Reader’s notes

p. 57. Seven columns: stub, "Number of cases", two percentage columns under the first "Percentage of—" spanner, "Number of workers involved", and two percentage columns under the second "Percentage of—" spanner. "Number of cases" and "Number of workers involved" are tall single headings spanning both heading levels, so they are repeated in both; the stub has no printed heading. Cell contents and doubtful readings: - "(a) Consent election" under "By settlement after hearing:", last column ("Total number of workers involved in cases on docket"): the cell holds a parenthesized raised 1, i.e. the footnote reference standing in for a value (footnote 1: "Less than 0.05 percent."). Transcribed as "(1)". - Rows whose cells hold only dash/leader rules are given as empty strings: "(c) Pay-roll check" under "By settlement before hearing:", "(b) Recognition of representatives" under "By settlement after hearing:", "By dismissal before hearing", and "By dismissal after hearing". Likewise the leader-dot rules in the "Total cases closed" / "Total number of workers involved in cases closed" columns of the two pending/received rows and the docket total, and in the two "on docket" percentage columns of the "Total cases closed July 1, 1938, to June 30, 1939" row. - "Total cases closed July 1, 1938, to June 30, 1939", "Number of cases": two stray ink marks precede the figure in the scan ("-- 335"); the printed value is 335. - "By dismissal of petition by Board after election", "Total cases closed": printed 4.2, with a scan speck between the digits that makes it look like "4: 2". - Heading of the last column is degraded in the scan ("rumber"); read as "Total number of workers involved in cases on docket" to match the parallel column to its left. - Scattered stray specks appear in the left margin and in the "Cases closed after formal action" block; none alter a transcribed value. All printed totals and percentage columns check out arithmetically (cases 249 + 86 = 335; workers 87,676 + 18,975 = 106,651; 561 − 335 = 226; 228,288 − 106,651 = 121,637; each percentage column sums to 100.0), so no misprints are suspected.
