Co. of N. J. (marine)), \"June 28. 1938\" and \"June 30. 1938\". The table's uniform style elsewhere is \"Mon. DD, YYYY\", so I transcribed all of these with commas, treating the dot as ink loss rather than a different printed character.\n\nSUSPECTED MISPRINTS / ODDITIES IN THE SOURCE, transcribed as printed:\n- Row \"Standard Oil Co. of N. J. (engineers)\": the \"Date decision issued\" ditto is set in lower case, \"do.\", where every other row in that column uses \"Do.\". Kept as printed.\n- \"Standard Oil Co of N. J. (marine)\" (the later of the two) is printed without the period after \"Co\"; the earlier \"Standard Oil Co. of N. J. (marine)\" has it. Kept as printed. Note also that these two rows carry different dates (June 28/Aug. 4 vs June 6/June 6) despite the near-identical label, and the second duplicates the dates of \"Standard Oil Co. of N. J. (officers)\".\n- The Standard Oil block is out of alphabetical order: \"Standard Cap & Seal Co.\" and \"Standard Fruit & Steamship Co.\" are interleaved between the \"Standard Oil\" entries. Order preserved as printed.\n- \"Stanley Fruit Co.\" follows \"Strachan Shipping Co.\", also out of alphabetical order. Preserved.\n\nDOUBTFUL ROW LABELS (stub column): \"Roberte Bros.\" may be \"Roberts Bros.\"; \"Texle Stevedoring Co.\" is very likely \"Texla Stevedoring Co.\"; \"Sare-Hoadley Stone Co.\" and \"Shelby Shops, Inc.\" are legible but not certain at this resolution. Trailing periods on labels that run straight into the leader dots (\"Page L'Hote Co., Ltd.\", \"Plant Line Stevedoring Co., Inc.\", \"R. C. A. Communications, Inc.\", \"Swayne & Hoyt, Ltd.\") cannot be separated from the first leader dot; I supplied the period that the abbreviation normally takes.\n\nHEADINGS: four columns. \"Date hearing held\" spans the two middle columns and is repeated in both; the stub heading \"Name of case\" and \"Date decision issued\" are tall single headings spanning both heading levels and are repeated in each.

p. 186. Continuation page: the only caption is the sub-caption \"Representation cases—Continued\" (omitted as instructed); the column headings are printed on this page, so they are given. Four printed columns: stub plus \"Date opened\" and \"Date closed\" under the spanner \"Date hearing held\", plus \"Date decision issued\".\n\nDitto entries: cells printed as leader dots around a lowercase \"do\" are transcribed \"do\"; the \"Date decision issued\" column prints its ditto as capitalised \"Do.\" and the stub prints \"Do\", both kept as printed.\n\n\"Washburn Wire Co.\" and \"Weirton Steel Co.\", column \"Date decision issued\": no date is printed, only a small parenthesised footnote reference, which I render \"(1)\" and \"(2)\". The raised glyphs are small and partly broken, so the digits 1 and 2 are inferred from their size/order and from the footnote text under the table.\n\n\"West Kentucky Coal Co.\": the \"Date opened\" and \"Date closed\" cells carry only a dash/leader rule, so both are \"\".\n\n\"Western Vegetable Distributors\", column \"Date decision issued\": printed year reads as \"1918\" — the third digit is damaged/ink-broken. Transcribed as seen; it is almost certainly a misprint or scan artefact for \"1938\" (the row above, with the same hearing dates, reads \"Dec. 7, 1938\").\n\n\"Victor Oohlitic Stone Co.\": transcribed as it appears on the scan; the firm's name is normally printed \"Victor Oolitic Stone Co.\", so the extra letter may be a scan artefact rather than the actual print. Likewise \"Woolery Bros. Stone Co.\" appears with \"Bros.\" on this scan.\n\n\"Union Tribune Publishing\" has no trailing \"Co.\" before its leader dots.\n\nThe spanner reads \"Date hearing held\"; a stray dot sits between \"Date\" and \"hearing\" in the scan and is ignored.\n\nThe right-hand edge of the crop clips the right column rule, and the final character of several \"Date decision issued\" values sits on that edge; all were still legible. The footnote area is cut off at the bottom of the crop: only the top halves of the letters of the first footnote are visible (read as \"Dismissed after hearing\"), its marker and terminal punctuation are inferred, and footnote 2, referenced by the \"Weirton Steel Co.\" row, is not visible on this image at all.
