  1. See footnotes at end of table, p. 168.
  2. 1 Decision issued by stipulation after hearing
Reader’s notes

p. 170. Four columns: stub "Name of case", "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", and "Date decision issued". An italic centred line "Unfair labor practice cases" is printed above the table's top rule and above the column headings; it is the section/caption line for this page rather than a body row, so it is not included in `rows`. The table continues from and onto other pages (no total line, and the footnote reference points to p. 168). Repeat markers: cells printed as "----do----" in the date columns are given as "do"; the stub's repeat label and the decision column's repeat are printed with a capital and a period and are given as "Do.". Cells that hold only a parenthesised raised numeral (a footnote reference standing in place of a date) are written "(^4)" etc. No numbered footnote texts are printed on this page; only the "See footnotes at end of table, p. 168." line. Doubtful cells, all of them tiny raised numerals: - "Alba Twine Mills, Inc." and "American Chain & Cable Co.", Date decision issued: the raised numeral inside the parentheses could be 2 or 3; read as 2. - "American Hawaiian Steamship Co.": a raised numeral precedes the date in both Date opened and Date closed. They appear to differ (3 in Date opened, 2 in Date closed), but since both dates are identical the two markers may well be the same numeral; read as printed and uncertain. - "American West African Lines": a raised numeral precedes the date in both Date opened and Date closed; read as 5 in both, but 3 is possible. - "Aero American Co." and "Boynton & Co.", Date decision issued: a raised 1 (printed after the date in the first, before the date in the second); per convention both are written after the value. - "Calco Chemical Co. (American Cyanamid Co.)", Date decision issued: read as (^5), possibly (^6). Apparent misprints, transcribed as printed: "Boyertoun Burial Casket Co." (Boyertown); "Bussman Mfg. Co." (Bussmann); "B. Boehes-L. E. Rusch" (surname spelling uncertain). The alphabetical order slips at "Andrew Jergens Co. of California", printed before "Anderson Mattress Co."; "American Rolling Mill Co." shows a Date closed of May 27, 1939, later than the other 1938 hearings, but it is printed that way.

p. 171. Continuation page of an alphabetical case list (C through F); the running head "Unfair labor practice cases—Continued" is omitted. Four columns: stub plus "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", plus "Date decision issued". No numbered footnote texts are printed on this page; only the pointer line "See footnotes at end of table, p. 168.", which is given in `footnotes`. Convention used: parenthesized numbers that stand alone as a cell value, e.g. "(4)", are transcribed as printed cell contents (they replace a date); small raised digits attached to a date are given after it behind a caret, even where the printed marker sits before the date (the raised 1 in the decision column is always printed to the left of the month). Doubtful cells, named by row label and column: - "David Strain Manufacturing Co., Inc.", Date opened: reads "Dec. 2, 11937" on the scan. The extra leading 1 may be a stray mark or a footnote marker; the date is presumably Dec. 2, 1937. Transcribed as seen. - "C. G. Lashley, L.^3 & A. Bus Lines" (stub): a small raised glyph, probably a footnote 3, sits after "L." in the middle of the name, which is an unusual position; it may instead be a speck. - "Douglas Aircraft, Inc." second row ("Do."), Date decision issued: printed as a raised parenthesized "(12)" preceding "Do."; transcribed as "Do.^12". - "Consolidated Cigar Corporation", Date decision issued: marker read as "(9)"; could be "(8)". - "Consolidated Dressed Beef Co." and "Easton Made Underwear Co., Inc.", Date decision issued: markers read as "(2)"; could be "(3)". - "Cohn Hall Marx & Subsidiaries", "Davidow Sportswear", "E. J. Robinson-L. E. Rusch", Date decision issued: markers read as "(6)"; "(5)" cannot be fully excluded. - "Eagle and Phenix Mills", Date decision issued: read "Feb. 16, 1939"; the day could be 18. - Proper names degraded by the scan and transcribed as the glyphs appear, though the printed forms are likely the better-known spellings: "Clovis-News-Journal, R. C. Haile's et al." (possibly "R. C. Hoiles"), "F. G. Wogt & Sons, Inc." (possibly "Vogt"), "Fillce & Perrelli Canning Co." (possibly "Filice"), "Cuppler Co. (Match Division)". - Trailing abbreviation periods ("Co.", "Inc.", "Ltd.", "et al.") are supplied where the leader dots make the printed period indistinguishable; "Do." in the stub and in the decision column likewise. - Ditto marks printed as "----do----" in the date columns are given as "do".

p. 172. The page is a continuation: the italic line "Unfair labor practice cases—Continued" above the headings is a —Continued caption and was omitted per instructions; the column headings themselves are printed on this page and are transcribed. No numbered footnote texts are printed on this crop. Below the last body row the page prints only the reference line "See footnotes at end of table, p. 168."; since it carries no marker it is reported here rather than in `footnotes`. Doubtful superscript markers (the scan is a coarse 1-bit halftone and raised digits are only a few pixels tall): - "Glidden Co", Date opened: the raised digit after "Apr. 16, 1938" is read as 8 but could be 3 or 5. - "Grace Line", Date closed: the raised digit after "Aug. 19, 1937" is read as 3 but could be 8. - "Ideal Foundry & Machinery Co", Date decision issued: read as "(16)"; the first character of the parenthetical digit pair is faint and it could be "(10)". - "Lane Cotton Mills Co", Date opened and Date closed: both raised markers read as 19; the one on "Oct. 26, 1937" (Date closed) is blurred and could be 10. Row labels where the scan degraded a character and the reading was taken from context: "Highland Shoe, Inc" (the comma images as a period), "Hilgartner Marble Co" (images as "Hflgartner"), "Howry-Berg, Inc." (images as "Howrv-Berg"), "Interstate Granite Corporation" (images as "Cornoration"). In many labels the terminal "Inc"/"Co" is followed directly by leader dots with no period, and that has been transcribed as printed. Two pairs of rows carry identical hearing dates as printed — "H. T. Heinz Corporation" and "Hunt Bros. Packing Co" (both Apr. 11, 1938 / Sept. 8, 1938) — and are transcribed as shown without correction. The "Do" row following "International Agricultural Corporation" prints "do" (as a dash-flanked ditto) in both date-hearing columns; leader/dash rules were dropped, leaving "do".

p. 173. Four columns: stub "Name of case", then "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", then "Date decision issued"; the stub heading and "Date decision issued" are tall headings spanning both heading levels and are repeated in each. The crop is a continuation page (caption line "Unfair labor practice cases—Continued" omitted), so the case list runs alphabetically from Lewis-Chambers to Pittsburgh Standard Envelope and is cut off at both ends by the page break, not by the crop. Ditto cells: the stub and the "Date decision issued" column print "Do." (capitalised, with period); the two date-hearing columns print lowercase "do" between leader dots — transcribed as "do". Leader dots and dot-leader rules are dropped per instruction. The only footnote content printed under the table is the referral line "See footnotes at end of table, p. 168."; it carries no marker but is included in footnotes since it is printed below the table. The numbered footnotes themselves are on another page. Footnote markers: raised numerals printed immediately BEFORE the date in the "Date decision issued" column have been moved behind a caret after the date — rows Lipscomb Seed & Grain Co. (Nov. 23, 1938^1), Midwest Metal Stamping Co. (July 26, 1938^1), Moline Iron Works (Nov. 7, 1938^1), Ohio Power Co. (Apr. 3, 1939^1), Padre Vineyard Co. (Mar. 14, 1939^1), Pennsylvania Furnace & Iron Co. (June 3, 1939^1). Raised markers printed after a date are kept in place: Mackay Radio Corporation of Del. (^20 on both hearing dates), Matson Navigation Co. and McCormick, S. S., Co. (^3 on both hearing dates). Raised parenthesised numerals — (2), (4), (6), (7), (16) — stand alone as the whole content of the "Date decision issued" cell (i.e. in place of a date, referring to a numbered footnote), so they are transcribed as the cell value rather than as attached markers. Doubtful cells: (a) Pittsburgh Standard Envelope Co., "Date decision issued" — a small dark ink mark sits just left of "(4)" at the column rule; it may be a stray scan artifact or a raised footnote marker, and is not transcribed. (b) Newton Carton Co., Inc., "Date decision issued" — read as (16); the raised two-digit numeral is small and could conceivably be (15) or (10). (c) Mackay Radio Corporation of Del. — the raised marker on both hearing dates is read as 20 but is partly broken in the scan. Punctuation: in this scan many of the commas inside dates print like periods (e.g. "May 26. 1938" for Mason Mfg. Co., "Dec. 9. 1937" for Mountain Motors Co., "June 29. 1938" for Ohio Brass Co. and Okey Hosiery Co., "June 30. 1938" for New York Handkerchief Co.); all have been transcribed as commas, matching the table's uniform style. Spellings kept as printed even where the modern/standard form differs: "L. Grief & Bros., Inc." (Greif), "Luckenback Steamship Co., Inc." (Luckenbach). "Libby, McNeill & Libby" shows a hyphen-like artifact after "McNeill" in the scan, read as a broken comma/stray mark and not transcribed. Two-line row labels joined into one row: "N. Y. Butchers Dressed Meat Co. (division of Armour & Co.)" — the three date values are printed on its second line and belong to this single row.

p. 174. Continuation page of an alphabetical case list (caption "Unfair labor practice cases—Continued" omitted per instructions); the table runs alphabetically from "Planters Manufacturing Co." to "Titmus Optical Co." and continues on the next page. Four columns: stub plus a two-column "Date hearing held" spanner and "Date decision issued". No footnote texts are printed on this page; instead the line "See footnotes at end of table, p. 168." appears below the rule. It is a pointer rather than a numbered footnote, so `footnotes` is empty. Ditto entries: where a date cell is printed as leader dots around "do" I transcribed the cell as "do"; where the stub repeats as "Do." I kept "Do.". The "Date decision issued" cell of the row after "Seymour Woolen Mills" is printed as a superior 1 followed by "Do.", transcribed "Do.^1". Doubtful cells (the superior footnote references are small and partly broken in this 1-bit scan): - Two-digit superior markers are the least certain characters on the page. Read as 21 (Plylock Corporation, decision; Singer Sewing Machine Co., date closed), 22 (Republic Steel Co., decision; Southwestern Greyhound Lines, both date columns and decision) and 24 (Spotless Stores, both date columns); any of these could instead be an adjacent number in the low 20s. - Single-digit parenthesized references: "Raleigh Hotel Co." and "The Call Printing & Publishing Co." (decision column) read as "(7)" but could be "(2)"; "S. H. Penick Drug Co." and "Spotless Stores, Inc" read as "(5)" but could be "(6)"; "Robert H. Foerderer" read as "(16)" but could be "(10)"; the two "T. A. Allen Construction Co." rows read as "(15)". - "Republic Steel Co.", decision: the day digit is ambiguous between 18 and 19; transcribed "Oct. 18, 1938". - "Planters Manufacturing Co.", decision: the separator after the day looks like a period rather than a comma ("Dec. 20. 1938"); transcribed with a comma as the evident intent. - "Shellabarger Grain Produce (Spencer Kellogg & Sons, N.Y.)", decision: read "July 18, 1939"; the year could be 1938, which would match the several other "July 18, 1938" entries nearby. - "Richmond-Chase Co" has no entry in the decision column (left blank on the page, not a dash). Several stub labels are printed without a closing period ("Revolution Cotton Mills Co", "Richmond-Chase Co", "Scobey Fireproof Storage Co", "Spotless Stores, Inc", "Stockton Food Products, Inc. et al"); the leader dots make a final period hard to separate, so they are transcribed as read.

p. 175. Continuation page of a case-by-case listing; the only heading band printed is the two-level one transcribed above ("Date hearing held" spanning "Date opened" and "Date closed"). The caption line "Unfair labor practice cases—Continued" was omitted as instructed. Ditto conventions: the stub repeat is printed as "Do" followed by leader dots (transcribed "Do." to match the "Do." printed in the last column); within the date columns the ditto is printed in lower case between dash rules and is transcribed "do". Doubtful cells: - "Do." row under "Virginia Ferries Co." (row 26): the "Date closed" cell looks empty at this resolution while "Date opened" clearly carries "do". Given the pattern of every other ditto row, this cell may well also hold "do" and be a faint/broken impression; transcribed as "" because nothing is legible there. - "Ward Baking Co.": a raised two-digit marker is printed BEFORE the value in both "Date closed" ("Oct. 12, 1937") and "Date decision issued" ("July 23, 1938"); moved behind a caret per instruction. The glyph reads 25 but 26 cannot be ruled out at this resolution. - "West Oregon Lumber Co.": the raised two-digit marker follows each date ("May26, 1938" and "June30, 1938"), read as 26; same 25/26 ambiguity. The printed dates are set tight ("May26," / "June30,") with no space after the month; a normal space was restored. - "Western Union Telegraph Co.": a raised 1 is printed before "June 18, 1938"; moved behind a caret. - "Union Stock Yards Co." prints as "Unton Stock Yards Co." — a broken "i" in the scan, transcribed as "Union". Values in the last column that consist only of a raised parenthesized numeral — (2), (4), (7), (11) — are footnote references standing in place of a date; transcribed as printed, with no caret since there is no value they attach to. Apparent misprint, transcribed as printed: "Wisconsin Bell Telephone Co." shows "Date opened" Feb. 27, 1938 but "Date closed" Feb. 22, 1938, i.e. the hearing closes before it opens. "West Oregon Lumber Co." has no entry in "Date decision issued" (genuinely blank, not cut off). Crop: the footnote block is cut by the bottom edge of the image — only footnote 1 is present and the lower halves of its letters are clipped; its terminal punctuation is not visible, and any further footnotes (including the texts for markers 2, 4, 7, 11, 25, 26) fall below the crop.
