Reader’s notes

p. 277. Four columns: stub (Name of case), then two columns under the spanning heading "Date hearing held" (Date opened / Date closed), then the tall single heading "Date decision issued". The italic centred line "Representation cases" printed above the table rules is treated as part of the caption and omitted, as is the clipped line of running text ("year 1938.") at the very top of the crop and the partially visible page number at the bottom. Ditto marks: in the two hearing-date columns the repeat mark is printed as "do" flanked by leader dashes ("----do-----"); it is transcribed as "do". In the decision column the repeat is printed as "Do." and is transcribed as printed. Cells printed as a small parenthesised raised numeral — (1) for American-Hawaiian S. S. Co., (2) for Electric Vacuum Cleaner Co., (3) for Honolulu Stevedores, Inc., (4) for Memphis Furniture Manufacturing — are the entire cell content (a cross-reference to the correspondingly numbered footnote), not a marker attached to a value, so they are given as "(1)" … "(4)". Doubtful readings: the row label "Memphis Furniture Manufacturing" ends with a period-like mark immediately before the leader dots, so a trailing "Co." may have been set and is either absent or lost in the scan; "Mascott Shoe Co., Inc." could be "Mascot"; "Lumbard Shoe Co." could be "Lombard" — the scan shows "Lumbard". "American Scantic Line" and "American S. S. Co." print with speckled initial letters ("Amerlcan"/"Afnerican") but the wording is clear from context. The list is alphabetical and stops mid-alphabet at "Newtex S. S. Corporation", so this table continues on the following page; no total row is present on this crop.

p. 278. The crop is a continuation page: above the box it carries only the sub-caption line \"Representation cases—Continued\", which I have left out as a —Continued line; the column headings themselves are printed on this page and are transcribed.\n\nDitto marks: in the two date-of-hearing columns the repeat is set as lowercase \"do\" between leader rules (\"-----do-------\"); I render it as \"do\" with the leaders dropped. In the \"Date decision issued\" column the repeat is set as a centered, capitalised \"Do.\" and is rendered that way. The two indented stub entries after \"The Globe Machine & Stamping Co.\" are printed \"Do.\" (same company, further cases) and are kept as separate rows.\n\nFootnote-reference cells: for Newton Packing Co., Tennessee Products Corporation and Ward Furniture Manufacturing Co. the \"Date decision issued\" cell carries no date, only a raised parenthesised numeral referring to the footnote below. I transcribed these as \"(5)\", \"(6)\" and \"(7)\" rather than using the caret form, since the marker is the whole cell and there is no value for it to attach to.\n\nThe marker of the first footnote is partly broken up in the scan and is not crisply legible on its own; I read it as 5 because it heads a 5-6-7 sequence with the two footnotes below it and because the text (\"Awaiting Board decision\") matches the undecided Newton Packing Co. row, whose cell reads (5).\n\nA small ink blot sits in the leader dots of the \"Northrup Corporation\" row and a stray speck sits above the caption; both are scan artefacts, not printed content.
