Reader’s notes

p. 33. Seven printed columns: stub, "Number of cases", two percentage columns under the first "Percentage of—" spanner, "Number of workers involved", and two percentage columns under the second "Percentage of—" spanner. The stub has no printed heading, so cell 0 of both heading levels is empty; "Number of cases" and "Number of workers involved" are tall single headings and are repeated across both levels. Cells shown with dash rules (e.g. the "Total cases closed" percentage column for the pending/received/docket rows, and the "Total cases on docket" percentage columns for the "Total cases closed July 1, 1938 to June 30, 1939" row) are transcribed as "". The four rows with no values at all ("By dismissal before hearing", "By dismissal after hearing", "By intermediate report finding no violation", "By compliance with intermediate report") carry dash rules across all six value columns in the original. Percentages under 1 are printed without a leading zero (".8", ".5", ".2", ".1", ".9", ".4") and are transcribed as printed. "By settlement after hearing" shows 23 cases but only 271 workers involved, far fewer than the 736 workers for the 4 cases settled before hearing. This looks anomalous but it is what is printed, and it is internally consistent: the seven "closed after formal action" workers figures sum to the printed 19,550, and all other printed totals check out (417+109=526; 118,407+19,550=137,957; 358+489=847; 526+321=847; 122,259+216,712=338,971; 137,957+201,014=338,971). Three row labels wrap in the original and have been joined with their end-of-line hyphens repaired: "Total cases closed before formal ac-tion", "By intermediate report finding no vio-lation", and "By compliance with intermediate re-port". A faint partial line of type is visible below the table's bottom rule at the very edge of the crop; it is cut off and illegible, so it is not transcribed. It may be a footnote or the caption of the following table.
