Reader’s notes

p. 163. Six printed columns: stub, two columns under "By trial examiner", two under "By Board", and "Date decision issued". The "By Board" pair is used only once in this crop (Wheeling Steel Co.); every other row leaves it as leader dots, transcribed as "". Footnote references in the "Date decision issued" column are printed as small raised letters inside parentheses with no accompanying value; they are transcribed exactly as the glyphs appear, e.g. "(b)", "(c)", "(d)". The "a" marker on the "By Board" heading is likewise a raised letter and is given as "By Board^a". A large brace in the printed table joins the "International Mercantile Marine Co." row and the following "Further hearing" row, with the single decision date "Mar. 21, 1936" printed to the right of the brace and vertically aligned with the "Further hearing" line. The date has been placed on the "Further hearing" row and the Marine Co. row's decision cell left empty; a reader should understand the one date as covering both rows. "International Mercantile Marine Co.", Date opened: printed as "Feb. 13. 1936" with what appears to be a period rather than a comma after the day. Transcribed as printed; it is most likely a broken comma in the typesetting or scan. "C. G. Conn, Ltd.": the leading initial is a worn capital that could be read as either C or O in this 1-bit scan. Transcribed as "C" (the firm is C. G. Conn, Ltd.), but the glyph itself is ambiguous. "Further hearing" under Protective Motor Service Co., Inc. is dated Aug. 6, 1936 with a decision issued May 6, 1936, i.e. the decision date precedes the hearing. Transcribed as printed; it may be a misprint in the source. Rows carrying only "do" (ditto) in a date column are transcribed as "do" with their leader dots dropped, per instruction. Two cases appear twice in the list (Bemis Bros. Bag Co. and Gray-Knox Marble Co.); both occurrences are printed and both are retained. Minor ink specks appear in the "By Board" columns on the "Do" (El Paso Electric) and "Protective Motor Service Co., Inc." rows; they are scan artifacts, not values. The table has no total row and runs to the bottom rule of the crop, so it presumably continues on the following page; the printed page number and any continuation line are omitted.

p. 164. COLUMN COUNT: 6 — stub ("Name of case"), four date columns under "Date hearing held—" (By trial examiner: Date opened / Date closed; By Board: Date opened / Date closed), and "Date decision issued". FOOTNOTE-REFERENCE CELLS IN THE LAST COLUMN: where no decision date is printed, the "Date decision issued" cell holds only a small raised letter in parentheses. Because the instructions require a raised marker to be written behind a caret rather than inside the value, I have rendered these as the parenthesis pair plus the marker, e.g. a raised b in parentheses is written "(a)^b". Readers should understand every such cell as a bare footnote reference — "(b)", "(c)" or "(a)" as printed — and NOT as a value "(a)" with a superscript. If the grid is consumed programmatically, these 23 cells are reference marks, not data. Markers used in the body, by row: b — The Optical Products Co., Riverside Knitting Mills, Welwood Norwich Silk Mills Inc., Pacific Mills Co., Claussner Hosiery Co., Schonfield & Reis, Fisher Body Corporation, Chevrolet Motor Co.; c — Boss Manufacturing Co. and its Do., Aluminum Products Co., Trenton Mills Inc., S. Gutman & Co. Inc., J. Freezer & Sons Inc., Fall River Gas Works Co., Fit-Rite Slipper Co. Inc., Memphis Furniture Mfg. Co. and its Do., Atlas Mills, J. W. Sanders Cotton Mills Inc., Stanley Works Co., Boyertown Burial Casket Co.; a — American Potash & Chemical Co., Chesapeake Mfg. Co. DOUBTFUL MARKER: the two cells I read as marker "a" (American Potash & Chemical Co. and Chesapeake Mfg. Co., "Date decision issued") carry a raised letter that could equally be "e"; the glyph is too small to resolve at this resolution. Only markers "b" and "c" are defined under the table, so this third marker is presumably defined on an earlier page of the same table. DASH RULES: cells filled with a dashed rule ("-------") are transcribed as "". In every row but International Harvester Co. and Claussner Hosiery Co. both "By Board" columns are dashed; for those two rows both "By trial examiner" columns are dashed instead. LEADER-DOT "do": the repeat word is printed as "do" surrounded by leader dots; the dots are dropped and the cell is "do". Stub repeat rows are printed as "Do" followed by leaders and are transcribed "Do."; the two "Do." values in the last column are printed with a period and no leaders. WRAPPED LABELS JOINED: "Welwood N o r w i c h S i l k Mills, Inc." (letterspaced in print, normalised to single spaces), "American Potash & Chemical Co." (printed "Chemi-/cal Co."), "J. W. Sanders Cotton Mills, Inc.", "Lykes Bros.-Ripley Steamship Co." (printed "Steam-/ship Co."). APPARENT MISPRINT: St. Joseph Stock Yards Co. shows a trial-examiner "Date closed" of May 18, 1936 against a "Date opened" of "do" (= May 18, 1936 from Fit-Rite Slipper Co. Inc., itself "do" for Fall River Gas Works Co.'s May 18, 1936) — consistent, but note that the preceding Fit-Rite row's closed date is "do" (May 19, 1936), so the sequence of closed dates runs May 19, May 19, May 18. Transcribed exactly as printed. CROP: this page carries the column headings but no caption and no "—Continued" line is visible; the table continues from a preceding page (hence the missing definition of footnote marker "a").

p. 165. Six columns: stub (Name of case), Date opened / Date closed under "By trial examiner", Date opened / Date closed under "By Board", and "Date decision issued". The two "By Board" columns are empty for every row on this page — each cell is printed as a dash rule only, so all are transcribed as "". Braced groups: from "Pacific Steamship Lines" (row 26) to the end, each case is printed as two lines joined by a brace — the case line (original hearing, July 20-21, 1936) and an indented "Further hearing" line (Sept. 2-3, 1936). The single date in "Date decision issued" is printed once, vertically centred between the two lines of the brace; I have placed it on the case row and left the "Further hearing" row's last cell empty. It applies to the pair. Two labels inside this section wrap and are braced to a single date line: "Dispatch Stevedoring & Contracting Co." and "American-Hawaiian Steamship Co."; each is one row here. Ditto marks are kept as printed: lowercase "do." (with leader dashes, dropped) in the trial-examiner date columns, capitalised "Do." in the decision column. Footnote markers: the heading marker and the in-cell markers are tiny raised letters. Cells whose whole content is a parenthesised marker are written as "(^b)" / "(^c)", preserving the printed parentheses. The raised letters "a" and "c" are both small round glyphs at this resolution and are not reliably distinguishable from each other; I assigned them by sense — the heading marker is "a" (footnote a concerns the Board-hearing columns) and the Uxbridge Worsted decision cell is "c" ("Awaiting Board decision"), since it clearly lacks the ascender that makes "b" distinct. The four cells read as "(^b)" (Arrow Line, Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line, Clermont Cravat Co., Pacific Lumber Co.) all show that ascender. Footnote b: the second word is degraded and renders as "Settted"; I have transcribed it as "Settled", the evidently intended and almost certainly printed word, but the glyph is doubtful. Doubtful spellings, as printed: "The Kingsly Co. of California" (not "Kingsley"); "J. Ramselius"; "Clermont Cravat Co."; "Williams Dimond & Co." (no comma after Williams). The first stub label appears as "Martin Dyeing & Finishing Co." with a mark after "Co." that may be a colon or the start of the leader dots. "Pacific Steamship Lines" and "American-Hawaiian Steamship Co." each appear twice in the list (the earlier occurrences carry ", a corporation" for American-Hawaiian); both are transcribed where printed. Omitted as instructed: the running head "LIST OF CASES HEARD AND DECISIONS RENDERED—Continued", the lead-in sentence "Following is a list of cases originally heard during the fiscal year 1937:", and the page number 159. Nothing appears cut off by the crop; the table ends on this page with the footnotes.

p. 166. Continuation page of a case-list table (printed page 160); no caption or total line appears in the crop, but the full three-level column heading is printed, so header_rows is filled. Brace-spanned cells: for the first 33 case entries the typesetter joins the case row and its "Further hearing" row with a right-facing brace, and prints ONE "Date decision issued" value vertically centred between the two lines. I placed that single value on the first row of each pair (the named-case row) and left the "Further hearing" row's last cell empty; no decision date is separately printed for a "Further hearing" line. "By Board" columns: both the "Date opened" and "Date closed" columns under "By Board" are empty for every row on this page — they carry only a dash rule (------), drawn once per brace group — so all those cells are "". Footnote marker: the cells for "Higgins Co., Inc" and "Hobbs-Wall Co., Inc" in the "Date decision issued" column hold only a parenthesised raised character, transcribed "(^b)". The raised glyph is small and could conceivably be a numeral rather than a lowercase "b"; the same glyph opens the single footnote below the table, which I also read as "b". "Paramino Lumber Co", "Date decision issued" column: a small tick/apostrophe-like speck is printed immediately before "Do.". I read it as a printing artefact, not a footnote marker, and did not transcribe it; no footnote with such a marker is printed. Last row: the stub reads "Do." and both trial-examiner date columns hold the ditto word "do" between leader dots; I transcribed them as "do" with the dots dropped. Label wrapping repaired: "American Mail Line, a cor-/poration", "Los Angeles-San Francisco/Navigation Co., Inc", "Chamberlain Steamship Co.,/Inc", "Freeman Steamship Co.,/Inc", "Oceanic & Oriental Naviga-/tion Co", and "Pacific Greyhound Lines,/Inc." were each joined into one row label. "McCormick Steamship Co" and "Sudden & Christenson" each appear twice, as printed. Scan quality is a 1-bit halftone; the repeated date values ("July 20, 1936", "July 21, 1936", "Sept. 2, 1936", "Sept. 3, 1936") are uniform down the page, which makes individual-digit misreads unlikely but not impossible.

p. 167. Continuation page (p. 161) of a multi-page case list; column headings are reprinted here so they are given. No footnote "a" is printed on this page, though the markers used are b and c, so footnote a presumably appears on an earlier page of the table. The six columns are: Name of case (stub); Date hearing held—By trial examiner—Date opened; —Date closed; Date hearing held—By Board—Date opened; —Date closed; Date decision issued. Cells that print only a small raised letter inside parentheses, i.e. (b) or (c), stand in place of a decision date and are footnote references; they are transcribed as "(b)" / "(c)". These superscript letters are very small in the 300-ppi scan and b/c are the chief risk of confusion; the readings I am least certain of are the markers for "The Associated Press", "The Weiss & Klau Co." and "Cities Service Refining Co." (read as c, c, b). Braces in the body join rows that share one entry, and I placed the shared entry on the first row of each braced group: - "Seas Shipping Co." / "Further hearing": a brace spans the two rows in the Board columns (both blank) and "Dec. 4, 1936" is printed vertically centred between the two lines in the Date decision issued column; I put it on the "Seas Shipping Co." row. - "United States Steel Corporation and carnegie Illinois Steel Corporation" / "Further hearing" / "Do.": a brace spans the three rows and "(b)" is printed beside the middle ("Further hearing") line; I put it on the first row of the group, since it belongs to the case as a whole. "Jan 23, 1937" in Date decision issued for "Tidewater Express Lines, Inc." is printed without a period after "Jan"; every other month abbreviation in the column has one, so this is most likely a dropped/faint period, transcribed as printed. "United States Steel Corporation and carnegie Illinois Steel Corporation" is printed with a lower-case "carnegie" and no hyphen (the firm is Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation); transcribed as printed. Long dash rules ("------") filling the Board columns of most rows, and the trial-examiner columns of the last six rows, are transcribed as "". Ditto entries printed as "___do___" are transcribed as "do"; stub and decision-column ditto entries printed "Do." keep that form. A faint stray dot sits in the Board "Date closed" column on the "New York & Cuba Mail Steamship Co." row; it appears to be a printing artefact, not a value, so that cell is "".

p. 168. This is a continuation page (p. 162) of a case-by-case hearing list; no caption or "—Continued" line is printed on the crop, but the column headings are printed in full, so header_rows is populated. Footnote markers: the "Date decision issued" column holds a parenthesised raised letter in place of a date. Only footnotes a and b are printed under the table, so every marker must be one of those two. The raised "b" is legible; the raised "a" is a small blurred glyph that could be misread as "c" or "e" at this scan resolution (the same glyph opens the first printed footnote line). I have transcribed those cells as (a). Affected rows: Export Steamship Corporation, Calvert-Maryland Distilling Co., Inc., Wald Transfer & Storage Co., Inc., Oregon Worsted Co., Condenser Corporation of America (both occurrences and both "Further hearing" rows), Cornell Dubilier Corporation and its "Further hearing", Suburban Lumber Co., Black Diamond Steamship Corporation, Appalachian Electric Power Co., Central Truck Lines, Inc., and the following "Do". Row 1 (Export Steamship Corporation) is the least certain of these — its marker sits alone at the top of the column and may well be (b) like the 29 steamship rows that follow it; a reader who needs that cell should re-check the original. The two Willard, Inc. rows ("Willard, Inc." and "Further hearing") are joined in the printed "By Board" columns by a single brace enclosing a dash rule; both Board cells are therefore empty, and "June 30, 1937" is printed on the first of the two lines, where I have placed it. "do" cells are printed as ditto marks set between leader dashes; I transcribed the word only. The "Date closed" cell for the first Condenser Corporation of America row reads "Pending" rather than a date, as printed. Rows labelled "Do" repeat the case above them, as printed. "Mooremack Gulf Lines" is transcribed as printed (the firm is elsewhere spelled Moore-McCormack). "American Pioneer Line, Atlantic Division, Inc." shows what may be a semicolon after "Line" in the scan; I read it as the comma it almost certainly is. Running head ("SECOND ANNUAL REPORT") and page number 162 omitted per instructions.

p. 169. Six printed columns: stub "Name of case", two columns under "By trial examiner" (Date opened / Date closed), two under "By Board" (Date opened / Date closed), and "Date decision issued". The two "By Board" columns are filled with dash rules on every body row of this page, so they are transcribed as "" throughout. The "Date decision issued" column frequently holds only a parenthesized raised letter referring to a footnote; these are written "(^b)" and "(^c)" to show that the letter inside the parentheses is a superscript footnote marker, not printed text. Rows "Willard, Inc." (Mar. 18, 1937) and the following "Further hearing" (May 11, 1937) are joined by a printed brace in the "Date closed" area, and the single decision date "June 30, 1937" is set beside the brace, applying to both rows; it is placed on the "Willard, Inc." row here and the "Further hearing" row's decision cell is left empty. The second "Willard, Inc." row (the one after "The Borden Co. et al") appears in the scan as "Willard; Inc" — the mark after "Willard" could be a semicolon or a comma with a speck; transcribed as a comma. The "By Board" heading has a stray ink dot printed after it ("By Board ."); treated as a speck and omitted. Dates are printed with extra alignment spacing (e.g. "Mar. 1, 1937", "Mar. 15,1937", "Apr. 8, 1937"); spacing is normalized to "Mon. D, YYYY". Ditto marks in the data columns are printed lowercase as "do" with trailing leader dots; stub ditto rows are printed "Do." and kept as such. This table carries full column headings on this page but is a continuation of a case list begun earlier (footnote letters start at b, with no "a" marker on this page) and continues past the bottom of this page.

p. 170. The page continues a table from the preceding page: no caption and no total row, and the stub's ditto entries ("do", "Do") refer back to values printed earlier. The six columns are the stub plus Date opened / Date closed under "By trial examiner", Date opened / Date closed under "By Board", and "Date decision issued". Both "By Board" columns are a dash rule on every row of this page, so they are transcribed as "". Last column: most cells hold nothing but a small raised footnote letter inside parentheses, with no value attached. I transcribed these literally as "(b)" / "(c)" rather than as caret markers, since the parenthesised reference is the whole printed cell content. These raised letters are only a few pixels tall in this scan and b and c are the hardest pair to separate; my readings are best-effort and the specific b-vs-c calls should be treated as doubtful, especially in the final block ("Charles Cushman Shoe Co." and the three "Do" rows beneath it, "Somerset Shoe Co" and the three "Do" rows beneath it), where I read (b),(b),(c),(b) and (b),(b),(b),(c) but the whole block may well be a uniform run of (b). The printed footnote list runs b, c, e, f — markers a and d are not printed on this page, presumably because they are referenced only on the preceding page. The third footnote's marker is small and could be d rather than e; I read it as e because the body marker it serves ("Pending" for Biles Coleman Lumber Co.) precedes the f marker on National Motor Bearing Co. Row labels that wrap were joined and end-of-line hyphens repaired: "Salinas Valley Vegetable Ex-/change", "The Goodyear Tire & Rub-/ber Co.", "Southgate Nelson Corpora-/tion" (twice), "McCabe, Hamilton & Ren-/ny, Ltd.". "New York-Pennsylvania Motor Express, Inc." is printed with the first word letterspaced ("N e w"); the spacing is typographic justification and was removed. "Somerset Shoe Co" is printed without a closing period, unlike the other "Co." labels. "American Cyanamid & Chemical Corporation" shows a trial-examiner hearing opened "do" (May 13, 1937, carried from the Southgate Nelson Corporation row) and closed May 13, 1937, i.e. opened and closed the same day; transcribed as printed.

p. 171. Six printed columns: stub plus a four-column "Date hearing held—" spanner (By trial examiner: Date opened / Date closed; By Board: Date opened / Date closed) and a tall "Date decision issued" column. Footnote-reference cells: in the "Date decision issued" column most cells hold nothing but a parenthesized raised letter, e.g. (b) or (c). Because the marker is the entire cell rather than something attached to a value, it is transcribed with its printed parentheses — "(b)", "(c)" — not in caret form. Caret form is used only where a marker is attached to text: "Pending^g", "do.^g", "Pending^h", "Pending^i". Suspected misprint, row "Clark Shoe Co.", column "By trial examiner / Date opened": it reads "June 15, 1937" although the same row's Date closed is "May 24, 1937", and the 21 rows below it that carry "do." in that column are followed by openings of May 27, June 1, June 2, June 3 ... in ascending order. The printed value is almost certainly an error for "May 15, 1937"; it is transcribed exactly as printed. Row "Idaho-Maryland Mining Co.": the "Date decision issued" cell is ink-blotted and heavier than its neighbours. It is read as "(c)", consistent with the rows around it, but the letter cannot be resolved with certainty — it could be another raised letter. The final "d" of "Maryland" in that same row's label is likewise blotted but legible from context. Footnote lettering on this page starts at "b" and jumps from "c" to "g"; letters a and d–f are not printed here, presumably because they are defined on the earlier pages of this multi-page table. The three "By Board" rows (International Mercantile Marine Co., Luckenbach Steamship Co., Inc., Black Diamond Steamship Corporation) show dash rules or blanks in the two trial-examiner columns; these are transcribed as empty cells. "Industrial Rayon Corp." near the foot is likewise a By-Board row. "Do." in the stub repeats the preceding case name; "do." in the date columns repeats the date above. Both are kept as printed. Column rules are unbroken down the page, so no column assignment is in doubt.

p. 172. The table is a continuation of a case list that runs across several pages; column headings are printed on this page, so they are given. The last column holds only a parenthesized footnote reference on every row; the printed glyph is a small italic/raised letter that reads as "e" throughout, matching the single footnote "e Awaiting Board decision." at the foot of the page. The scan renders several of these as a smudged "(c)" or "(o)"; I have normalized all of them to "(e)" on the strength of the printed footnote. The references on the last two rows (Panama R. R. Co. Steamship Line, Pennsylvania Shipping Co.) are especially faint and the letter inside the parentheses is barely legible. Columns 2-5 of the body carry dash leaders in almost every cell; these are rendered as "". The "do" cells in the two "By Board" columns are printed as "do" surrounded by dash leaders; only "do" is transcribed. Whether a period follows "do" is not resolvable at this resolution, so none is written. Doubtful row labels: "Grace Line, Inc." prints with a degraded final letter that could be read as "Lino"; I read it as "Line". "Moor & McCormack Co., Inc." is transcribed as printed (the firm is normally "Moore & McCormack"), and the later row "Mooremack Gulf Lines, Inc." is likewise as printed. "Continental Steamship Co." has a heavily inked label but the reading is not in real doubt. The table continues past the bottom of this page; the crop ends after "Pennsylvania Shipping Co." with no total row.

p. 173. Six printed columns: stub "Name of case", then the spanner "Date hearing held—" over four columns (By trial examiner: Date opened / Date closed; By Board: Date opened / Date closed), then "Date decision issued". FOOTNOTE LETTER UNCERTAIN: the italic superscript letter used in the "Date decision issued" column for almost every row, and the second printed footnote ("Awaiting Board decision."), is a small letter that at this scan resolution reads as either 'e' or 'c'. I transcribed it as 'e' throughout (cells "(e)" and footnote "e Awaiting Board decision."), consistently in both the cells and the footnote list, but a reader should verify against a higher-resolution scan; if it is 'c' then every "(e)" cell and the second footnote should be re-lettered. The 'b', 'i' and 'k' markers are unambiguous. The "Date decision issued" column contains no dates anywhere on this page: every cell holds only a parenthesized footnote letter, "(e)" or "(b)", which is how it is printed. Cells transcribed as "do" are printed as "do" embedded in a leader-dot rule ("----do----"); the leaders are dropped per instruction. Cells transcribed as "" are either blank or a plain dash/leader rule. Rows 1–26 ("Petroleum Navigation Co." through "Waterman Steamship Corp.") have both "By trial examiner" cells empty and carry the June 21, 1937 Board hearing; rows 27–54 have both "By Board" cells empty. "Canadian Fur Trappers Corporation et al" — the date separators in "June 24, 1937" (Date opened) and "June 30, 1937" (Date closed) look more like periods than commas in this scan; I normalized to the comma used in every other date on the page, but the glyphs are doubtful. "Ward Furniture Mfg. Co." — the Date closed value in the earlier of its two rows (the row following the two "Do" rows) is faint; the tens digit could be 3 rather than 8. I read it as "June 28, 1937" partly on the strength of the second, clearer "Ward Furniture Mfg. Co." row near the foot of the table, which reads "June 28, 1937". "Ward Furniture Mfg. Co." appears twice as a row label (once after the two "Do" rows, once three rows from the bottom), both times with Date opened "do", Date closed "June 28, 1937" and marker "(b)". This duplication is as printed, not a transcription error. The two "Do" rows are printed as "Do" followed by leader dots; it is not possible to separate an abbreviation period from the first leader dot, so they are given as "Do". The same ambiguity applies to the trailing period on abbreviations such as "Co.", "Inc.", "Corp." and "Ltd." in the stub, which I retained. Running head "NATIONAL LABOR RELATIONS BOARD" and page number 167 omitted. The table continues from the previous page (the case list is mid-alphabet at the top), but column headings are reprinted on this page, so they are given.
