Reader’s notes

p. 265. Column count: 4 (stub "Name of case", plus "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", plus "Date decision issued"). Footnote-reference cells: most cells in the "Date decision issued" column (and one in "Date closed") contain nothing but a raised numeral printed inside parentheses, e.g. a superscript 2 between parentheses. Because these stand alone rather than being attached to a value, they are transcribed as "(2)", "(3)", "(4)", "(5)" rather than with the caret convention. Where a marker is attached to a date (Abrasive Co. and Alaska Glacier Sea Food Co.), the raised 1 is printed BEFORE the date and has been moved behind a caret: "June 14, 1938^1", "June 6, 1938^1". Suspected misprint: Alaska Glacier Sea Food Co., "Date closed" reads "Mar. 18, 1838"; 1938 is clearly intended (the hearing opened Mar. 16, 1938). Transcribed as printed. Ditto entries: the two lowest "Do." rows under Armour & Co. carry ditto marks printed as leader dashes around the word "do" ("-----do--------") in both date columns. I transcribed the content as "do"; I could not resolve at this scan resolution whether a period follows it, so "do." is also possible. Legibility / doubtful cells: the raised numerals are very small on this 1-bit scan and a raised 2 is easily confused with a raised 3. The cells I am least sure of, all in "Date decision issued", are: Adolf Goebel, Inc.; Alexandria, Barcroft & Washington Transit Co.; Allen Manufacturing Co.; American Chain & Cable Co.; American Can Co.; Aponaug Manufacturing Co.; Armour & Co. and its three "Do." rows; Auburn Foundry, Inc.; Automatic Radio Manufacturing Co., Inc. The (4) at the "Do." row under American Can Co. and the (5) in the "Date closed" column for American Rolling Mill Co. read clearly. Dates and the stub labels are legible throughout. American Rolling Mill Co. has no entry in "Date decision issued" (hearing still in progress, footnote 5 appearing in "Date closed"); that cell is left empty. A stray typographic dot appears in the "Date decision issued" column on the American Chain & Cable Co. line, left of the marker; it is not transcribed. Omitted per instructions: the running head "LIST OF CASES HEARD AND DECISIONS RENDERED—Continued", the "—Continued" line, the lead-in sentence "Following is a list of cases originally heard during the fiscal year 1938:", the italic panel caption "Complaint cases" immediately above the table, and the page number at the foot (partly cut off by the crop, appears to be 253). The table is a single panel and continues past the bottom of this page.

p. 266. Continuation page of an alphabetical case list ("Complaint cases—Continued"); the caption line was omitted as instructed. Four printed columns: stub, "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", and "Date decision issued". Ditto cells: many data cells are printed as leader dashes enclosing the word "do"; these are transcribed as "do". Stub rows repeating the preceding case name are printed as "Do" and are kept as such. Doubtful / notable cells: - Beloit Iron Works, "Date decision issued": the scan shows only "May 16, 19" — the last two digits of the year are missing or illegible; almost certainly "May 16, 1938". - Baer-Wilde Manufacturing Co., "Date opened": a stray raised tick precedes the day ("Dec. ' 9, 1937"); transcribed as "Dec. 9, 1937" on the assumption it is a scan artifact, not a footnote marker. - The small parenthesised superscript digits are the hardest characters on the page; 3, 4 and 5 are only marginally distinguishable. The printed footnote list on this page runs 3–7, and the great majority of "Date decision issued" parentheticals read as (3) ("Awaiting Board decision"), which I have used throughout. Two cells read to me as (4) rather than the contextually expected value and are transcribed as seen: B. A. Corbin & Sons, "Date decision issued" = (4); and Bercut-Richards Packing Co., "Date closed" = (4) where the comparable rows (Bank of America, B. H. Body Co., the three California Packing/Conserving rows) clearly show (5), "Hearing still in progress". Either could be a misreading. - Black Mammoth Consolidated Mining: the marker 6 is printed before the decision date and is recorded as "June 27, 1938^6"; Boss Manufacturing Co. likewise as "Aug. 27, 1937^7". - Apparent misprints, transcribed as printed: Blanton Co. has a "Date opened" (June 26, 1938) later than its "Date closed" (June 21, 1938); Caloric Gas Stove Works shows the hearing closing July 22, 1938 but the decision issued July 31, 1937. - Scan degradation makes capital C resemble O in this typeface (e.g. "B. Mifflin Hood Co." renders as "Oo."). The last row is therefore given as "C. G. Lashley, doing business as L. & A. Bus Lines", consistent with its position in the alphabetical C sequence, though the initial letter images as "O". - Terminal abbreviation periods ("Inc.", "Ltd.") sit immediately before the leader dots and cannot always be separated from them; they are written with the period. - Footnotes 1 and 2 are not reprinted on this page and no markers 1 or 2 appear in the body; the footnote block begins at 3. - "Burson Knitting Co." is printed before "Burnside Steel Foundry Co.", out of strict alphabetical order; row order follows the page.

p. 267. Four printed columns: stub ("Name of case"), the two subcolumns of "Date hearing held" ("Date opened", "Date closed"), and "Date decision issued". 67 body rows; the table is alphabetical (C and D names) and continues past this crop. Footnote-reference cells: many cells carry no value, only a small raised numeral in parentheses standing in for a value (e.g. the "Awaiting Board decision" reference). These are transcribed exactly as printed, e.g. "(2)", rather than in caret form, since there is no text for the marker to attach to. Where a raised marker is attached to a printed date it is moved behind a caret: "Apr. 16, 1938^1" (Cummins Engine Co.), "Jan. 11, 1938^1" (David and Hyman Zoslow), "Feb. 28, 1938^6" (Dartmouth Woolen Mills), "Apr. 20, 1938^8" (Douglas Aircraft Co., Inc.) — in each case the marker is printed to the left of the date. Doubtful cells: - The raised numerals inside parentheses are very small and 2 vs. 3 is not reliably separable at this scan resolution. Every ambiguous parenthesized reference in "Date decision issued" has been read as (2) ("Awaiting Board decision"), which is by far the dominant reference on the page. Footnote 3 ("Settled before decision of Board was issued") is printed under the table, so at least one of these cells is probably (3), but no individual cell could be identified with confidence. - "Derby's Sportswear Co.", Date decision issued: read as (9); it is visibly taller/different from the surrounding markers, but (2) cannot be fully excluded. - Footnote list markers: the page prints 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 (no 4 or 7); the marker glyphs for 2, 3 and 5 are degraded and were assigned from the footnote texts and their matching body references ((5) = "Hearing still in progress" on the three rows with no closing date; (6) = "Consent order issued without a hearing" on Dartmouth Woolen Mills). Suspected misprints, transcribed as printed: - "Consolidated Cigar Corporation, Inc.", Date closed: "June 24, 1398" — year digits transposed, almost certainly 1938 (hearing opened June 23, 1938). - "Dainty Maid Slippers, Inc.", Date closed: "Nov. 3, 1938" against an opening date of Nov. 1, 1937; likely a misprint for 1937. - "Cresent Bed Co., Inc." is printed thus (for Crescent). Cells printing "-----do-------" (ditto for the date above) are transcribed as "do."; the stub ditto lines are transcribed as "Do." The "Date decision issued" cell of the second Douglas Aircraft Co., Inc. line prints "Do." (not a footnote marker). Date-decision cells are blank for Connor Lumber & Land Co., Consumers Power Co. and Dallas Cartage Co. Several capital C's render as "O" in this 1-bit scan (Oitizens, Olark, Olover, Oolumbia, Orane); they are transcribed as C, consistent with the alphabetical ordering. The caption line "Complaint cases—Continued" is omitted as instructed.

p. 268. This is a continuation page of a case list ("Complaint cases—Continued"); the caption line was omitted as instructed. Four columns: stub plus "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", plus "Date decision issued". Parenthesised superscript digits are the printed cell contents in this table, standing in place of a date (e.g. "(2)" = awaiting Board decision), so they are transcribed as "(2)", "(3)", etc. rather than as caret markers. The one true attached marker is on the Egry Register Co., The row, where a raised 1 is printed immediately BEFORE "May 23, 1938" in the decision column; transcribed as "May 23, 1938^1". Main reliability caveat: the raised digits inside the parentheses are tiny and partly filled-in in this 1-bit scan, so 2 vs 3 and 3 vs 4 vs 6 are not always cleanly separable at the resolution available. The great majority read as (2). Cells I read as something other than (2) and would flag as the most doubtful are: Em-Bee Hat Manufacturing Co., Inc. (decision column, read as 3, possibly 4); Enterprise Manufacturing Co. (decision, read as 3); Fanny Farmer, Inc. (decision, read as 6, possibly 5); Fibre Board Container Co. (decision, read as 3); Filtrol Corporation (decision, read as 4); and the third Ford Motor Co. "Do." row, Dec. 16, 1937 / Apr. 9, 1938 (decision, read as 4, possibly 3). The (5) entries sitting in the "Date closed" column (Elmhurst Packers, Filice & Perrilli which reads 4, F. M. Ball. & Co., the Feb. 14, 1938 Ford "Do." row, and Ford Motor Co., a corporation) are clearer because footnote 5 is "Hearing still in progress", which fits a missing closing date; those rows have an empty decision cell. Row-label details: the first row prints as "Dritz-Traum Co., Inc,. and Heirloom Needlework Guild, Inc." with the comma and period transposed by a typesetting slip; normalised to "Inc.,". "F. M. Ball. & Co." is printed with that period after "Ball". Ditto rows are printed as "Do." and kept as separate rows; in the second Foote Brothers row the "Date closed" cell prints "do" between leader dashes, transcribed as "do" (the leaders dropped). Several stray ink specks sit in the body (a dot near the Egry Register label, one near Express Publishing, one under the footnotes) and are not transcribed. Footnote 6's marker prints indistinctly and could be mistaken for a 9, but the sequence 1-6 and the reference usage fix it as 6; its text prints as "compliance withtintermediate report" because of a collided glyph and is read as "with intermediate report".

p. 269. This is a continuation page of an alphabetical case list (entries from "General Furniture Manufacturing Co." through "Inland Lime & Stone Co. and Inland Steel Co."); the table begins on earlier pages and continues after this crop. Column structure: 4 columns — the stub "Name of case", then "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", then "Date decision issued". Ditto cells: four cells are printed as a centred "do" flanked by leader dots/dashes (a ditto mark meaning "same as the row above"). I transcribed these as "do": "Harter Corporation" / Date opened; "Hercules-Campbell Book Co., Inc." / Date closed; and the "Do" row following "Humble Oil & Refining Co." in both Date opened and Date closed. These are not blank-leader cells, so I did not reduce them to "". Parenthesised superscript figures such as (2), (3), (5), (6) stand in place of a date and are footnote references, so I left them in the cell exactly as printed rather than moving them behind a caret. Raised markers printed *before* a date (e.g. "¹ Dec. 3, 1937") were moved behind a caret per the instructions: "Dec. 3, 1937^1". Doubtful cells (300-ppi 1-bit scan; small raised digits 1/2/3 are easily confused): - "H. Zirkin and Sons, Inc." / Date decision issued: read as "(1)"; could be "(3)". Most neighbouring cells are (2) or (3), so this one is the least certain. - "Hercules-Campbell Book Co., Inc." / Date decision issued: the raised marker before "May 25, 1938" reads as 2, but footnote 2 is "Awaiting Board decision," which sits oddly beside an actual decision date; it may be a 1 ("Consent order issued"), matching the "Hershey Chocolate Corporation" row below it. Transcribed as printed: "May 25, 1938^2". - Several "(2)" vs "(3)" cells in the last column carry the usual risk of confusion between those two raised glyphs. Blank cells: "General Furniture Manufacturing Co.", "H. J. Heinz Corporation" and "Hunt Brothers Packing Co." have no entry at all in "Date decision issued" (their Date closed cell holds "(5)", hearing still in progress); these are transcribed as "". Footnote numbering: the page prints footnotes 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 — there is no footnote 4 on this page, and no marker 4 appears in the body. This is as printed, not an omission in the transcription. Stray printing marks (a raised dot to the right of the "Georgia Granite Co." and "Green Silvers Coal Co." decision cells, and one in the leader dots of the "Gotham Shoe Manufacturing Co., Inc." label) appear to be scan/press artefacts and were not transcribed. The caption line "Complaint cases—Continued" was omitted per instructions.

p. 270. Four columns: stub (Name of case), Date opened and Date closed under the spanner "Date hearing held", and Date decision issued. Ditto marks: where the printed cell is "----do----" between leader rules the cell is given as "do"; the stub's ditto rows are given as printed, "Do."; the decision cell of the second Jacob A. Hunkele row is printed "Do." Footnote markers: most cells of the Date decision issued column hold only a small parenthesised superscript reference, e.g. (2); these are transcribed as printed, with no accompanying value. Where a raised marker sits before a date (Inland Steel Co., Killark Electric Manufacturing Co., Lee Clay Products Co.) it has been moved behind the date with a caret. Doubtful cells, all of them tiny superscripts in the Date decision issued column: the digits 2/7 and 3/5 are hard to separate at this scan resolution. I read every ambiguous one as (2) or (3) because footnotes 7 and 8 are not printed on this page, so they should not be referenced here; the cells most at risk are Joliet Wrought Washer Co., Jamestown Veneer & Plywood Corporation, John Lucas & Co., Inc., Lafayette Hotel and the second L. C. Smith & Corona Typewriters row. Keystone Manufacturing Co. is read as (9), the only reference on the page to footnote 9. Two rows, Kansas City Structural Steel and Lansing Co., carry a Date opened but a footnote reference (5) ("Hearing still in progress") in the Date closed column and an empty Date decision issued cell. The footnote list on this page runs 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12; footnotes 1, 7 and 8 are not reprinted here (the table continues from earlier pages). In footnote 10 the mark after "May 10, 1938" is ambiguous between a comma and a period at this resolution; I have written a comma. Several rows are out of strict alphabetical order as printed (Jamestown Veneer before Jacobs Brothers; J. Chesler & Sons between the two Jefferson entries; Lancaster Iron Works between Lane Cotton Mills Co. and Lane Cotton Mills); these are transcribed in the printed order and not resorted. The running caption "Complaint cases—Continued" has been omitted. No column headings are repeated in panels; the page is a single panel.

p. 271. Four columns: stub "Name of case", a spanner "Date hearing held" over "Date opened" and "Date closed", and a tall single heading "Date decision issued" that spans both heading levels. Footnote-marker digit 4: the fourth footnote's own marker and the two body cells that reference it ("Libby, McNeill & Libby" and "Majestic Flour Mills", Date closed column) are printed as a small raised digit that in this scan could equally be read as 5 or 6. Transcribed as (4) because the footnote block under the table runs 1, 2, 3, 4 in order and the note "Hearing still in progress" matches those two rows (hearing opened, no closing date). Both rows have an empty "Date decision issued" cell. Ditto cells: in the Date opened / Date closed / Date decision columns the ditto is printed as leader dots around a lowercase "do" ("-----do------"); transcribed as "do." — the terminal period cannot be separated from the leader dots. Stub dittos are printed "Do." and the last row's Date decision issued cell is a capitalised "Do." Footnote markers 1 on "Loose Wiles Biscuit Co." and "Meadow Valley Lumber Co." are printed to the LEFT of the date (¹Apr. 5, 1938 / ¹June 6, 1938); per instructions they are written after the value as ^1. Doubtful spellings, transcribed exactly as printed: "Lightner Publisher Corporation of Illinois" (the firm is usually "Lightner Publishing Corporation"); "Lynn Coal Co. (Wolfe & Koeing)" (probably "Koenig"); "L. Grief & Bros., Inc." (probably "Greif"); "Maine Shoes Inc." (no comma printed before "Inc."); "M. Bierner & Son"; "Missouri, Arkansas Coach Line, Inc." (no "&" printed). Sequence anomaly as printed: "McGoldrick Lumber Co." appears after "McKaig-Hatch, Inc." and "McKesson & Robbins, Inc.", out of alphabetical order. Not corrected. "Marks Bros. Co." Date decision issued is preceded by a stray leader-dot speck (".May 13, 1938"); transcribed as "May 13, 1938". The crop begins with the continuation line "Complaint cases—Continued" (omitted per instructions); the table number/caption and any preceding rows are on earlier pages.

p. 272. Continuation page of a multi-page alphabetical list ("Complaint cases—Continued"); no total or section rows appear, and the list runs on past Padre Vineyard Co. onto the next page. MAIN CAVEAT — the parenthesized footnote references. The three footnote markers printed under the table read as 1, 3 and 5 (2 and 4 are not printed here, presumably because they are not referenced on this page). In the body, the references in the "Date closed" column are all legibly (5) ("Hearing still in progress"), consistent with those rows having a blank decision column. The references in the "Date decision issued" column are set as a raised digit inside parentheses at roughly 5-6 px and are NOT individually resolvable at this scan resolution: across three separate viewings my reading of the same cell flipped between 1, 2 and 3. Since only footnotes 1 and 3 exist for that column, every such cell must be either (1) "Awaiting Board decision" or (3) "Settled before decision of Board was issued"; I have transcribed them all as (1), the more likely modal value, but an unknown minority of them are almost certainly (3). Any analysis that depends on the awaiting/settled distinction should re-read that column from a higher-resolution source rather than trust these cells. Other doubtful cells: - N. Y. Butchers Meat Co., Date closed: the year is printed with a damaged digit and looks like "1988"; transcribed as "May 19, 1938" since every other year in the table is 1937 or 1938 and the opened date on the same row is May 19, 1938. - Newark Rivet Works, Date opened: the day is either 26 or 28 (6/8 confusion in this 1-bit scan); transcribed "Nov. 28, 1937" on a majority of readings. - Munson Steamship Line and Antonio Outeoa: the second name is blurred and could be "Onteoa" or similar. - A handful of other day figures with 6/8 or 5/6 ambiguity (e.g. National Supply Co. "Apr. 26", Northwestern Manufacturing Co. "Apr. 6", Nevada Consolidated "June 13") are given as best read. Conventions applied: ditto entries printed as "-----do.------" in the date columns are transcribed as "do."; the repeated stub ditto is kept as printed ("Do."). "Owens- Illinois Glass Co." is printed with a space after the hyphen (typesetting artifact) and is given as "Owens-Illinois Glass Co.". Ship names in the Ore Steamship rows (Steelore, Firmore, Chilore, Manigore, Cubore) are printed in italics; the italics are not reproduced. The Ore Steamship block is 14 consecutive rows (8 named, then 6 "Do."), all with Date opened "Apr. 28, 1938"/"do." and Date closed "(5)". Two rows in the Date decision issued column that appear blank for named Ore Steamship cases are genuinely blank, not cut off.

p. 273. Continuation page ("Complaint cases—Continued"); the table begins on earlier pages and no new caption is printed here. Column headings are printed on this page and are transcribed. Ditto marks: cells printed as "----do----" are transcribed as "do"; stub labels printed as "Do." are kept as "Do.". The "Date decision issued" cell of "Phillips Packing Co. and Phillips Can Co." is printed "Do." (capital D, a ditto of the date above), transcribed as printed. Parenthesised superscript numerals that stand alone in the "Date decision issued" column (and in "Date closed" for the "hearing still in progress" rows) are reference marks used in place of a value; they are kept in parentheses, e.g. "(2)". Leading raised markers printed before a date are moved behind a caret: "¹Apr. 23, 1938" -> "Apr. 23, 1938^1"; "¹ May 28, 1938" -> "May 28, 1938^1"; the Republic Steel cell -> "Apr. 8, 1938^12". Doubtful readings (300-ppi bitonal scan; small raised 2 and 3 are nearly identical): the marker on "Republic Steel" / "Date decision issued" and the matching last footnote could be 12 or 13 — I read it as 12 in both places so they agree, but 13 is possible. Likewise the (2) vs (3) distinction is uncertain in several "Date decision issued" cells, in particular Pearlstone Printing and Stationery Co., Peoria Cordage Co., Phillips Petroleum Co., Revlon Nail Enamel Corporation, Revolution Cotton Mills Co., Roemer Bros. Trucking Co., Ronni Parfums Inc., and Rueping Leather Co., Fred. For the four "Do." rows under Reliance Manufacturing Co. and for Richmond-Chase Co., the "(5)" mark sits under "Date closed" and the "Date decision issued" cell is blank; the Richmond-Chase "(5)" is set slightly left of centre but still within the "Date closed" column. Possible misprint kept as printed: "Press Co., Inc., and The Gannet Co., Inc." (the firm is usually spelled Gannett). "R. Boehes-L. E. Rusch" is a low-confidence reading of the surname. A stray ink speck follows the "(2)" on the "Sager Lock Works" row and was ignored.

p. 274. Four columns: stub "Name of case", a two-column spanner "Date hearing held" (Date opened / Date closed), and "Date decision issued". This is a continuation page ("Complaint cases—Continued"), so the case list starts and ends mid-alphabet; the printer's signature line "108817—38——18" at the foot is not a footnote and has been omitted. IMPORTANT — superscript footnote markers in the "Date decision issued" column: the standalone parenthesized references are set as small raised digits that are at the resolution limit of this scan, and 2 cannot be reliably told from 3. I have transcribed all of the ambiguous ones as "(2)" because that marker ("Awaiting Board decision") clearly dominates the column, but footnote 3 is reprinted under this table, which normally means at least a few of these cells are in fact "(3)". Cells where my reading wavered between (2) and (3) across passes: Sanitary Refrigerator Co.; Serrick Corporation; Shelby Shops, Inc.; Shenandoah-Dives Mining Co.; Shuron Optical Co., Inc.; Smith, Manufacturing Co., A. P.; Somerset Shoe Co. (Do. row); Southern Colorado Power Co.; Southern Steamship Co.; St. Paul Garment Co.; Stehli & Co., Inc.; Sterling Electric Motors, Inc.; Stewart Die Casting Corporation; Stockholders Publishing Co. Treat the 2/3 distinction in this column as unverified. Other doubtful readings: - Singer Manufacturing Co., "Date decision issued": a single raised mark precedes "May 25, 1938"; I read it as footnote marker 1 (transcribed "May 25, 1938^1"), but it could be a 3 or a stray speck. Footnote 1 is not printed on this page. - Spaulding Bakeries, Inc., "Date decision issued": read as "(11)". Footnote 11 is not printed on this page, so it must be defined on an earlier page. - The third footnote's marker is blurred and reads as either 5 or 6; I have given it as 5 because the in-table references to "Hearing still in progress" (Santa Cruz Fruit Packing, Southwestern Greyhound Lines, Sterling Co. and its Do. row) are all (5). - "Davidow Sportswear" is transcribed as printed, but its position between "Spaulding Bakeries, Inc." and "Spotless Stores, Inc." implies the entry should alphabetize under "Sp-"; the printed line may be an inverted form such as "Sportswear, Davidow", or the original may simply be out of alphabetical order. Both of my readings of the image showed "Davidow Sportswear". - "Soutport Petroleum Co." is transcribed as printed; this is very likely a misprint for "Southport Petroleum Co." - Ditto cells printed as "____do____" in the two date columns are given as "do"; the leader dashes around them have been dropped. Stub ditto lines are given as "Do." - Rows whose hearing is still in progress (Santa Cruz Fruit Packing, Southwestern Greyhound Lines, Sterling Co., and Sterling Co. "Do.") carry "(5)" under "Date closed" and leave "Date decision issued" blank. - Scobey Fireproof Storage Co.: a small stray ink mark sits to the left of the marker in the "Date decision issued" cell; treated as a speck, not a character.

p. 275. This is an alphabetical case list (S through U) continuing from the previous page; the caption line "Complaint cases—Continued" was omitted as instructed. Cell content conventions used here: (a) Where a data cell contains only a raised footnote reference set in parentheses (the printed way of saying "see footnote n" instead of a date), it is transcribed as (2), (3), (4), (5), (11). (b) Where a cell prints a date preceded by a raised marker — "Tip Top Creamery Co", Date decision issued — the marker is moved behind a caret: "Dec. 4, 1937^1". (c) Ditto cells printed as "----do----" in the date columns are transcribed as "do"; the leader dashes around them are dropped. Stub ditto rows keep the printed capitalised "Do". Doubtful cells: the parenthetical superscript digits are very small at this scan resolution and 2/3 (and occasionally 1) are hard to separate. The great majority read as (2) "Awaiting Board decision", which is consistent with a fiscal-1938 pending-case list, but individual cells could be misread — in particular "Tennessee Products Corporation" (read as (3)) and "Theurer Wagon Works, Inc" (read as (2)) in the Date decision issued column. "Tascarella Bros" reads as a two-character marker (11), matching the printed footnote 11. Rows "Stockton Food Products, Inc., California Processors & Growers, Inc." and "The Packwell Corporation, California Processors & Growers, Inc." carry the (5) "Hearing still in progress" marker in the Date closed column and have an empty Date decision issued cell. Row-label spellings worth flagging: "Stromberg Carlson Telephone Manufacturing Co" appears unhyphenated in the scan (the firm is usually written Stromberg-Carlson); "U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co" has a stray ink speck before the ampersand in the scan, not a punctuation mark. Footnote markers 6 through 10 are not reprinted on this page because no cell on it uses them.

p. 276. Four printed columns: stub "Name of case", then "Date opened" and "Date closed" under the spanner "Date hearing held", then the tall heading "Date decision issued". The crop continues a table from earlier pages (the caption line reads "Complaint cases—Continued"), but the column headings are printed on this page, so they are given. Parenthesized raised digits such as (2), (5), (6), (10) are the whole content of their cell — a footnote reference standing in place of a date — so they are transcribed as the cell value rather than as a ^ marker. Where a raised digit sits before a date (Western Union Telegraph Co. "Do." row and Woodside Cotton Mills) it is a marker and is written after the date as "June 18, 1938^1" and "Apr. 6, 1938^1". Main doubt: at this scan resolution the raised 2 and raised 3 inside the parentheses in the "Date decision issued" column are very hard to separate. The rows read as (3) are Universal Clothing Co., Inc.; Ward Baking Co. and its "Do."; Warshaw Manufacturing Co., Inc.; Washington Dehydrated Food Co., a corporation; Werthan Bag Co.; Werthan Bag Corporation; Western Felt Works; and Winnsboro Granite Corporation — every other parenthesized marker in that column is read as (2). Any individual one of these could be the other digit; the Werthan Bag Co. / Werthan Bag Corporation pair and Western Felt Works are the least certain. Other points: the "Date decision issued" cell of "Utah Copper Co.-Kennecott Copper Corporation" is blank — "June 16, 1938" is printed on the "Do." line beneath it and is placed there. "Woolrich Woolen Mills" carries "(6)" in both "Date opened" and "Date closed". The row label "Ault Williamson Shoe Co." is printed that way even though it falls in the alphabetical run at "Williamson". Trailing abbreviation periods ("Co.", "Inc.") run into the leader dots and are transcribed with the period. "----do----" cells are given as "do" with the dash leaders dropped. A stray ink speck sits in the right margin beside the "Ward Baking Co." row and is not table content. Footnote markers 7, 8 and 9 are not printed on this page; the last footnote's marker is read as 10 but the scan renders the second digit faintly.
