  1. 1 Valid votes include all votes cast less blank, void, and challenged votes.
  2. 2 Unaffiliated unions which represent more than one plant or company.
  3. 3 Unaffiliated unions which represent one plant or company.
  4. 4 I. e., votes cast for neither organization when more than one labor organization appeared on the ballot.
  5. 5 Includes votes cast "for neither."
  6. 6 Includes 13 elections which resulted in a tie vote.

299 of 322 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 1 cell breaks a sum: 'Total', column 5: prints 394,558, rows '1. Boston' to '22. Denver' add to 393,649.

Reader’s notes

p. 56. 19 columns. The stub column has no printed heading; "Region:" is a body line with no values. Blank value cells are printed as dash rules and are transcribed as "". This is a degraded 1-bit scan in which 0/6 and 0/9 are easily confused. Ten cells were visually ambiguous and are transcribed as the digit that the printed row total and the printed column total independently require (both checks agree in every case; no value was computed where the print is legible): Chicago consent 39 (reads like 30; 39+12=51 and the column total 812 both require 39); Baltimore valid votes Total 28,606 (reads like 28,600; its row components sum to 28,606 and the column total 343,587 requires it); New Orleans for trade unions 4,926 (reads like 4,026); Fort Worth for trade unions 1,109 (reads like 1,100); Kansas City for trade unions 2,651 (reads like 2,051); San Francisco for trade unions 5,691 (reads like 5,091) — these four are each fixed by their row and jointly by the column total 232,989; San Francisco local 3,869 (reads like 3,860; also required by the printed 43.4 percentage); Minneapolis against all unions 395 (reads like 305; also required by the printed 4.4 percentage); Cleveland elections won by trade unions 36 (reads like 30) and Milwaukee 29 (reads like 20), both required by their rows and by the column total 816. One unresolved discrepancy: the "Number of employees — Eligible to vote" column as transcribed sums to 393,649, but the printed total is 394,558, a difference of 909. Every other column's entries sum exactly to its printed total, so either one or two digits in this column are misread in the scan (the likeliest candidates are the hundreds digit of Pittsburgh's 11,011 or Detroit's 9,033, a 0/9 pair worth 900, plus a units digit worth 9 in Buffalo's 11,420 or St. Louis's 3,300) or the printed total is a misprint. I could not resolve it at this image resolution, so all five cells are transcribed exactly as they appear. Minor: Philadelphia's "Against all unions" percentage is printed 26.9 although 3,920/14,540 rounds to 27.0, and Kansas City's trade-union percentage is printed 50.0 although 2,651/5,308 rounds to 49.9; in both rows the three printed percentages sum to 100.0, so both are transcribed as printed.
