  1. 1 Less than 0.05 percent.

0 of 50 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 47. Seven columns: stub, "Number of cases", two columns under the first spanning "Percentage of—", "Number of workers involved", and two columns under the second spanning "Percentage of—". "Number of cases" and "Number of workers involved" are tall single headings spanning both heading levels, so each is repeated in both; the stub has no printed heading. In the row "(c) Payroll check" under "Cases closed after formal action", the last column ("Total number of workers involved in cases on docket") holds a raised 1 in parentheses standing in place of a value, i.e. a reference to footnote 1 ("Less than 0.05 percent."), not a quantity; it is transcribed as "(1)". The footnote marker is printed superscript inside the parentheses. A small isolated dot is printed in the heading cell just below "Number of workers involved". It does not correspond to any printed footnote (only footnote 1 appears under the table), so I have treated it as a stray mark/ink speck rather than a footnote marker and left it out of the heading. Row 2's label is set tight in the original ("July1, 1937"); transcribed with the normal space as "Cases received July 1, 1937, to June 30, 1938". The row "Total cases closed July 1, 1937 to June 30, 1938" is printed with no comma after "1937", as transcribed. All printed totals are internally consistent: 796 + 3,623 = 4,419; the six "before formal action" case counts sum to 2,555; the nine "after formal action" counts sum to 602; 2,555 + 602 = 3,157; 872 + 264 + 126 = 1,262; 3,157 + 1,262 = 4,419. The worker columns check the same way (391,126 + 1,097,523 = 1,488,649; 599,654 + 299,589 = 899,243; 361,065 + 184,107 + 44,234 = 589,406; 899,243 + 589,406 = 1,488,649). No misprints detected. Percentage cells less than 1 are printed without a leading zero (".8", ".5") and are kept that way.
