Reader’s notes

p. 279. Four printed columns: stub "Name of case", then "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", then the tall heading "Date deci-sion issued" (joined to "Date decision issued"). Ditto cells: in the two hearing-date columns the ditto is printed as a lowercase "do" set between dash leaders ("-----do------"); I dropped the leaders and kept "do". In the decision column the ditto is printed "Do." and is transcribed that way, as are the "Do." stub labels. "(1)" and "(2)" are parenthesized superscript footnote references standing alone as the entire content of a cell (not attached to any value), so they are written as printed rather than with a caret. Every row whose "Date closed" cell is "(2)" has a blank "Date decision issued" cell; those blanks are genuinely empty on the page (no dash rule). Doubtful cells: the stub label in row 4, read here as "Admlar Rubber Co.", is indistinct in this scan and is most likely "Admiral Rubber Co."; row 3 "Acme Scaling Co., Inc." could be "Acme Sealing Co., Inc."; row 23 "American Baltic Chartering & Ship" appears truncated in the original but is transcribed as printed. Print defects that are not data: an ink blot sits just right of "Mar. 14, 1938" in the "Date closed" cell of "American Radiator Co. (Bond Plant)"; a stray tick precedes "Mar. 15, 1938" in the third "Do." row under Armour & Co. and precedes "31" in "Jan. 31, 1938" for Arma Engineering Co. The table is an alphabetical case list that runs past this page (it ends mid-alphabet at "Armour & Co."); the caption, running head and the page number partly visible at the foot of the crop are omitted.

p. 280. Continuation page of an alphabetical case list; the running head "Representation cases—Continued" is omitted per instructions. Four columns: stub, two under the spanner "Date hearing held", and the tall heading "Date decision issued". Ditto conventions: cells printed as "-----do------" are transcribed as "do"; the word "Do." in the stub and in the decision column is transcribed as printed. Footnote references that stand alone as the entire cell value (raised numerals in parentheses) are transcribed as "(1)", "(2)", "(3)", "(4)" rather than caret-attached markers, since no value accompanies them. Suspected misprints, transcribed as printed: - "Armour & Co. (Brooks Ave. Market)", Date opened: reads "Nov. 22, 2937"; the leading digit is clearly not a 1 in the scan, but 1937 is almost certainly intended (the surrounding ditto rows are Nov. 17, 1937). - "Brown Shoe Co.", Date opened: reads "Nov. 29, 1938", yet the hearing closes Jan. 24, 1938 and the decision issues Feb. 11, 1938, so 1937 is almost certainly intended. Doubtful characters: - "Baker, Whitley Co.", Date decision issued: the separator after the day prints as a period ("Dec. 3. 1937"); transcribed with a comma to match every other date in the column. - "Binnings, E. S.": the terminal period of the initial merges with the leader dots, so whether it is printed cannot be resolved; transcribed with the period. The rows "Bethlehem Steel Corporation & Bethlehem Steel Co." and "Bendix Prod. Corp." are printed out of alphabetical sequence; kept in printed order. The three rows carrying footnote 3 in the Date closed column have a genuinely blank Date decision issued cell.

p. 281. This is a continuation page of an alphabetical case list ("Representation cases—Continued"); the table runs on from the preceding page and continues after this crop (it ends mid-alphabet at "Donaldson Towing & Lighterage Co."). Ditto marks: cells printed as "-----do-------" in the date columns are given as "do"; cells printed as "Do." in the "Date decision issued" column are given as "Do.". Row labels printed as "Do." are kept as "Do.". The parenthesised numerals are footnote references printed in place of a date, so they are transcribed in their cell as printed, e.g. "(1)" for cases awaiting Board decision. Doubtful cells: the small parenthesised digits in the "Date closed" column for Coastal Freight Handlers, Inc.; Connor Lumber & Land Co.; Cunard White Star Lines; Delta Line; and Donaldson Atlantic Line are blurred in this scan and the digit is hard to resolve (2 vs. 3). All five are hearings opened in June 1938 with no closing date, which matches footnote 3 ("Hearing still in progress"), so all five are transcribed as "(3)"; a couple of them could conceivably read "(2)". For those same five rows the "Date decision issued" cell is blank in the original. Other minor scan artefacts: stray specks appear near the labels "Central Truck Lines, Inc.", "Chesapeake Lighterage Co.", "Coastal Freight Handlers, Inc.", "Continental Oil Co." and "Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. / Do.", and just left of the "(4)" for Cosmolite Corporation; none of these alter the text. The footnote markers under the table are broken/ill-formed in the scan but are unambiguously the sequence 1–5 given their order.

p. 282. Continuation page ("Representation cases—Continued"); the column headings are printed on this page, so they are given. Four columns: stub, Date opened, Date closed (both under the spanner "Date hearing held"), Date decision issued. Footnote numbering is the main uncertainty. Seven footnote lines are printed; I read their raised markers as 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 — i.e. no footnote 5 is printed, yet two body cells (Foote Bros. Gear & Machine Corporation and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. of California, Date decision issued) carry what reads as a raised 5, and nothing on the page plainly references 8. The raised digits on footnote line 5 and in the Erwin "Do." row are blotted at this resolution and could be 5 rather than 6; if so the whole tail of the list shifts by one and the Foote/Goodyear marker is more likely 8 ("Dismissed before decision of Board was issued", which fits those two cases semantically). Markers are transcribed exactly as I read them rather than renumbered. Marker placement checks: in "East Gulf Stevedoring Co.", "Ford Motor Co." (2nd Do.), "French Line" and "George H. Kent & Sons, Inc." the "(3)" ("Hearing still in progress") is placed in the Date closed column and the Date decision issued cell is blank; in the first three of those the marker is printed toward the left of that column, close to the rule, but it cannot belong to Date opened, which already holds a date. "Eagle Phenix Mills", Date decision issued: a small raised mark is printed immediately before "18" ("Jan. ˙18, 1938"). It may be a footnote marker or a stray speck; I read it as a speck and transcribed the date plainly. "General Electric Co.", Date closed: a small stray mark precedes "Aug. 27, 1937"; transcribed without it. "General Motor Corporation" appears to be printed without the "s" — likely a misprint for "General Motors Corporation", since the following row is "General Motors Corporation (Fisher Body, Oakland Div.)" and carries "do" for both hearing dates. Transcribed as printed. "Gaffney Manufacturing Co." and "Garfield Machine Works, Inc." decision markers are blotted; read as (2) ("Settled before decision of Board was issued"), which is consistent with both rows having opened and closed hearing dates — (3) would contradict that. Ditto cells in the two date columns are printed as lowercase "do" flanked by dash leaders and are transcribed "do"; the decision column prints "Do." and is transcribed as such. Row labels' trailing leader dots are dropped; trailing periods on abbreviations such as "Co." are given where the abbreviation runs into the leaders. The "General Steel Castings Corporation (Commonwealth Division)" label wraps over two printed lines ("Commonwealth Divi- / sion)") and has been joined, with its values taken from the second line.

p. 283. Continuation page of an alphabetical case listing (caption line "Representation cases—Continued" omitted as instructed); the table runs off the bottom of the crop and continues on the next page. Footnote references: throughout this table a raised parenthesised numeral is the entire content of the cell rather than a marker attached to a value, so it is transcribed literally as (1), (2), (3), (4). A (3) "Hearing still in progress" always sits in the "Date closed" column (the "Date decision issued" cell on those rows is blank); a (1), (2) or (4) always sits in the "Date decision issued" column. Ditto cells: the fourth "Do." row under Hillcone Steamship Co. prints "do" (between leader dots) in both date columns and "Do." in the decision column; Indiana Limestone Corporation likewise prints "do" in both date columns. Leader dots around these have been dropped. Suspected misprints, transcribed as printed: - "Hat Corporation of America": Date opened reads "Sept. 8, 1938" while Date closed reads "Sept. 8, 1937" and the decision issued "Oct. 27, 1937"; the opened year is almost certainly meant to be 1937. - "International Harvester Co. (operator of Wisconsin Steel Mines)": Date opened "July 12, 1937", Date closed "July 12, 1938"; the closed year is likely meant to be 1937. Doubtful/stray marks: a small speck follows "Oct. 15, 1937" in the Date decision issued cell of "Great Lakes Engineering Corporation", and a similar tick follows the (1) for "Interstate Granite Corporation"; both look like scanning artefacts rather than footnote markers (only markers 1–4 are defined) and have been omitted. Isolated specks also appear in the stub of "Hoadley Bros. Stone Co." and "Horton Manufacturing Co." and to the right of the (1) for "Hunter Bros. Stone Co.", and are likewise ignored. "Horace G. Prettyman and Arthur J. Wiltse" prints as "Wlltse" in the scan; read as "Wiltse". Two rows labelled "Isthmian Steamship Co." appear consecutively (not a "Do." pair) and are kept as printed.

p. 284. Continuation page: the only line above the column headings is the running section line "Representation cases—Continued", which is omitted per instructions. Three columns of data plus the stub; "Date hearing held" spans "Date opened" and "Date closed". Footnote references stand alone in a cell as a raised digit inside parentheses; they are transcribed as (^1), (^2), etc., keeping the printed parentheses. Five rows (Journal American; Luckenbach Gulf Steamship Co., Inc.; Lykes Bros. Ripley Steamship Co.; Metropolitan Stevedoring Co., Inc.; Mississippi Shipping Co., Inc.) print a single (^3) marker, set in the "Date closed" column, with nothing in "Date decision issued"; I placed it under "Date closed" and left the decision cell empty. It is conceivable the printer intended it to cover both remaining columns. Ditto cells printed as "____do____" between leader dashes are transcribed as "do"; the stub's ditto rows are printed "Do." and the decision column's ditto is printed "Do." Doubtful cells: the "Date decision issued" cells for "McKesson & Robbins, Inc." and the "Do." row immediately below it are inked heavily and the raised digit is hard to resolve; I read both as (^5) (footnote 5 is the only reading consistent with the footnote list beyond 1-4, but 2 is not impossible). Doubtful labels (transcribed exactly as printed): "Lukenheimer Co." (likely a misprint for "Lunkenheimer Co."); "Mid-States Gumner Paper Co." (likely a misprint for "Gummed"); "Malston Co., Inc." — the second letter is smudged and could be another character. The row "Johns Manville Products Corporation" is printed without the hyphen that "Johns-Manville Corporation" three rows above carries; both are transcribed as printed.

p. 285. This is a continuation page of an alphabetical case list (running head "Representation cases—Continued", omitted as instructed); the table continues before and after this crop. Four printed columns: stub, and under the spanner "Date hearing held" the columns "Date opened" and "Date closed", plus "Date decision issued". The footnote references are printed as very small parenthesized superscripts and are the least reliable part of this transcription; at the available resolution the digits 2/3/5/9 are hard to separate. Specific doubtful cells: - "Mooremack Gulf Lines, Inc." (Date closed): the glyph reads more like 5 or 9 than 3, but 3 ("Hearing still in progress") is the only reading consistent with a hearing opened June 30, 1938 and with the identical marker on the other June 1938 shipping cases; transcribed (3). - "Munson Steamship Lines" (Date decision issued): read as (1) on one pass and (3) on another; 3 is impossible there (the hearing opened and closed Sept. 20, 1937), so (2) "Settled before decision" was chosen. It could be (1). - "New York Evening Journal, Inc." (Date decision issued): the glyph reads like 9; 5 is the only plausible marker (footnote 5, "Additional hearing held June 22 to July 1, 1938", explains the missing decision), so (5) was entered. - The whole block of cases opened June 20/24, 1938 (Munson Steamship Line, Murray Shipping Co., New Orleans Steamship Association, New Orleans Stevedoring Co., New York & Porto Rico Steamship Co., Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line, Norton Lilly & Co., Oceanic Stevedoring Co. of Louisiana, Page L'Hote Co., Pan-Atlantic Steamship Corporation) carries the same marker in the Date closed column; individual passes read it variously as 2, 3, 4 or 8, and all were transcribed (3). Other points: - In rows where the only entry after the opening date is a footnote marker, that marker sits in the "Date closed" column and the "Date decision issued" cell is blank; those rows are transcribed accordingly. - Ditto entries are printed as lower-case "do" with leader dots in the date columns and as "Do." in the stub and in the decision column; kept as printed. - "New York Mail & Newspaper Transporation Co." appears to be printed with the misspelling "Transporation" (for "Transportation"); transcribed as printed, but the missing "t" could be a scan artifact. - The last row, "Paragon Rubber Co., Inc., & American Character Doll Co., Inc.", has its Date closed printed as "Jan. 18 1938" without the comma; transcribed as printed. Its label wraps onto two printed lines and has been joined. - Footnote 5 is printed without a closing period. - A few stray printer's marks appear in the margins/columns (e.g. a dot left of the "(1)" in the third "Do." row under Missouri, Kansas & Oklahoma Coach Lines, and right of the Niagara Box Factory and Panama Mail rows); these are not transcribed as content.

p. 286. Continuation page of an alphabetical case list ("Representation cases—Continued"); the section caption line was omitted per instructions. Four columns: stub, Date opened, Date closed, Date decision issued, with "Date hearing held" spanning the two middle columns. Ditto entries: cells printed as "----do------" in the two date-hearing columns are transcribed "do."; the decision column prints a capitalized "Do." The stub ditto label is "Do." Footnote references standing alone in a cell are printed as small parenthesized raised numerals, (1), (2), (3); they are transcribed as "(1)", "(2)", "(3)" because they occupy the whole cell rather than attaching to a value. On the four Postal Telegraph-Cable rows the raised "10" is printed before "Do." and has been moved behind a caret ("Do.^10"). Doubtful/irregular cells: - Pennsylvania Shipyards Inc., Date opened: printed with a stray comma after the month abbreviation, "Nov., 4, 1937"; transcribed as printed (apparent misprint). - Pocahontas Steamship Co., Date decision issued: the period after "Sept" does not appear in the scan ("Sept 17, 1937"), unlike every other "Sept." in the column; transcribed as seen, but it may simply be a dropped period. - Richard Meyer Co., Ross & Heyn, Inc. and Ryan Stevedoring Co. have an empty Date decision issued cell (hearing still in progress, footnote 3 in Date closed); these are genuinely blank, not leader dots. - A few decision-column cells (Pilot Radio Corporation, Ritz Distributing Co.) carry a small stray ink dot to the left of the "(1)"; treated as scan noise, not a marker. - Plant Line Stevedoring Co., Inc. carries both "(3)" (hearing still in progress) in Date closed and "(1)" in the decision column, which is internally odd but is what is printed. The four footnotes are printed in two blocks under the table (1-3 at left, 10 at right); they are listed here in marker order.

p. 287. Four printed columns: stub "Name of case", a two-column spanner "Date hearing held" split into "Date opened" and "Date closed", and a tall single heading "Date decision issued". The page opens with the continuation caption "Representation cases—Continued", which is omitted per instructions; this crop is a continuation page of an alphabetical case list (S entries only), so no total or section rows appear. Ditto marks: cells printed as "----do------" are transcribed as "do"; stub labels printed as "Do." are kept as "Do.". Parenthesized reference numbers that stand alone as a cell value (e.g. "(1)", "(3)") are transcribed as the cell content rather than as caret footnote markers, since they are the only thing printed in the cell and they point to the status footnotes 1-5 below the table. Doubtful cells: - The parenthesized digits are the weakest part of this scan; 3, 5 and 8 are hard to separate at this resolution. Marks sitting in the "Date closed" column (Scandinavian-American Line, Southern Stevedoring Co., Standard Fruit & Steamship Co., the "Do." after Standard Oil Co. of N. J. (Marine Department), Standard Oil Co. of N. J. June 28 1938, Strachan Shipping Co., Swayne & Hoyt Ltd.) are read as "(3)" ("Hearing still in progress"), which is the only footnote that fits a hearing with no closing date. - The two "Do." rows under Southgate Nelson Corporation carry marks in the "Date decision issued" column that I read as "(5)"; the first of the two is particularly smudged and could conceivably be "(3)" or "(2)". - "Southern Stevedoring Co." appears to carry two marks, "(3)" under Date closed and "(1)" under Date decision issued. The other June 20, 1938 maritime entries on this page leave the decision column blank, so the "(1)" here is worth re-checking. - "Shell Oil Co.", Date opened: the year reads as a broken "1937"; the third digit is filled in and could be misread as "1927". Transcribed as 1937 on the basis of the Dec. 23, 1937 closing date in the same row. - "Shelby Shops, Inc.", Date decision issued: a small stray ink speck sits to the left of the "(1)"; treated as a printing artifact and not transcribed. - Row-label spellings that are plausible but not fully legible: "Sare-Hoadley Stone Co." (row 2), "Seiss Mfg. Co." (row 12), "Stephen Ranson, Inc." (row 63). Possible misprint, transcribed as printed: the "Do." row under "Simplex Wire & Cable Co." shows a ditto opening date (Nov. 1, 1937) with a closing date of Nov. 1, 1937 while the parent row closes Nov. 6, 1937; the closing date is earlier than the parent's, which may be a typesetting error but is reproduced as shown.

p. 288. Four columns: stub "Name of case", the two-column spanner "Date hearing held" (Date opened / Date closed), and the tall single heading "Date decision issued". The page continues an alphabetical case list from the preceding page; the line "Representation cases—Continued" above the rules is a section/caption line and is omitted per instructions, as are the footnote-rule area labels. The list ends mid-alphabet ("Union Oil Co. of California" / "Do"), so the table continues on the following page. Parenthesized raised digits that stand alone in a cell are footnote references and are transcribed as the cell's whole content, e.g. "(1)". Doubtful cells: (a) the raised digit in the "Date closed" column for "Do" (under Tampa Inter-Ocean Steamship Co.), "Texla Stevedoring Co.", "Texas Transport & Terminal Co." and "T. Smith & Son, Inc." is too coarse at this scan resolution to separate a raised 2 from a raised 3; I read all four as (3), since footnote 3 ("Hearing still in progress") is the only one that fits a missing closing date, but 2 cannot be ruled out from the glyph alone. (b) "Tampa Inter-Ocean Steamship Co.", Date decision issued: the marker is a thick blob; read as (5) ("Dismissed before decision of Board was issued"); could conceivably be (3) or (6, nonexistent). Suspected misprint: "The Falk Corporation", Date decision issued reads "Apr. 18, 1937" as printed, although the hearing closed Aug. 25, 1937 and the report covers fiscal 1938 — almost certainly should be 1938. Transcribed as printed, not corrected. Rows 48 and 57 are printed with different company spellings — "Tidewater Associated Oil Co." and "Tidewater Association Oil Co."; both kept as printed. The trailing digits in "The Ohio Foundry Co., plant 1" and "The Ohio Foundry Co., plants 1, 2, and 3" are plant numbers belonging to the label, not footnote markers. Lowercase "do" in the two date columns and "Do."/"Do" in the decision column and stub are the printed ditto marks; their trailing leader dots have been dropped. Blank cells (including the Date decision issued cells of the four "hearing still in progress" rows) are "". Footnotes are set in two columns beneath the table: 1–3 at left, 4–5 at right; they are listed here in numeric order.

p. 289. Continuation page (the head "Representation cases--Continued" is omitted per instructions); no table caption or page number is transcribed. The table is a single panel of four columns. Footnote references standing alone in a data cell are printed as a small raised numeral inside full-size parentheses and are transcribed exactly as printed, e.g. "(1)", since there is no value for them to attach to. These occur in "Date decision issued" for most rows and in "Date closed" for four rows (United Fruit Co. "Do.", Vogemann-Goudriaan, Waterman Steamship, Weirton Steel), whose "Date decision issued" cells are blank. Doubtful cells: the raised numeral for Vogemann-Goudriaan Co., Inc. in "Date closed" reads as 2 to me, but 3 ("Hearing still in progress") is the marker used in the three comparable rows with an open-but-unclosed hearing, so it could be (3). The markers read as (4) for Union Stockyard Co. of Fargo and U. S. Coal & Coke Co. ("Date decision issued") are small and could conceivably be (1); in the footnote block the markers for footnotes 3 and 4 are likewise blurred (the 3 resembles an 8), but the four footnote texts are legible and standard. Ditto marks: in the stub they are printed "Do." and are kept as such; in the date columns they are printed as lower-case "do" set between leader dashes, transcribed as "do" with the dashes dropped; in "Date decision issued" the ditto is printed "Do." and kept as such. "Walt Disney Productions, Ltd" is immediately followed by leader dots, so I could not tell whether a period is printed after "Ltd"; I wrote "Ltd." The same ambiguity applies to "et al." in the two Waggoner/Walker rows. As printed, the list contains what appear to be duplicate entries: "Wisconsin Bell Telephone" (Feb. 7, 1938 / Feb. 22, 1938 / (1)) and, two rows later, "Wisconsin Bell Telephone Co." with identical values; also "United Carbon Co." precedes "Unit Cast Corporation", out of strict alphabetical order. Both are transcribed as printed. Two row labels wrap onto a second printed line and have been joined with the end-of-line hyphen repaired: "Utah Copper Co., a corporation, & Kennecott Copper Cor-/poration" and "Vultee Aircraft Division, Aviation Manufacturing Corpora-/tion". For the Vultee row there is a small stray mark left of the "(1)" in the decision column, apparently a printing artifact rather than a character.
